Anthology wave

Post by DexterRiley »

I guess beggars can't be choosers...and while I'm happy to get Johnny Shiloh...and happy that they're releasing more from the anthology series...couldn't they finish up the handful of feature titles still left?! Also, it would be nice to see the Anchor Bay releases that didn't get a Disney DVD release get an exclusive release. No matter how rare, The Bears and I will never be worth $50.

Incidently, I ordered 4 DVDs 2 days ago with their 33% off special. I called today when I got the new mailing with 50% off and they told me that they had already shipped. BUT...they gave me a credit for the difference! Good to know if you find yourself in the same position...the squeaky wheel!!

Does anyone have Westward Ho the Wagons? I see on the back it is "full screen", but IMDb lists it as 2.35:1. Is it pan-scanned or open matte?

Just found the answer to my question in another thread:

http://www.dvdizzy.com/forum/viewtopic. ... highlight=

I was afraid this was going to be the case.

I submitted some feedback to Disney about the aspect ratio problem here:

I just got "Almost Angels" and am finding that it's been sped up. The voices are higher than both the original VHS and the DVD recording I have from Vault Disney. Has anyone else noticed this with other releases?

I haven't seen it but I'll bet the master is a PAL to NTSC conversion - that time compresses things a fraction.

I'm guessing you're right, merlin.

There is also a very bad audio problem with Almost Angels. At the 25 minute mark, the audio is very screwed up. I contacted Disney and they are aware of it but it sounds like they aren't going to address it. "If we have a reissue of it, we'll certainly contact you." Can ANYONE imagine "Almost Angels" going into a second pressing?!

Also, for anyone keeping notes, "Westward, Ho, the Wagons" is HORRIBLY panned and scanned. Very often you find yourself looking at Fess Parker's ear and Jeff York's nose with nothing but wilderness in between. I'm sure this was taken directly from the old VHS release because no self respecting studio would issue such a bad transfer in this day of widescreen tvs.

In more encouraging news, "The Littlest Outlaw" looks pretty good. Color and transfer is bright and clear.

this is why i have asked several times for people to rate or do a full review of the DMC exclusive releases...some are worth getting..while others are not...wish someone would help make a thread with what they feel are worth the money and what is not.

I thought something was wrong with the audio in Almost Angels at one point, but I couldn't put my finger on it exactly. I'm glad I wasn't imagining things.

The state of Westward Ho the Wagons on dvd is discouraging. On one hand Disney strongly pushes Blu-ray/widescreen technology through tactics that make them more appealing than dvds in many ways, then they totally mess up a classic movie like Westward Ho and give no regard whatsoever to its proper aspect ratio. It's truly unacceptable to release a Cinemascope picture in a pan and scan transfer in this day and age. I contacted Disney to express my disappointment, and I hope enough voices will sway them.

DexterRiley:

I noticed the same audio problem in Almost Angels. At time interval 25:01 through 25:40, the soundtrack and dialogue becomes garbled. It seeems to be a problem with the source material rather than a DVD playback issue.

Almost Demons

Post by DexterRiley »

I would encourage anyone who has Almost Angels to contact Disney and complain. While they are "aware" of it, more complaints makes a bigger impact. And while I don't think it will result in a reissue of this title, it might make them think twice about releasing inferior products in the future.

Did the mailer have any info on The Fox and the Hound Blu ray the DMC site refers to

All it says is an Exclusive Preview doesn't necessarily mean a Blu-Ray release or anything. Will see on June 7th what it is.

I just got my mailer and checked the website and the new Featured Title is the Fox and the Hound Blu ray and it says Out of the vault for you (DMC Members) on 6/7 (in stores 8/2) so I'm gonna order it on pay day....and maybe call DMC to find out or confirm the the movie is available and will ship and its not just a 2 month pre-order

Someone must have been listening. Disney Movie Club has listed 2 new exclusives, "Charley and the Angel" and "Emil and the Detectives"...both feature films which have only been released on VHS prior to these releases. We may yet see the full feature library released!

What is the running time of JOHNNY SHILOH ? is it a feature film version or episodes? is it widescreen?

is THE LITTLEST OUTLAW widescreen?

The website always says DVDs are fullscreen even when they aren't, so I ask.

thanks in advance.

hit or miss

Post by justcuttinhair »

Johnny Shiloh is the two episodes put together. I am not sure if this is the European theatrical release or just the two episodes put together with titles. This release looks to be culled from the same master that was used for the 1980's VHS release.

Littlest Outlaw is not in widescreen....in fact...NONE! of the Disney exclusives have released the films in their OAR. However, some people have stated that it is open matte, so therefore can be switched to widescreen if your player has that capability.

As far as quality...it's truly hit or miss with these releases...some of them are lightyears better than their laser disc or vhs releases( Horse without a Head, Emil and the Detectives, Moon Pilot, Monkey's Uncle)...but, some are still in need of mastering( Westerward Ho the Wagons, Sword and the Rose, Fighting Prince)
