DCA's World of Color Water Show

What's the general opinion?
My first inclination was to think it looked way cool. My second was to wonder if we really needed another Fantasmic. My third inclination was to be very thankful that Fantasmic is not getting replaced, while my fourth and final (so far) was to become excited in anticipation and to hope I get to Disneyland while the show is running.

How ironic that you should post this, pinkrenata! We were happily surprised to see concept art for this show to be posted when we went to Disney's California Adventure last Sunday (btw, the NJ Trilogy is temporarily the CA Trilogy as Escapay said in another thread. We're visiting relatives and Disneyland! DISNEYLAND!!!). I guess I forgot/missed the original announcement of this project when Disney announced the DCA makeover.
Anyhow, thanks for posting the announcement! I didn't read the whole thing, because I don't like spoilers.
BUT...I was delighted to hear this part:
Anyhow, this news compelled me to post some pictures that I took from our trip:
Here's the lagoon at Paradise Pier, now drained to make way for the new fountains. You can see a little bit of it in this picture because my main goal was to get a shot of the new Mickey's Fun Wheel (rethemed Sun Wheel for the DCA makeover). The Orange Swinger by Mickey's Fun Wheel is also getting re-themed to be "Silly Symphony Swings" as indicated by some construction walls (not picture):
Here's an explanation of why the lagoon has been drained posted on a bridge of a prime viewing area for the future show:
Here's concept art of Crush and friends for the new show. You can really see how ugly the lagoon is drained:
We're going to Disneyland again this Sunday, so hopefully we'll get a chance to check out the Disney Imagineer's Blue Sky Cellar (see logo on bottom right corner of sign on 2nd picture). It was advertised to have lots of previews of what guests will see in the reimagined California Adventure.

It's nice to know that Disney isn't forgetting its past, especially with the whole idea of the makeover of DCA. The Wonderful World of Color is such a great musical piece and hearing it really brings back memories for us of watching old WWoC reruns on Vault Disney and I'm sure will bring back childhood memories for the older generations who watched its original airings. To have it as part of the soundtrack of a new show sounds awesome!!Brady MacDonald wrote:The water show will feature an array of dancing fountains, movie projections and lighting effects all tied to the original Sherman Brothers musical score from Disney’s Sunday night television show of the 1960s and ’70s.

I am totally bummed that the NJ trio were at Disneyland at the same time as me and my family and there was no meet.
I also saw the preview at the Blue Sky Cellar. They are fixing the seating problems and it looks really good.

What?!? No way! You were there!? I wish we knew so we could have met up! But I don't know how much time we would've had...we got to Disneyland late around 6 pm last Sunday because we were driving from northern CA all day from my Uncle's house. We didn't have too much time in the park our second day and we couldn't use our 3rd day on our hopper to come back again before going home. Alas, we are home now.Mr. Toad wrote:I am totally bummed that the NJ trio were at Disneyland at the same time as me and my family and there was no meet.

Anyhow, I put aside my dislike of spoilers to understand the concept art I saw and I'm super super excited at how the show will play out and each scene leads into the next! Below I've posted the all the concept art and development for World of Color at the Blue Sky Cellar. It really is beautiful and spectacular of what they are trying to do with this show. The blend of colored lights, water fountains, and animation is really something and I can't wait to see it for real! I'm pretty sure the crowds will start lining up to come to California Adventure once this opens (at least in the evening).
Most of the Blue Sky Cellar was devoted to World of Color development. I'm sure once that opens, they'll make way for more about Cars Land opening 2011.
"Just Around the Riverbend" segment concept sketch.
Even Pocahontas's hair plays a big role in the show as it blows in the colors of the wind. You can't have a show about Disney's World of Color without this song!
The next series of pictures are the paper models used for the "paper animation" for the Alice in Wonderland segments of the show.
Here is the mock-Imagineer's desk for more World of Color concepts and a closeup of the colorful world of Alice in Wonderland.
Colors of the Universe segment shows the colors of outer space are honored with the memorable space ballet scene of EVE and WALL-E.
Out of all things in the Lion King, I thought a segment on Mufasa's murder was a cryptic choice for the show, but I guess you can't have a Disney show without an interruption from the Disney villains.
Here is the new character Little Squirt.
A new viewing area is currently under construction to accommodate the audience. I'm pretty sure it's located in front of where the new Little Mermaid Ride will be. In the daytime, there's an interactive water fountain for kids to play in. Just what we need...wet children running around Paradise Pier.
That is all. I hope you have enjoyed the sneak peek of Disney's World of Color. Now I better start saving up to return to DCA in Spring 2010 to see it! If I do, maybe we'll get to meet up with Mr. Toad!

