Okay I want to see this because it's a fairy tale, and one I particularly like, and it doesn't look terribly awful...but some parts still look awful.

Julia Roberts got bashed for being the wicked queen, but I like seeing a rather charming woman who, I think in some parts I've seen, can pull of some wickedness and scariness. Maybe not as much as she should but she's not horrible. Snow White herself seems great. I really like the Prince, he seems so sweet and cute. Nathan Lane looks horrible in that wig and I hope he isn't made into a cringeworthy buffoon, like almost all the dwarfs seem to be. Don't those little people have some self respect, don't they worry about being made fun of for not only their size but now their characters? Pretty much any of the humor the characters exhibit is cringeworthy and lowbrow-feeling though. The movie trailers all start making it feel like it will be a big classic and then devolves into jokey slapsticky crap.

I think some of the costumes, sets, and special effects look great, and I understand its a fantasy kingdom, but I wish there was a little more historical cohesiveness and realism and that some of the sets didn't look ugly and too whimsical to be taken seriously. It seems to take place in either the 17th or 18th century with a good amount of 16th century thrown in. And Snow White has the most gosh-awful swan outfit I've ever seen, she doesn't look beautiful there at all. She looks worse than when Bjork did it. At least the Prince looks cute in his rabbit ears. He's pretty adorable.

Well that's a super cool article! So the song was not just not written by Alan Menken - it was written like 40 years ago! It really like the song but I actually only really love the song in the trailer, with just three "I believe"'s before "in love!" I like the way that sounds and feels much more. Oh well.

Gotta say, there are things I love and hate about this one so far. First, I don't normally want to see anything with Julia Roberts (I'll watch Hook for many reasons, but she never should have been cast as Tink, even though she tries hard enough), but she does seem very funny in this movie. However, this seems a mix of really funny and not funny at all (like the puppy love joke and lame dwarf jokes/puns, for example). But, I LOVE fairytales and would never skip a chance to see a new, live-action one. Also, Lily Collins is a goddess of Emma Watson proportions. BUT, they messed up her look in this movie. For one thing, why did they double the size of her eyebrows? Seriously, that is not a "beauty" thing. They were already pronounced, but in an attractive way. And maybe her usual hair/skin tone is more flattering to her look, I don't know, but really, I think the eyebrow thing is the main thing. What were they thinking?! Argh!!! Admittedly, that is a more superficial complaint, but hey, she's supposed to be the fairest of them all here, and Lily definitely could be that.

So, I saw a new trailer for this on TV yesterday and it made me think that this movie was only made due to the success of Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland. I mean, that happens in Hollywood all the time, sure, but I mean, Julia Robert's Queen reminded me of the Queen of Hearts in Alice... as far as being, not crazy, but I don't know how else to describe it.

I can't believe I wrote as long a review as I just did, for a movie that's not that great! Well, in this review I ask questions maybe people can answer.

I finally saw this movie. It was fun. And had really awesome sets and costumes, and some really cool special effects. And a really beautiful Snow White. And a really cute prince. And a really nice song at the end, that I love.

I'd say that's really it.

The Queen is not crazy like the Red Queen in Alice in Wonderland, but if only Julia Roberts had been half as good as Helena Bonham Carter in that role. No one in this film was bad but certainly no one was really something to write home about, either. I would say at least that Julia Roberts, the Prince and his servant were the best actors in this film though.

Snow White was one of the most beautiful incarnations I'd ever seen - but pretty much only on the outside. Lily Collins had a few good moments as her, but I didn't find her particularly good or memorable. She wasn't anything like especially endearing, sweet or kind, nor was she especially strong as becoming a conifdent warrior princess who takes back her kingdom.

The Prince was just so adorable and pretty funny, and I actually feel he gave the best line in the film about the stories of princes saving girls, though Nathan Lane's line after he was changed back from a beatle is also the other funniest line.

The dwarfs were...ugh, I felt bad for them, little people that once again are used only for comic relief. They were so silly. Can't the dwarfs be taken seriously with decent back stories and scenes? And impact? But I guess you could say none of the main characters were treated all that seriously.

The story was an interesting one, but they really messed the original tale to the point where it's not really "the Snow White legend" they said they were "bringing to life". I mean, the way Snow White handles the end with the apple was a cool surprise, but...it loses the point of her story. And it was only when they mentioned the beast in the forest that I remember the producer of the film said "there was a dragon in the original folk tale" and I was like...well not in the Grimm's version that you'd call the real Snow White you're basing this on, but...maybe there was a version older than Grimm's that had a dragon. Anyway, the dragon in this film was ultra-cool and pretty scary, though I'm sure if it weren't a family film, it would have been scarier, like I thought Alice in Wonderland's Jabberwocky was. Oh, another attempt to be like that money-making Alice in Wonderland?

The animated opening was really cool, though. And so was that glass egg/magic lantern the Queen used kind of like another mirror, but to watch events unfold. But I don't quite get why this film was called Mirror Mirror when the mirror did not feature as much as I thought it would. It didn't really put the story in motion like it always does. The idea for the mirror was cool, but aside from the mirror being water and Julia Roberts chillingly playing the Queen and her talking reflection, I didn't get what the two huts she went in were about. Why walk into a hut to see your reflection when the mirror itself could have had your reflection? I really wish I knew why the huts were there, actually. Maybe they were her true home, the most pathetic thing compared to a castle? Not to mention very witch-like. But the talking reflection was a lot like the one in Snow White: A Tale of Terror's, and I think some things about that one were better, though some things in Mirror Mirror's were better. Hm... I would have said I didn't get why the mirror wasn't as grand a set piece as everything else in the film, but now I think I get it, it was an old thing a poor witch would have had, like the huts. So she married the king to become rich and powerful.

