I don't want to get into a whole Moulin Rouge v Chicago, but I enjoyed the former waaaaay more than the latter for the very reasons you mention.
Chicago
was a very traditional musical, and played out like a filmed stage play. That isn't always a bad thing, but at least (in my my anyways), Moulin had something
extra for a film-going audience (as opposed to a theatre audience). It embodied cinema traditions from around the world - most obviously Bollywood (but not the length of a Bollywood picture
- plus it still maintained that connection to old Hollywood at the same time.
Mind you, I'm biased, as I love everything Baz Luhrmann does....
Anyways, completely off-topic, just thought I'd comment on the films...
