DID...oh, Damsel in Distress...

I think it suits Eilonwy to be the first princess with an actual backbone in the Disney Canon (never mind that she's also ignored). I mean, for once you actually have a heroine who has to not only prop up the hero, but can actually make decisions for herself without having to wait for someone to get her or to simply run away and cry about it. After all, if not for Eilonwy finding Taran, he'd have spent the rest of his life in that dungeon.

Hmm, wondering about a live-action. Disney's already got Narnia for their fantasy series...so I doubt they'd want to do a live-action series for Chronicles of Prydain after their failure in the animated movie. Then again, we were subjected to live-action versions of 101 Dalmatians and The Jungle Book, as well as theatrical remakes for The Parent Trap, The Absent-Minded Professor, Freaky Friday, The Shaggy Dog, and eventually we're getting Swiss Family Robinson. So anything can happen.

Someone mentioned a video ban. What video ban ?
Think about this. Once bread becomes toast, you can't make it back into bread.

I don't know where it says that and the choice of word may be a bit strange.

But it's a fact that TBC was "lost" for several years, not heard of or released on any video format until quite a while after "everything else" was.

i only saw this film last year for the first time, i'd never even heard of it, which i think is a shame considering it is one of the classics

i thought it was a really good film though, i wouldnt call it amazing but it was good, i also found it quite scary in places, i dont mean it scared the life out of me, but i'm 21 and some bits were a bit  i think some kids would be terrified by it

i still havent bought it on dvd though, i normally wait till they end up in a sale lol

P.S. If you guys are looking to at least watch oop Disney DVDs join netflix. They got all the treasures for instance to rent out.

Ok, I finally watched it last night. Overall it was pretty dull. The Horned King really is a forgettable villian and none of the other characters really step up and steal the show. Hard to believe after watching this that just a short time later would come TLM, B&TB, Aladdin, & TLK.

Thanks to the Cauldron, the mistakes were given in and they were able to correct that + new technology of comupter graphic, and hence a famous Mermaid, a Big Beast, a Genie and a Lion were able to shine through Disney's history.

I have never ever seen The Black Cauldron. I might, however, rent it from the library, I kinda really want to see it. I haven't seen ALL of the DACs, I haven't even seen any of the package features. I know, it's bad. I'll probably rent them from the library sooner or later, or buy the first two package features in my extensive 4-Disc Collector's Edition DVD with the Limited Edition Tin!

I thought the three witches were the most entertaining characters in the movie (along with Eilonwy). It's interesting to see how much Ursula borrows from them (and Madame Medusa from The Rescuers). But all witches are the same, right?

I was just about to say "and yet you make kickass Ultimate Editions in the Ultimate Disney DVD thread", but then you mention it yourself!

I first saw The Black Cauldron in 2000, when Kram first got the Gold Collection VHS (yeah, we didn't go to DVD until 2001 with Snow White, and we only did because Kram bought it and thus justified getting a DVD player!). I thoroughly enjoyed it, found it to be a fun animated adventure film from Disney. Not quite as good as the adventures we'd find in Tarzan or Atlantis, but still, pretty good for the time. It was much too short for my taste, then again, Katzenberg did cut out some footage (can't remember if it's a few minutes of fully animated stuff or a lot of pencil-animation stuff).

I can see Disney re-releasing this one day, but only to give it an anamorphic transfer (which France has, and it's also restored/remastered!). A kickass multi-disc edition would be...kickass, but only in my dreams, sadly. Unless of course, I go out of my way to secure thousands of bucks to go film interviews and cut together a documentary with some public domain pictures (since it'd be an unauthorized and unofficial piece) and stills from the current DVD (which I own, therefore can use without commercial gain). Then I'd slap it on a DVD-R, put some cover art, and voila, have a very expensive fan-made 2-disc edition.

I believe he cutted out the longer scene of the undead army. one scene depict an undead cutting a man in half or some thing. Kinda brutal.[/b]

Yeah, I know what scenes were cut, but I can't remember if he cut them in pencil-animation form or fully-animated form.

One of the cuts was done badly and it causes a noticeable jump in the soundtrack that can still be heard on the film to this day.

I thought I'd read that they were already animated? maybe not.....I guess the only thing I really remember is that that one particular scene Escapay just mentioned was orignally going to be an attempt at some new format of 3D in which the skeleton ghosts were supposed to "fly" over the audience. I don't think any progress was ever made on it though, and the idea got abandoned.

and spottedfeather, as far as a "video ban" it was never actually banned, it just seemed like it. Disney never intially released it on the black diamond cassettes, and has long been in denial of its exsistance until the past few years. There was controversy over re-relasing it on video because at the time a "PG" animated feature didn't fare well, and the violence issues made it hard to get released.

I appreciate TBC!!! Woo-hoo! And, TBC was going to have hallograms in its theatrical run (kind of like 3D), but it would have been too expensive to install in all the theaters (I can't find where I read that online...). And, "Snow White" was the first Disney animated film to have footage cut (such as the "Music in Your Soup" sequence), not TBC.

"The Black Cauldron" definitely is different than other Disney films. I love Disney music, and yet I absolutely love TBC. I was 4 months old when it came to theaters, so I didn't know about it when it came out (duh). I grew up reading books about Disney, and somehow I never came across this film until I was a teenager. I finally found the VHS at our local mall at a flea market, and I fell in love with it. I had already seen a clip of it online, and when I saw Gurgi, I fell in love!!!! Gurgi is my favorite Disney character. He's so cute. The film is "dark", but one could argue that many Disney films have "dark" elements- the Queen in "Snow White", Stromboli, and definitely Chernabog can be considered dark. "Fantasia" has corpse bodies, and no one complains about that!

I'm glad that this thread exists and that so many of you appreciate this film!!!

its too bad the whole hologram thing didn't work out, that would've been quite interesting. I've read about it in quite a few books about disney, but it never goes into any detail about the process.

Gurgi is my third favorite Disney character, just behind 1.) Goofy and 2.) Stitch. Actually, before "Lilo & Stitch" came out, my screen name for all forums and web accounts was Goofygurgy(I was spelling it wrong). lol. I like "The Black Cauldron" alot. It's not good enough to make my top ten or anything, but it is a severely underappreciated film and I wish they would make a special edition and advertise it so that everyone could possibly feel the way I do about it. Most people I talk to haven't heard of it.

I FINALLY watched The Black Cauldron for the first time because my best friend bought it for me for Christmas...and I actually really enjoyed it!

Im kinda bummed that it turned out to be an underrated movie. I thought it was really interesting. I now think the Horned King is the creepiest evil Disney Villain. But yeah. I thought it was entertaining, and it had GREAT special effects. The animation was actually good. And it had its funny moments. Even though its different and a little dark and not your traditonal Disney movie, it was pretty good. I wouldnt rank it with my all time favorite Disney movies, but its definatly worth watching again.

I hope the re-lease it soon on a better DVD because I think it deserves it. Even though it probably wouldnt sell much.

My best friend has never seen it before either so I think He'll enjoy it aswell.[/i]