I never bothered to look in this thread before, but now I'm glad I did! I discovered the link that Renata posted earlier today, and my thoughts are/were (when I posted my thoughts into Notepad, like I usually do when I go around to different sites in the morning):
BUT, after seeing the concept art that Kram posted, I'm not as opposed...the whole concept sounds weird, because it isn't Walt...Walt isn't a Disney character himself, so it's strange to turn his spirit into one. But maybe that aspect won't be part of the show; maybe Little Squirt will just be his own "person" and the Walt connection won't be anymore; as it is, I can't imagine there being a spot in the show where it says that Little Squirt = Walt.
It's great that Up and The Princess and the Frog will be included!!!
Say what?!? That's odd. It just does sound odd. I can't believe (although I haven't seen the show) that Walt's spirit lives on only in an orange fountain. An orange fountain, dubbed Little Squirt, makes his first appearance as the mischievous spirit of Walt Disney.

Uh, as long as Bambi, Thumper, and/or Flower factor in there somewhere, then I guess I'm okay with that.Heimlich from “Bug’s Life” brings on the April Showers segment, which transitions into a raging sea storm
That sounds beautiful!Wall-E and Eve dance a water ballet during the Colors of the Universe segment, which features full-projection water domes.

Oh I guess I missed the part about Little Squirt being the spirit of Walt Disney. I think they were more going for that spirit of imagination that created all that is Disney rather than an actual spirit a.k.a. Walt Disney's ghosts in a blob of squirt, lol. Unless there's a narrator or the lyrics suggest it, I think it's one of those things you have to infer or just know that Little Squirt = spirit of Walt Disney. But if it is supposed to be a "character" of Walt Disney, that is indeed rather strange!
I can't wait for this show!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Awesome! Thank for sharing that, Amy. This show looks like it's going to be really awesome, especially after seeing the fire dance. I was straining to try and listen to the score because it sounded like they were playing it towards the end unless it was just the theme park music. I'm also wondering if all the equipment is going to be covered up with water or just lie out like that. It's very much an eyesore during the daytime, I wonder what they're going to do.blackcauldron85 wrote:World of Color — Behind the H2O — The Journey Begins

When we first went to DCA in 2001, they handed out tickets for the "Steps in Time" stage show at Hyperion Theater (which now has Aladdin Musical Spectacular). I don't know if it helped with crowd control at all since everyone walked right in the theater and we didn't have to wait in line or give them our ticket. I guess when there's big crowds it will at least guarantee early arriving park guests a viewing spot (patch of concrete? step? haha).Disney may distribute tickets for water show

World of Color Showing its Magic

(lol, the first video kind of reminds me of Avatar...if you've seen the film, maybe you can see it, too...?)
The second video is more exciting than the first, IMO, but they're both a little boring (except for the little bit of excitement in the second ).

I'm going to Disneyland for the first time this May. I'm bringing three of my students that qualified to the BPA (Business Professionals of America) National Conference along with my daughter. I've been to Disney World 8 times but I've never seen the place that started it all.
Anyways, reading this makes it look like DCA is closed or that a vast portion of it is closed. Is this true? I'd hate to have my first visit and have a main section of one of the parks closed for refurb. Can anyone help with this? Also, when is the Little Mermaid ride supposed to open? Will I get to ride it? Thanks for the help.

Sorry, but the sad reality is that a vast amount of California Adventure is a construction site right now. It is sad for those visiting for the first and, for some, only time but the end results do justify it.
Look at the bright side though, you will get to see World of Color, and you will just miss even more construction walls as the main entrance closes late this year for its big re-do.

Beginning June 11, “Summer Nightastic!” returns to the Disneyland Resort, featuring exciting evening events that will electrify the night. “Summer Nightastic!” runs through Aug. 29 at Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure theme parks.
Headlining the entertainment is the new nighttime water spectacular – “World of Color” – at Disney’s California Adventure park.
