'Spooky' Films ....
'Spooky' Films ....
I did do a search for this, but kept coming up with 'horror' threads; I wanted to reserve this for ghost/haunting/spooky films....films that make you question going to the bathroom in the middle of the night Rather than gross out horror films a la 'Evil Dead' remake this year.
I just saw 'The Conjuring' - Now, the entire film was jumpsville for me, but the closer it got to the ending, the more I was like 'meh'. The whole possession thing took away from the frightening start for me.
'Mama' - This had a few good jumps, but the whole story was just sad rather than anything.
'Dark Skies' - This one made me feel a bit panicy if I'm honest - didn't like the thought of it at all !
Next on my list is 'Insidious 2' - the first was damn good, extremely atmospheric. Looking forward to the second, especially as Rose Byrne is involved again, I really liked her as the mum.
What about you guys ?

Re: 'Spooky' Films ....
Bit of a hard question to answer. I've been watching horror films for so long, it gets harder to really unsettle me but here's a few basics.
Off-hand, I would say the Exorcist simply because finding something that seems 'innocent' in a kids eyes could wind up causing so much chaos. However, this depends on whether or not you get nervous about ouijia boards or not, but the basic idea could be applied to anything, like with dolls/toys such as in Demonic Toys, Puppet Master, or Child's Play.
On that note, Child's Play used to play well off of my hate for dolls, and again, which look innocent (to some people).
One last thing I can think of right now, is actually an episode of Doctor Who (David Tennant years) where the Weeping Angel statues are actually alive and creepy as hell. I'm sure other Who fans can chime in on this one.

The Orphanage is insanely spooky.
Totally haunted my head for days after.
One of my all time favorite 'spooky' films is The Skeleton Key. I find it very underrated. The ending will never stop haunting me. God that movie freaked me out.

Of the films mentioned above, I saw 'The Exorcist' (it freaked me out so much I promised myself I'd never see it again, but it was exceptional and I believe watching it was the biggest mistake of my life), 'The Skeleton Key' (I thought it was so underrated), 'El Orfanato' (brilliant) and 'Dark Skies' (the same as the 'Skeleton Key'). I really don't watch many films of this genre, but I also loved 'Psycho', 'Interview with the Vampire', 'The Sixth Sense', 'The Others', 'The Ring', 'Funny Games', 'Eden Lake', 'Triangle', 'Let Me In', 'The Woman in Black' and 'Byzantium'.

Re: 'Spooky' Films ....
To add to the list once more I would suggest these three as well (though your mileage may vary):
- The Grudge
- Poltergeist (Only PG rated, thus eliminating gore you'd find in other films)
- The Fog (Original)
One film I waver on suggesting is 'Paranormal Activity' simply because I was pretty bored while watching it, even when things 'picked up' further in. Give it a look if you're curious, and don't mind the alternating cycle of 'daylight is safety, nighttime is "scary" '

I can certainly agree on the Exorcist - I can never get beyond when she starts to talk backwards.....never again.
I haven't had a look at the Skeleton Key - is that Kate Hudson ? Will have to give it a look.
Another is The Others - that is a master of the unsettling / spooky genre.

I'll be watching four more this year: 'Carrie' (both the original and the remake), 'The Broken', 'Frozen' and 'The Crazies' (the remake). I'll let you know what I thought about them.
Re: 'Spooky' Films ....
The Carrie remake looks good; I don't ever really think of it in the horror/spooky genre though....just seems so sad.
(I do think the trailers are a massive let down for the remake - they give the entire plot away, especially for people who haven't seen the original).

Re: 'Spooky' Films ....
Let's Scare Jessica to Death is a spooky and pretty bizarre film from the early 70's. Also The Innocents from the 60's based off of the story Turn of the Screw. The original Black Christmas is pretty frightening at times although it's not a paranormal film it is gore free and really suspenseful. I think it's much scarier than Halloween which was released 4 years later. I also find The Blair Witch Project to be really freaky. I have a pretty overactive imagination so that could be why!
Re: 'Spooky' Films ....
I'm not too fond of slashers myself. Scream series and the original Halloween are the only slashers I really love/like.
As for the 'spooky' films: have you ever seen The Shining? That's not only one the greatest horror films, but one of the greatest films ever, period. It's deeply atmospheric, chilling and unsettling, with very little to no gore.
I also highly recommend John Carpenter's The Fog (avoid the remake at all costs) and Prince of Darkness. And if you're interested in vampire lore -- The Hunger. It's very atmospheric, too, almost European in its expressiveness. Suspiria is another one, eerie with some truly ominous undertones.

Re: 'Spooky' Films ....
The Exorcist certainly scared the you know what's out of me when I first saw it but the movie has started to grow on me for it's build up, the practical effects (Like how the new 2013 Evil Dead has done it's effects), the acting and writing. Not to mention the make up art by the great Dick Smith.
The most spookiest out of all of them has to be The Shining because not only did Stanley Kubrick did a better job to the source material than the book, but he turned it into something out of one of our psychopathic nightmares come into a complete whole. The atmosphere is chilling and unhinging, the pacing is excellent, and I think this film is one of Jack Nicholson's best in his whole career.
I for one can't wait for the new Carrie.
