On Shuffle for most of the day:

The Tragically Hip - Yer Favourites

For those who don't know, the Hip are Canada's contribution to Rock and Roll and Gordon Downie is one of the most unique lead singers in the business, bar none.

Checking out what Jonny McGovern's been doing since his amazing "Sexy Nerd" (and, of course, since I was obsessing over Madonna's latest, I didn't notice that this is already 5 months old- I'm always the last to know):

Image

Image

Even the single promo cover admits that this was really done to pimp the video. And the video is interesting, if only that it pushes YouTube's sexual-content policy to breaking point with extreme (real? simulated?) shots of men's hard-ons in tiny basketball trunks raging to the beat. Not my favorite fetish of sorts but it's fun enough (for the obvious reasons). It's not very catchy, Jonny (who I think has a great voice) goes vocoder / Auto-Tune, the beat's not special, and there's a churchy choiry thing going on toward the end - the idea is charming but it doesn't endear me sonically to men's "junk" anymore than I was already. This just fails an anthem. McGovern really wants to be the gay Peaches and he's got a little ways to go if this was supposedly good enough to be a single.

(4 Minute Later Edit: Ah... "Man Areas" is Jonny's latest.

Another time.)

This amazing, bone-chilling live version of an already mind-blowing song:

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/T1RXVc4TYkU" frameborder="0"></iframe>

Like one user described so perfectly: "never thought angst could sound this good". He really sings his heart out, like it's his last time.

Thank you so much, Nostalgia Chick, for encouraging us to flashback on Will Smith. Ugh...

Image
"Just Cruisin" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1d5mgDyw9E

Image

One of the few songs this guy had anything to do with that I allowed myself to not despise during the (ultra pretentious) Big Willie Style years and, as fate would have it, it's not great. Far be it for me to claim to be a real expert on the skill of this particular artform but, I think Will Smith is a bad rapper. He had one mode, one tone: Party Guy. Smooth but upbeat. This song is downbeat and Will is a drag. He cannot... emote, really. He's not as cool as he thinks he is and tracks like this are all about how cool he thinks he is.

Image
"Will 2k" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y4X8mMQw9xs

Image

I literally stopped paying attention to him after "Just the Two of Us" became a hit and I just wanted to see Will crushed to death by his own ginormous head. And this hit(?) is proof that he couldn't score a single without directly ripping someone off. Name one other famous rapper of the 90's who had this many "I've heard this before, haven't I?" singles. Not even Puff Daddy / Sean Combs was this unoriginal. So, adding a hip-hop beat to "Rock the Casbah" is a neat novelty but nothing about the song is catchy or memorable beyond the beat.

Image
Cazwell, "I Seen Beyonce..." - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lHDMIsnTuoA

Image

Another Blip.tv reference, I'm afraid. Only... this one is by way of Needs More Gay, and to check out this guy Cazwell. Well, I did. And... until I finally came across this odd little gem, his other tracks were fairly invisible and bland. Kinda what I'd assume the soundtrack to an all-gay Jersey Shore would sound like. He's certainly not the worst rapper out there but- tracks like "Ice Cream Truck" should tantalize, not give you that feeling you get right before you run to the bathroom. That feeling sums up all 4 or so of the other Cazwell singles I've heard. This one's different, though. Strange that it really seems he (and/or his producers) decided to put their celebrity diss lyrics against a track that is legitimately fun to listen to; they decided that this one deserved better. This interests me because... of all his similarly, currently, obscure trash-clubbing peers (Loli Lux, Kreayshawn)... Cazwell has become fairly revered (insofar as Eric Henderson's approval can be considered high praise- definitely raises my eyebrow). As celebrity diss tracks go (actually, I'm coming up pretty dry on any others which weren't written, for example, by a celebrity bigger than the subject of the track), this one sounds like a joke. But a very clever one (my favorite line: "I seen Beyonce at J.C. Penny"). Cazwell's character's humility is questionable. But the rhymes are slick and given the trashiness of suggesting that he frequents Burger King in the first place- his tacky lyrical delivery is fitting.

Robin Williams, "Batty Rap" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xFn8dYw044

Image

Should I say "poor" Thomas Dolby, or- "I hate you" Thomas Dolby? No... no. Not Tommy. It's Robby that I hate. So, somewhere between this abomination, Toys, and his appearence on The Larry Sanders Show, Robin Williams was literally broadcasting his cocaine addiction to the world. Or, was he just an alcoholic at this time? Or, was he doing any - and every - thing he could get his hands on? This "song" would surely suggest Door #3, here. Before I beat this dead horse some more, I just want to say it deserves to be revisited as a cultural document. And because, well, this movie and its' music get the reputation of a kids' movie that missed the mark while something like Nothing but Trouble gets a reputation kin to a Hollywood-made Troll 2. But, musically, that movie had very fine selections on its' soundtrack. Proving that someone on that production really knew what they were doing. Something like "Batty Rap" is the actual musical equivalent to what Nothing but Trouble was visually (fair to say since the "story" is only told from one insane image to the next). The track is - of course - extended beyond its' scene in the film. Makes sense since that was so short. But instead of this being quirky, along the lines of Oingo Boingo, your typical Thomas Dolby, or Jim Carrey's "Cuban Pete," it plays more like an unintentionally creepy Marilyn Manson interlude. Or a satire on what, let's face it, Robin Williams would think is hip / quirky. This is just clueless. What kid on Earth would want to hear Robin Williams say "I'm reading by my genitals"? The idea to make this weird might have made it unique in the sea of early 90's experiments with irregular rap but... this is so far on the wrong side of unusual, it's almost nightmarish.

Eternally disappointed that the version which made it to CD is significantly different than the version used in the film, which was much better.
