When I saw this still, I wondered if Julie Walters was playing Mrs. Banks (Glynis Johns/"Sister Suffragette"), but looking via Wikipedia (which may not be accurate), that's not the case. Which made me realize if Jane/Michael are Wishaw's age, why aren't Mr. and Mrs. Banks still around as grandparents? They weren't that old.

It's true, they should still be alive. But I guess they won't appear in the film. Probably, because it's easier to tell the story with less characters. I think that's one of the reasons why many Disney protagonists don't have one or both parents or any siblings. It makes the story simpler and they can focus on the relationships between the relatives that are alive. I hope, though, that in this case they just don't mention them, so we can think they can still be alive and just don't take part in this adventure, instead of killing them.

Regarding what we were talking about Mr. and Mrs. Banks, I think the following pretty much confirms they won't be in the film:

Quote:
Twenty-five years is a long time for things to change on Cherry Tree Lane, but Number 17 still stands — and the home that once belonged to mean banker Mr. Banks is now inhabited by his son, sensitive banker Michael Banks.

By the way, while I was searching for info on this, I found the entire EW magazine article from last June scanned: http://www.gramunion.com/nerd-utopia.tu ... 1659560312

The color's odd but I guess I'm just used to Disney making every logo gold.

They had a test screening in Thousand Oaks, CA. this past Tuesday. It did not get a good reception. LMM rapping did not go over well. Music was forgettable. I will post more as I hear more.

I recall that rapscallian Dick van Dyke (DvD) pattering in Jolly Holiday. I was blissfully scandalized!

Bert and Chorus:

It's true that Mavis and Sybil 'ave ways that are winning

And Prudence and Gwendolyn set your 'eart spinning

Phoebe's delightful, Maude is disarming

Janice, Felicia, Lydia - charming

Cynthia's dashing, Vivian's sweet

Stephanie's smashing, Priscilla a treat

Veronica, Millicent, Agnes, and Jane

Convival company, time and again

Drocas and Phyllis and Glynis are sorts

I'll agree are three jolly good sports

But cream of the crop, tip of the top

It's Mary Poppins, and there we stop!

So *maybe* it's something like this?!

I want to give it the benefit of the doubt. I'm not a Hamilton fan, but I do like some of In the Heights, & I love the Moana soundtrack. I think that LMM is talented, but I agree w/ a poster at that forum that he doesn't have to rap in everything. But maybe it's more rhythmic talking, a la Bert, then anything else...maybe!

Good God. Now I wish he'd never started working at Disney. Even Moana's middling soundtrack isn't worth it.

My anticipation just plummeted to near zero.

Rapping?

This is the man who will pen new songs for The Little Mermaid remake. I guess we can expect Sebastian to rap in that now. Thoroughly disgusted with this news and hope Disney cuts or modifies the scene.

I honestly think it's fake. Yes, they tested the film for the first time this week, but everything else, which wasn't much, was probably made up.

We've already heard a bit of the score and it sounded very old fashioned (03:16):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rc-fto6eiLg

I know Lin-Manuel rapped in 'Hamilton', but do you really expect him to do the same thing here? He didn't even write the songs. Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman did! And it seems he thinks their work would make the Sherman brothers proud:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jgWVBfJchaQ

'Mary Poppins' was one of the studio's biggest triumphs and I expect 'Mary Poppins Returns' to mimic it as much as possible. They're going to play it safe. So, no, I'm not expecting to hear someone rap in it.

Oh, and that thread was deleted, by the way.

Plus, I think there's a toy fair in New York next month and I think they're going to reveal the Mattel dolls there like they did with 'Cinderella' three years ago.

Was there really a test screening? The movie isn't coming out until the end of the year- how much is ready, and how much did people see?

That said, no, rapping doesn't belong in Mary Poppins. I'm all for integrating different elements of music into productions, but, like, the original came out during the height of Beatlemania, and there's no rock n roll influence in it at all. And honestly, now that it's not the hottest thing on earth anymore, I want to admit it- I think Hamilton is the cheesiest thing ever, and if it's Lin-Manuel Miranda's attempt to prove that rap and traditional musicals can work together, then I'd say that he failed. I've seen him be talented elsewhere, but I don't think that LMM needs to be that ubiquitous.

There'll be a trailer at the Oscars tonight.

Lin-Manuel Miranda was asked about if there would be rapping in the film. He gave a vague answer saying it isn't exactly rapping before explaining that Dick Van Dyke's part in Jolly Holiday is technically rapping.
