Movie Club remastering!

So, with the new releases of "Almost Angels" and "Sword and the Rose"...it looks like Disney has listened and cleaned up the picture and presented both in a somewhat okay presentation. What other exclusives have seen this kinda of treatment? My copy of "Rob Roy" seems to be a rip from the 80's VHS tape..same with "The Fighting Prince of Donegal". If anyone else knows what other exclusives have seen any sort of remastering...please tell.

I don´t think The Sword and the Rose is remastered. At least it doesn´t look like that to me!

Really? because, the packaging says that it's Digitally Mastered. The picture on ALMOST ANGELS is far superior than any of the others releases I have seen thus far. The releases of Rob Roy and The Fighting Prince are just horrible! the picture quality, esp. during the nighttime scenes is almost unwatchable.

"The Monkey's Uncle" is a great remastered transfer with brilliant color and crisp detail.

"So Dear to My Heart" also looks good from these screenshots posted awhile back:

Scanadlous John and Smith both look pretty good (and Scandalous John is presented in its original Cinemascope ratio too! Here's hoping that Westward Ho, the Wagons will get the same treatment!!!!!).

"The Story of Robin Hood" did not look good - - a shame since I have heard the film has been restored from Technicolor for some years now, but never remastered for video!

Curious???

So, I am guessing that Rob Roy, Tonka,Fighting Prince, The Sword and the Rose, Moon Pilot, Tiger Walks, have not been mastered? this is perplexing to me, because, the packaging on the back of Tonka, The Sword and the Rose and Fighting Prince all say that they are "digitally mastered"....so....what does that mean? if they still look like crap??

It´s not "crap" but it´s like watching an old VHS sometimes ;)
I think the transfer is from such a source on some of these.
But of course, I want to be corrected if I am wrong on this!

"Moon Pilot" also looks really good from this clip:

Could be that it all depend$ on whether home video has a remastered version already on hand or not. Some years back they were systematically doing new digital telecine masters from refreshed film elements, but ultimately they did not follow through on the whole library.

Some others are likely just digital conversions from analog tape masters of the VHS era where they don't want to pay new telecine costs. Just a guess.

Seems like a title-by-title question.

My thoughts on what I've seen

So far I have seen the following

Moon Pilot- I am sorry to say that at times, the print looks ok..but, on other shots..it suffers from grain and horrible framing.

Monkey's Uncle-not a fan of the movie itself, but, the print looks okay.

Roby Roy- I seriously doubt this has went through anything except being transferred from a dusty vhs tape...the nighttime scenes are unwatchable at times.

Fighting Prince of Donegal- this looks good during daytime scenes but suffers during the nighttime scenes..also the framing is terrible!

Robin Hood- nothing need to be said here!

Almost Angels-Looks amazing!!! the picture is so crisp and the lines are very much defined! this is a serious improvement over the vhs release. Says that it is digitally mastered

So Dear to My Heart-I think this has been pointed out before, that the dvd version outshines both previous Laserdisc and vhs versions. It is much sharper than the previous releases.

The Wild Country- althought, not a favorite movie of mine...I think it just suffers from the cropped framing it has...the scenery would enhance the film I believe if it was released in its OAR.

Smith!-I have not seen

Scandalous John- I think that this film as a whole...I dont know...it's odd to me, I think the idea ( a western take on Don Quixote) was a good one..but, the whole things falls flat and I got bored after the first 15 mins. The dvd release however, shows a good picture..and the HUGE framing really adds to the film.

Superdad-Never saw this on vhs before, and thought it was a cute little movie..kinda lame at times, but, the quality was ok...still didn't like that it is 1:33

Tiger Walks-I have not seen

The Sword and the Rose- I finally dug out my vhs copy and compared to the dvd release...I dont know...I mean, at times it shows pretty well, but, then again on long area shots and nighttime scenes..it just looks blurry to me. The packaging says it's digitally mastered....but I doubt that.

I just got copies of The Sword and the Rose, Almost Angels and Moon Pilot from DMC. I disagree about your assessment of the quality. While The Sword and the Rose appears to be a different master than the laserdisc, it's definitely not a great-looking picture. Almost Angels looks even worse, like an old transfer. Moon Pilot, on the other hand, looks quite good, and appears to be open-matte, so that when I zoom the picture to widescreen the framing looks correct.

I should probably mention that I am viewing these projected at 6 1/2 feet wide.

I'll post some screen captures tomorrow.

Here are some screen captures:
Sword and the Rose

TRdvd3.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1109.photobucket.com/albums/h42 ... TRdvd3.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
And for comparison, these are captures from the 1992 Laserdisc:
<a href="http://s1109.photobucket.com/albums/h42 ... laser1.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1109.photobucket.com/albums/h42 ... laser1.jpg" border="0" alt="Sword and the Rose laserdisc capture 1"></a><a href="http://s1109.photobucket.com/albums/h42 ... laser3.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1109.photobucket.com/albums/h42 ... laser3.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
From Almost Angels:
<a href="http://s1109.photobucket.com/albums/h42 ... dvd1-1.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1109.photobucket.com/albums/h42 ... dvd1-1.jpg" border="0" alt="Almost Angels capture 1"></a>
<a href="http://s1109.photobucket.com/albums/h42 ... AAdvd3.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1109.photobucket.com/albums/h42 ... AAdvd3.jpg" border="0" alt="Almost Angels capture 2"></a>
<a href="http://s1109.photobucket.com/albums/h42 ... AAdvd2.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1109.photobucket.com/albums/h42 ... AAdvd2.jpg" border="0" alt="Almost Angels capture 3"></a>
And from Moon Pilot:
<a href="http://s1109.photobucket.com/albums/h42 ... MPdvd1.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1109.photobucket.com/albums/h42 ... MPdvd1.jpg" border="0" alt="Moon Pilot capture 1"></a>
<a href="http://s1109.photobucket.com/albums/h42 ... MPdvd2.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1109.photobucket.com/albums/h42 ... MPdvd2.jpg" border="0" alt="Moon Pilot capture 2"></a>
<a href="http://s1109.photobucket.com/albums/h42 ... MPdvd3.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1109.photobucket.com/albums/h42 ... MPdvd3.jpg" border="0" alt="Moon Pilot capture 3"></a>
Unfortunately one thing I discovered is that The Sword and the Rose and Almost Angels have been time-compressed as their running times are each about 4 minutes shorter than what is stated on the box as well as the official running times from internet movie database.

Re: Sword and the Rose

The DVD was obviously taken from the same master print used for the vhs release(s). Here is a cip on youtube that was from a dvd-r transfer of the VHS release.

<iframe title="YouTube video player" width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/qWPGucVZDsA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

see almost the exact same.

As with Almost Angels had posted a comparison shot of a dvd-r transfer I had transferred myself 5 years ago from the 80s vhs release compared to the Disney Movie Club dvd release and it is definitely better quality. Restoration was put into it, granted not as good as some of the others but it is a more obscure film perhaps Disney hasn't put as much care into its preservation.

Disney Exclusives Remastering

While the So Dear to My Heart DVD was in good shape, I remember being disappointed with a couple of scenes, and that I was going to have to hold on to my VHS tapes.

If I'm recalling correctly, the medium shot of Granny looking over the pen at newborn Danny, and where Granny (with barn interior in background) tells Jeremiah her bargain with God to keep the lamb: the color and/or sharpness was of a lesser quality.

so what dvds does everyone feel should be avoided from purchasing? I am reading that a lot of you are pleased with MOON PILOT, MONKEY'S UNCLE, SO DEAR TO ME HEART....but, what about the other exclusives?