Speaking of, one thing I must commend this film for is they made a truly wicked Queen in a very realistic way, with what she was doing to the people. It was actually really horrible and could have happened in real life. Too bad it wasn't taken all that seriously, nor was the rest of the film.

Why did the King at the end say "By the power invested in me by...me" to be a joke? As far as I know, kings don't appoint priests or bishops to wed people. That power is invested by God, saying it's invested by the king is innacurate as well as blasphemous. Yea, I know, the film doesn't have to be religious. I don't need it to be, that's not the problem. The problem is it's offensive to mess with someone else's existing religion.

Anyway, I loved the song at the end, though as I said I liked how it sounded it was going to go in the trailer. The article said the song was moved from being the actual ending to just being in the credits, because apparently "the dads" in the audience couldn't stand it, but I think it should have stayed in the ending because not only was it very good and made for a great fun, truly happy and uplifting ending, but it also was the kingdom returning to singing and dancing that the kingdom used to do and Snow White was supposed to return them to! Stupid straight guys in audiences changing things that fit better in films...like Rapunzel's title...

Speaking of straight guys, I had heard this film was aimed at "mothers and daughters" which I didn't want to hear, but after seeing it I think it was aimed at all audience members. But if they were thinking of females specifically, I don't get why Snow White kept getting spanked by the prince's sword. That had to be one of the most degradingly straight-male point of view things to have put in a movie where the heroine is supposed to be respected. If she had spanked him afterward to get him back, it would have been great. But as it was, it seemed like some straight male sexual thing inserted. I know the screenplay was written by a woman but a man is also credited with partly writing it, I feel like some guys added something.

Well, that's all I have to say about this. I don't think it was all cool enough for me to want to buy when it comes to video. Which is sad.

Wow, I just learned Mirror Mirror may have made more sense and been deeper than I thought it was. Apparently the Indian director slipped in quite a few references and drew many parallels to a real life beautiful princess and rival "monarch" who was jealous of her and ruled the kingdom so cruelly its people wanted her dead. If you saw the movie and look up pictures Julia Roberts' queen does look a little like her wrapped up in the shawl, and some people say there's other times.

Mirror Mirror paralleled to the Assasination attempt of Indira Gandhi

Mirror Mirror's Snow White compared to Gayatry Devi
As the plot proceeds, you will find all sorts of markers of Sikh theology, including numerous references to daggers, hair, mirrors, water, immersions, submersions, bodily penetrations, transformations, the temple at Amritsar, dwarves who enlarge themselves, and the notion of woman as princess, among many others
Oh, so that's why the Queen entering the mirror wa submerging/emerging from the water, and I'm guessing the huts were Sikh related too. I thought it was either some ancient witchraft/religion I didn't know about or made up a magical "religion" for her.
Little more what I am aware is, Indira Gandhi was jealous about gayatri Devi’s good looks and her other plus points. When she declared the Emergency, Gayatri Devi was among her first victims
From this link.
Isolated by the family, she found she had no one to turn to when the forfeiture of nine pounds sterling from her dressing table found her incarcerated in the infamous Tihar Jail under the draconian Foreign Exchange Regulation Act. But at least in jail she was not alone -- keeping her company was the Rajmata of Gwalior; together, they were surrounded by petty criminals and prostitutes, but did not appeal to Indira Gandhi for clemency.
From this link.

Wikipedia says that "When the privy purses were abolished in 1971, terminating all royal privileges and titles, Gayatri Devi was accused of violating tax laws, and served 5 months in Tihar Jail" so I don't know if that's the nine pounds from her dresser violating tax laws or what.

And just so you know, this princess may have sounded like Snow White in public, but she could be a mean bitch to her servants and her son and other people.

Even though the majority of you didn't "get it" about this really good movie Mirror Mirror, it is coming to Blu-ray and DVD on Tuesday, June 26, and it will be in my collection.

Trying to compare this with anything else, including the Disney classic or even the "Snow White & The Huntsman" is ridiculous. Why can't a movie just stand on its own, and tell it own version of the story? And I thought Julia Roberts was very good in this one, and I have loved most of the movies she has ever been in.

Everyone on this thread seems to be very harsh about their criticisms of this very funny, charming 'family friendly' movie. I don't understand why all the naysayers. I saw this film in the theater three different times, and couldn't wait for it to come to Blu-ray. Now, it's here, and I am buying!

Why can't we have our own opinions without having them called into question and being told we don't 'get it'? It's a pretty film with a nice cast who try the best they can but it also has one of the worst scripts I've ever had the displeasure of siting through. Jokes many jokes fell flat or in some cases seemed inappropriate, it simultaneously felt rushed and painfully long. I was excited for the film and I think it was the biggest disappointment at the movies since 2008 when I tried to see Step Brothers and ended up walking out. I could go on but... ugh.

Well the film felt empty and lacking substance. It had characters who to me were missing something. I'm not saying every film needs to have everything but if you present characters for a long period of time, they need to have my interest and care and they just didn't except the prince was kinda funny and cute and I liked Julia Roberts to a degree.

And there were just so many groan worthy moments.

And I felt like I would just point out Disney's version is the best one to once just bump up how great Disney's masterpiece is, not try and bring the film down. It's fun to notice that Disney's is the best and it's a great feeling that that's how great Disney magic is.
