The New Other Item Thread

This is a thread because I have gotten frustrated in the past when I get something new that I would like to share with you all. The Other Item can be games, books, toys, and new electronics, anything that does not fit on the New CD & New DVD threads.

So apparently some friends of my parents were at a rummage sale and thought of me when they saw two perfect condition books (hey I thought they were new). The books were Cartoon Classics Collection Volume 2 (very basic stories from Hanna-Barbera but still pretty cool) and Red Green Talks Cars: A Love Story (which is great because I have been looking everywhere for this OOP book).

Actually, I could use some advisement here. When I was little, I remember a series of books that I used to read all the time that had lots of various children's stories, most of them adapted from Disney films both live action and animated. For example, I think one volume was all stories from America, and had really nice adaptations of stuff like Big Red and the Brer Rabbit stories from Song of the South. Another book was stories from around the world, and featured some of the tales from the Latin American compilation films. Anyway, they were a really cool way to re-visit a vast number of Disney films without having to go out and find them on video, which is I suppose what people had to do in the days before home video.

Anyways, although I lost track of these books a long time ago, I'd really like to try to find them through used booksellers online. Trouble is, I can't remember what they're called. They were a set of at least three volumes, hard-cover, with mostly green binding except for the spines, which were different colors for each different volume. They belonged to my older siblings and thus were published well before my time, probably in the '60s or '70s. If anyone has the slightest clue what I'm talking about, I'd love to hear it.

I got DC's Showcase Presents: The Superman Family Vol 1 - lots of classic goofy stories from Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen and.. towards the back of the book Superman's Girlfriend Lois Lane (because they are being printed chronologically, and Jimmy Olsen was released first - later they alternate between JO and LL issues).

I also got:

The Art and Flair of Mary Blair - I've "been going to" buy that for a long time. How is it?

They were about 8.5 X 11 inches, hardcover, and each volume was approx. 200 pages...lots of illustrations as well.

If I recall correctly, the "Stories from Other Lands" volume had a bagpiper in a box on the cover, and the American stories volume had possibly a cowboy in the same place (or maybe a Disney character dressed up as one).

Anyways, I got a new Ruger .270 bolt action long gun. I got a x9 X 40 mm scope mounted on it. It's pretty nice, it should be for $500 and waiting 30 minutes for my back ground check to clear. It kicks pretty hard too because you not using a small shell. Pretty much it kicks like a .30-06. So I took it to the shooting range shoot about 20 rounds, my shoulder was numb for like a good hour. It's quite accurate to but I still need to site in my scope at 100 meters I also need to practice to steady myself a little better too.

That's about the only new thing that I got lately. I have been installing new parts in my car. For instance, I just got done installing my racing seats that I bought in January. I kind of slowed down on getting things for my car because it needs fixing plus I still need a new fuel gauge, mine is broken.

I did a quick google search for "Stories From Other Lands" (which I was sure was what one of the volumes was called) and I got a book series published by Golden Books in 1965. The one I really liked was the "Walt Disney's America" volume, because it has the Brer Rabbit stories (and it even has Brer Rabbit on the cover!). Another volume in the set was the "Fantasyland" edition which had all the fairy tales condensed into bedtime story length. Pictures of all three of these books can be found at:

Hmmm...perhaps the foreign language editions had slightly different covers?

And I think there may have been a second edition published in the late '70s, so perhaps the covers were different from the 1965 printing.

Yesterday I bought a new pair of sandals from Walmart. Can't wait to wear them! Of course it had to SNOW just after buying them. Grr.

Also, I'm wondering if anyone could help me find this two book set of fairy tales. My mom had them and I used to love reading from them. I'm not sure what happened to them but we don't have them anymore. Both were hard back and one was pink and the other blue. They had all the different fairy tale type stories in them. Such as Brother and Sister, Rumplestilskin, etc. The illustrations were beautiful as well. I think 'Treasure' was in the title as well. But I can't remember the exact titles for the books. They were published in the 1970s or earlier I'd imagine. My mom had them for a long time.

I had tried looking at Amazon.com for them in hopes of getting them for my mom but I haven't had any luck. I know this isn't what this thread is for exactly I thought I'd ask since some of you were able to help Karushifa find the books he was looking for.

That could be it. I seem to remember the other cover style on the English-language edition I'm pretty sure I've seen. That, OTOH, could have been British, which also might have been the reason. This whole thing still calls for further research.
