Judging by the trailer Mirror, Mirror is not exactly what I thought the movie would be like, but it's on a good way to win me over. It's a fresh perspective on the source material, even if it does seem a bit silly.
Snow White and the Huntsman on the other hand... Yikes! I thought we were done with these gritty re-imaginings.
In the end, I predict the Huntsman is going to win box-office-wise (even if it's only for Kristen's Twilight fanbase), but I don't think either of the two will be a critics-darling.

Are these the only two Snow White movies coming out? *sigh* I guess I will stick with "Snow White: A Tale of Terror" and the Disney animated classic. The Cannon Movie Tale is alright too.
Of course, I'll still see these two. I am a fairy tale nut, and I ADORE Lily Collins, even if they insanely enhanced her eyebrows in Mirror Mirror to a negative point. Kristen Stewart, though a terrible actress, can be super attractive for me too when she looks female. I could never picture her in the role of Snow White though. Still, I haven't seen the trailer yet, but if it's a dark take, maybe it will be good.
There's also a Kristen Kreuk version out there. More odd casting, and not a very good one if I remember correctly (I have the DVD, but I haven't watched it in forever), but I do freakin' worship Kristin Kreuk.
Well, at least we have Once Upon a Time. And what is this Grimm show I've been hearing about?

Thanks, I actually thought that trailer looked really cool! Much better than I expected from all the comments I'd read.Sotiris wrote:Here:slave2moonlight wrote:And what is this Grimm show I've been hearing about?

You're welcome!slave2moonlight wrote:Thanks.
I've watched the first two episodes and it's descent. It just feels a bit formulaic having a case with a different creature each week. It feels like all those cop shows or CSIs but instead of common criminals, they have fairytale creatures. They need to build a mythology around it and have more complex, interwoven storylines.slave2moonlight wrote:I actually thought that trailer looked really cool! I actually hate all those CSI type shows, though the trailer made it look more like Supernatural or something like that to me. But, yeah, not too good if they're not weaving more into it than just the monster of the week. Well, I mean, those shows have their entertainment value. I'm certainly a fanatic of the original Kolchak, ha, but these days one does expect more, especially if you're trying to reason the fairy tale angle and you're up against something like Once Upon a Time.

You know, when I first saw the trailer for Snow White & The Huntsman I thought it was going to be a movie about Elizabeth Bathary...except a fictional fantasy version of her legend.
The trailer for Mirror Mirror was good until Julia Roberts said she was getting "a crinkle". How can I take her or the movie seriously with the terrible attempts at comedy, mainly with the kid-pandering modern culture-referencing dwarfs and yet another princess self-referencing that she wants to save the prince after so many stories of princesses getting saved...if it weren't for that crap it might be pretty good. But I like how the Queen enters the magic mirror...looks cool.

Well, she has the skin as white as snow.tsom wrote:...in what world is Kristen Stewart, the...palest...actress in hollywood...the fairest of them all?
If it was, it would probably be better. That was a pretty good, cool, and interesting book.TheSequelOfDisney wrote:^ Is that based on Gregory Maguire's novel?
Unfortunately I think the real life historical figures were not good for it. I mean...Leonardo Da Vinci being in it almost makes it seem more impossible. Like he really meant that painting to be of her? And he didn't sound like he was really Italian and there were anachronisms like "Hello".tsom wrote:In my opinion, the best live action retelling of a fairy tale is "Ever After". To me, that movie was incredibly clever by using real history and real historical figures to fictionally explain how the Cinderella story came to be. No other retelling of any tale has compared to it thus far, in my opinion of course.

Not to mention Drew Barrymore in a period piece is also unfortunate. I just could not buy her in that one, and I didn't find her very attractive in it either. However, I still love that movie. I recently acquired a (non-official) copy of Slipper and the Rose, which I've always wanted to see, so I'll have to check that out soon. I remember snippets of it from the Disney Channel, and I always the Cindy was a cutie in that. Never seen The Glass Slipper. Cinderfella was great though! I also have a soft spot for Cheryl "Rainbeaux" Smith's awful, softcore version, ha ha. Too bad Cannon Movie Tales didn't do a Cinderella movie.Disney Duster wrote: Unfortunately I think the real life historical figures were not good for it. My favorite live-action fairytales are Company of Wolves, the Cannon Movie Tales, Ever After, and Snow White, A Tale of Terror. Monica Keena was so gorgeous back then, before she got all fake and trampy looking.
I might be forgetting some other good ones. I finally saw Into the Woods, incidentally, but I just found it depressing, ha. And, I have a few others I still need to watch, like the Abbott and Costello and Gene Kelly Jack and the Beanstalks.
I don't really consider Peter, Pinoke, or Alice as fairytales, but for the record, I LOVE the live-action Peter Pan from..., what, ten years ago now? Maybe not. And I enjoy the live-action Pinocchio greatly until he turns into Jonathan Taylor Thomas in the end and ruins the whole movie. Apparently, they made a TV series of that? As for Tim Burton's Alice, I liked it a lot, taking it for what it was, but I would have preferred to see the original story done first (like in that great flashback scene).

Disney Duster:
1. What's wrong with the girl saving the guy?
2. Yeah she's white as snow, but that's about it. The only Snow White that could actually be the fairest of them all was Monica K in Snow White: A Tale of Terror.
3. I personally think having real life historical figures was a smart move. They used The Brothers Grimm, Leonardo da Vinci, Francis I, Henry II; referenced Thomas More, Utopia, Jacques Cartier, Perrault, Henry VIII, and the French Revolution. They used all these people and references to tell Cinderella in a realistic way. It's not supposed to be fact. It's just historical fiction. Da Vinci being there was a nice touch. His paintings and inventions were like magic to people back in the 15th and 16th centuries. And aren't there rumors that he was gay? There goes the fairy angle. Plus, Da Vinci was a guest of Francis I in real-life and spent his last three years of life in France. And of course that painting was meant to be Danielle in the movie. It was a wedding present. Of course in real life it was just a random painting he did and the filmmakers used it as a reference.
4. There are anachronisms in Disney's Cinderella as well.

1. In my opinion, it was Drew's best work. As for her looks, she wasn't supposed to be drop dead gorgeous. She looked plain on purpose. Drew didn't wear much make-up and had a brunette wig because they wanted to show that Prince Henry fell in love with Danielle not because of her looks, but because of her intellect and integrity. In fact, Marguerite is supposed to be much more beautiful than Danielle. It's all in a documentary I saw on tv about Drew Barrymore.
2. Slipper and the Rose is a good retelling. It's more from the prince's point of view. The tone of it all reminds me of My Fair Lady.
3. The Glass Slipper is ok.

The most saddening thing is that the jokes in a modern comedy trailer are usually the best jokes, which means the dreadful piece of shit known as Mirror Mirror has few better "funny" lines than "Agree to disagree."
It's times like this that make me consider whether capital punishment is a good concept after all.
