Looks like the Herbie boxset has the 1st film in 16:9 widescreen, the rest in fullscreen.

Bummer.

Lame to the third power.

Lame indeed.

I should actually mention the fact that this is Australia I'm talking about, if it wasn't obvious already.

Hopefully the UK release (scheduled later this year) will smite this manifestation of EVIL!!!

I doubt it Loomis. The UK and Australian releases are often the same. Especially considering their close release windows.

There's a reason Disney in the UK and Australia are being so secretive you see... and now we know.

"And that's all I have to say about that."

Still a bummer though....

Guess I have no excuse not to buy that Love Bug DVD from the US now, huh?

HERBIE MOVIES ARE IN WIDESCREEN AFTER ALL!!!

Went and looked at the actual box set, and it lists that the 3 sequels are in fact fullscreen, but that is only indicating they are not 16:9 (all except one).

If I remember correctly, the ratios were:

THE LOVE BUG (Anamorphic Widescreen)

HERBIE GOES TO MONTE CARLO 1.66:1

HERBIE GOES BANANAS 1.33:1

HERBIE RIDES AGAIN 1.75:1

Or something like that.

Didn't buy, because I can get cheaper online. Will confirm soon (Monday more than likely)!
So looks like most of them are in their OAR or close to it.

Better than P & S anyways!!!

This is much better news at any rate!

Have ordered now at Atlantic where it is $30 under retail (and $35 under for international customers!)

Much better news, although I can't believe they're still doing non-anamorphic.

Yeah, but even so, widescreen ratio better than nothing.
Anamorphic doesn't make a big difference to me (I don't have a WS TV), but it would be nice.
Still I can't complain. I was sooooo disappointed after waiting months to see what was on the box when I heard it was "fullscreen", so I was very excited to see that the films were actually in WS.
Now if only Disney could start releasing disc specs AHEAD of release dates...

Hee hee hee....
It should arrive Monday (shipped off today), so I'll let you all know.
However, I did look at the actual box (rather than just the online info) and it seemed to all be widescreen.
Full report next week :P

I'm wondering if anyone knows if the US will get the three Herbie sequels. If so, I'm going to have to pick up the Love Bug, it's only $15 at Wal-Mart. I was so tempted to get it, but I wanted an insert. I guess I'll have to lower my pride.

Hopefully we'll get Herbie Rides Again at least in widescreen, even non-anamorphic is better than nothing!

Interesting to note that the BBC are showing Herbie Goes Bananas now - in 1.33:1 full screen.

No as any resident of the UK knows, the BBC often make great effort to show films in a 1.75:1 ratio (ragardless of the original ratio - they often show 2.35:1 films in P&S 1.75:1 for example). They have on earlier rare occasions been known to show films where the original aspect ratio is the academy 1.33:1 as matted 1.75:1, but soon stopped this practice. So the BBC is just as bad as American television for cropping films when shown on television, just for different reasons :)

I can only assume that 1.33:1 is a valid aspect ratio for this film. Not to say it was the theatrical ratio, but Disney themselves regard 1.33:1 as a possible valid ratio for the film. That said, it doesn't look like it's being presented open matte, so some of the side information must be cropped (I assume)

Update

Actually on seeing more of the film, I think it may be open matte after all - there does seem to be excessive of headroom on a number of shots (although a few still look like vital information would be missing if matted)

Interesting, 2099.

It did seem odd that 3 out of the 4 movies would be presented in widescreen and one was not. I was thinking perhaps it is in fact the OAR (or as you say, a valid ratio for this film).

Very strange indeed.
At any rate, I don't regret buying the set. It looks quite groovy on the shelf :D

If anyone is interested you can buy the Love Bug seperately on DVD over here

http://www.choicesdirect.com/templates/ ... Guid=76815

but given it's price and lack of special features (it's obviously an old disc) who would want to?

I want Herbie Rides Again on WIDESCREEN! I hope Disney is planning to release it soon.

I expect the Herbie sequels to be forthcoming in the US. They've been assigned UPCs already.
