Turbo (DreamWorks Animation)

Post by Sotiris »

Just when DreamWorks seems to be making a move towards more quality films, they announce projects like this one.

Synopsis
Turbo tells the story of an ordinary garden snail with an impossible dream: to become the fastest snail in the world. When a freak accident gives him extraordinary speed, Turbo (voiced by Ryan Reynolds) sets out to try to make this dream come true.

Back in Time to People in 2006: A panda who does kung fu? Wow, DreamWorks thinks of the stupidest ideas.

We just have a small summary and character design to go on. Hardly enough to pre-judge a project before it's even started animating.
"There are two wolves and they are always fighting. One is darkness and despair. The other is light and hope. Which wolf wins? Whichever one you feed." - Casey Newton, Tomorrowland

It looks bad and sounds even worse. That said, the style seems very cartoony. If Dreamworks goes all out and makes a Looneytunes-esque feature, it could end up being something worth while, at least from an animation standpoint. We'll have to wait and see.

Not to mention that back then Adam Sandler was attached to the Kung Fu Panda project, which made it even stupider.

I agree that we shouldn't judge until we have the final product in our hands. I thought Megamind was going to be very generic and stupid, but it turned out to be surprisingly solid and entertaining, and even a very clever tribute to the super hero genre and the existential crisis that may form out of trying to break away from social statuses.

Just from watching this poster and reading the description this sounds to be very cartoony, very crazy and most likely fun. Again, I will wait and see, but I don't expect Shakespeare out of a movie about a super fast snail.

DreamWorks Animation has assembled a massive voice cast for its latest animated production, Turbo. Paul Giamatti, Michael Pena, Luis Guzmán, Bill Hader, Richard Jenkins, Ken Jeong, Michelle Rodriguez, Maya Rudolph, Ben Schwartz, Kurtwood Smith, Snoop Dogg and Samuel L. Jackson are joining Ryan Reynolds in Turbo, the company’s original feature that has a release date of July 19, 2013.

David Soren, a DreamWorks Animation veteran as a story artist, voice actor and director is set to direct the film based on his own original concept. He is co-writing the script with Robert Siegel and Darren Lemke.
Lisa Stewart is producing with Susan Rogers serving as co- producer.

According to DWA, Turbo follows an ordinary garden snail (Reynolds) with dreams of racing greatness. His obsession with speed and all things fast has made him an oddity and outsider in the slow and cautious snail community, and a constant embarrassment to his careful older brother. When he is one day imbued with the power of amazing speed, he embarks on a quest that will see him racing in the Indianapolis 500.

I don't have a problem pre-judging this.

This looks, and sounds, like utter. shit.

Okay, that's a LOT of celebrities doing the voices since Sony Pictures Animation's Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and Blue Sky's upcoming fourth Ice Age movie.

Anyway, I got to admit, the storyline looks pretty good for a DreamWorks movie at least. I hope it doesn't end up being a shitstall.

So I'm imagining that at the pitch session, at some point someone said "Like Ratatouille, but with snails and cars!"
"Ta ta ta taaaa! Look at me... I'm a snowman! I'm gonna go stand on someone's lawn if I don't get something to do around here pretty soon!"

Eh, it doesn't look as half-assed as Cars 2.
