Woohoo! This is very exciting, to have it confirmed! Looks like there's still no commentary or featurette, though.
Let's hope HI & BMW isn't as far away as I fear it might be (after TVshowsondvd.com saying mid-'05 for HI). I'd love a press release for those!

Yahoooooo! I can't wait to get this. I just wish they would go ahead and release them all this year. I know, I'm impatient, but this is my favorite television show of all time!
It sucks that the bonus feature is just a game. Probably some version of the game they have on www.lifetimetv.com
I can't believe that they aren't doing any commentaries, bloopers, behind the scenes, or retrospectives. That's the kind of stuff I would LOVE to see on the Golden Girls season releases! I can dream....

Dolby Digital MONO??? What the heck is that about? This show was broadcast in Stereo. I know there has been problems with the first season's set sound and it was supposed to be in Stereo and listed as such and then turned out not to be.
If Disney is releasing the second season in Mono sound on purpose this is very disappointing.

That reminds me of an actual quote from the show:
ROSE: Dorothy, you're the smart one, and Blanche, you're the sexy one, and Sophia, you're the old one...
(laughter from audience)
ROSE: I'm the nice one. Everybody's supposed to like me!
SOPHIA: The old one's not so crazy about you!
I know, the bonus features are rather lacking. Maybe in a later season set they'll include that wonderful Lifetime special that aired last summer. Forget what it was called, but it had BW, RM, and BA doing solo "memoirs" or so from the show, and was filled with clips and bloopers.MadonnasManOne wrote:I can't believe that they aren't doing any commentaries, bloopers, behind the scenes, or retrospectives. I found the audio to be fine. Of course, I don't have the ears to pay attention to whether something's in stereo or mono or surround or whatnot. If I can hear it, I'm satisfied, lol.Chris wrote:Dolby Digital MONO??? What the heck is that about? This show was broadcast in Stereo. I'm definitely looking forward to this release, but I agree that the bonus material's severely lacking. My only guess (and it's a slim one) is that Disney's saving up all of the bonus material for the last season or something since having extensive bonus material for every season may end up being repetitive. I don't like the cover very much at all. Yellow and teal just don't go together. I guess since this is the Golden Girls, they wanted to have something yellow on the cover.
I know, I hope BMW doesn't get pushed back to August or September or that they don't cancel the release all togther, Season 3 is my favorite of BMW and one of the best seasons of the show, they really came into their own in that seasonawallaceunc wrote:Woohoo! Re: The Golden Girls Season 2 DVD Press Release
I expect that to be on the season seven set... and it had better be! In the meantime, the lack of actual commentaries is really quite disappointing, especially for such a popular show with an aging but still vibrant and in-the-spotlight cast (save Estelle Gettys). Interviews would be nice as well. GG is one of the most-watched shows in syndication, I believe only behind Seinfeld and Friends. Look at how good their DVD releases are (especially Seinfeld's, which is the best I've ever seen for a TV show) and then compare that to Golden Girls. I can let season one slide, but one would expect this to improve with succeeding seasons.Escapay wrote:Maybe in a later season set they'll include that wonderful Lifetime special that aired last summer. Same here. From what I understand, it was never entirely established that Season One's audio was less than what was promised. A few people over at Home Theater Forum complained that it was in 1.0 mono and called Buena Vista to complain. Buena Vista responded that it was supposed to be stereo and that they would look into it (or something like that). As far as I know, nothing else has ever come of that.Escapay wrote:I found the audio to be fine. The audio sounds fine to me, keeping in mind that it's old. Then again, I only have television compare it to... and I'm not hearing this alleged superiority in the TV broadcasts. There's strong sound coming out of both the left and right speakers (nothing in center or rear channels). I don't hear any differentiation in channels, but that doesn't necessarily indicate much when you're talking about a 1980s sitcom.
One must keep in mind that for a TV Show (especially a sitcom... and even more especially an older sitcom), audio isn't quite the same as a movie of today. What really matters is that everything can be heard at an appropriate volume and that everything sounds even and clean. In the case of Golden Girls' Season One release, it did, and I have no complaints. (For what it's worth, my receiver displays Dolby Digital Stereo when I insert Golden Girls, not Mono as it does on other things).
I don't know what Golden Girls was originally broadcast in, and I'm unable to find a conclusive answer on that (there's a lot of "I'm pretty sure it was this or that"). As long as everything sounds fine, I don't see the need for hysterical nitpicking (not that anyone here has done that ). We'll see what GGS2 ends up actually bringing us. I'm guessing/hoping that the Mono listing is either a mistake or an intentional inaccuracy on Disney's part in order to curb complaints from the audibly unsatisfied that complained with season one.

Oh, and on the subject of the disc & cover art...
The disc art does look very bland and plain (and Sophia gets the shaft!). I'm hoping, though, that the unexplained gaps on the side of each disc will be where they list episode titles and for some reason they just didn't include that on the disc art they sent out.
I actually like the cover art better this time around (no oddly cropped block-pics of the cast) and think the color scheme is kind of cool.

There's a preview for Season 2 on the Ladder 49 DVD.... very exciting! I don't remember which episodes are from which season until I see them in their original order, but from the preview alone, it looks as though this one is definitely going to be even funnier than the last.

I love the golden girls. To all of you who's waiting until tuesday 17th of May:
I already got the second season on 13th of May! (I live in Sweden and pre-ordered it like 2 months earlier).
Plus I love the bonus material (YES there is one). A golden girl trivia: "Are you as wise as Sophia or as clueless as Rose?".

Thanks!
Also, the @ccess Golden Girls (of UD's own thegoldengirlsbiz) reports that Lifetime has put up a petition for its viewers to sign for them to air The Golden Palace, which ran for one season after GG. Hopefully this will get aired; it will undoubtedly do well and my hope is that it will encourage Buena Vista to release the series to DVD, although I can't imagine that they would do it until after all 7 seasons of GG are out. Anyways, here's the petition:

Aaron, I think there's a mistake in your review.
About Empty Nest, the season 2 finale was an entirely different "Empty Nest" than the one that actually became a series. The "Empty Nest" that did spin-off from Golden Girls was about the recurring character Dr. Harry Weston, and his daughters. And of course, his dog Dreyfuss. The characters often crossed over from Empty Nest to Golden Girls.
IIRC, Empty Nest ran from 1988-1995, so it was during the GG's third season (1987-1988) that they introduced the characters.
