crowning achievements. Set amid the majestic beauty of the Serengeti, Disney’s epic
coming-of-age saga tells of the love between a proud lion ruler Mufasa (James Earl
Jones) and his son Simba (Matthew Broderick), a naïve and curious cub who “just can’t
wait to be king.”

When Simba’s envious Uncle Scar (Jeremy Irons) schemes with his hyena henchmen,
including Shenzi (Whoopi Goldberg), trouble invades the kingdom. To the rescue comes
a hilarious meerkat named Timon (Nathan Lane) and that warmhearted warthog, Pumbaa
(Ernie Sabella) – and soon Simba joins in the carefree lifestyle of “Hakuna Matata.”
With Rafiki (Robert Guillaume) at his side, Simba reclaims his true destiny and joins the
“circle of life.”

To be honest, I'm just glad this film (and the others slated) WILL be coming out at some stage on DVD.
I used to worry about the bells and whistles, but in the end it is the movie that is the main thing (which is presumably on there too :D )
Can't wait for it to come out now...

Loomis,

I agree with you, it is about the movie, but it seems like a waste of the DVD format if special features aren't included. The question is how solid those special features are. In the beginning of DVD, Disney really disappointed me. The combination of next to no special features & high retail tag wasn't inviting. Now I look forward to almost every Disney DVD. They've really turned things around & put out quality discs. Well, except when they only release Full Frame. That's still frustrating.

Well. I can't say I'm particularly happy with this press release. I thought last year's "Beauty and the Beast" was a huge let down compared to their previous "Snow White" release, or even their other 'normal' collectors sets like "Atlantis:The Lost Empire" and "The Fantasia Legacy".

From what I see from this announcement, I see nothing to raise my spirits. I'm absolutely 100% against 'revisionist' filmmaking so I don't give a damn about "The Morning Report" and as for another remixing of the soundtrack for the Home Theatre, give me a break (I'm against sound remixes too). I'd much rather the time, effort and bandwidth was used on adding another commentary track or two. The lack of DTS doesn't bother me (it will be interesting to see if the UK release includes DTS, recently Disney have been adding DTS tracks to their international releases). I don't hold much hope of the "original" cut being the non-IMAX release either.

Where's all the contemporary features? What made "Snow White" so impressive was the clips and audio from when the film was actually made. It looks like Disney are going to repeat the mistake of thier "Beauty and the Beast" release by including 'all new' material, when perfectly servicable 'making of...' material already exists. I'd rather see the full, contemporary 'Making Of' special rather than an all new modern one (and why the heck are we getting a special making of "The Morning Report"?)

So what would be ideal release be? As well as the usual virtual art gallaries I'd like to see:

1 ) The old LD commentary track (playable over the original edition only)
2 ) An all new commentary track, involving voice talent, the animators and musicians Elton John and Lebo M. (playable over the special edition only)
3 ) The original television special "The Making of The Lion King"
4 ) A feature on the Music of "The Lion King" including Work in Progress recordings.
5 ) A feature on Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park.
6 ) An episode of the "Timon and Pumbaa" animated series (the first?)
7 ) A feature on the Broadway Musical, including a virtual copy of the show's brochure.
8 ) A feature on "The Lion King" around the world.
9 ) All the usual stuff - a quick set-top game for the kids, gallaries of production artwork, research trip photos, character designs, animation progression reels, posters and trailers.

However, I'll end on a positive note - while the annoucement of "Sleeping Beauty" may not look that appealing, containing none of the 'gimmicks' of the "Lion King" release, you've got a cracking 2 disc set to look forward to before the release of "The Lion King".

Those are all great features. I wouldn't have thought of the Timon & Pumbaa TV show pilot, but that's a good idea!

Another nice thing to include would be the award show footage. I don't recall watching the Oscars in '95, but with three nominated songs, I'm sure at least one of those was performed? And it did win the Golden Globe for Best Picture, that would be cool to include.

The "Making of" documentary was released on both LD and VHS...it'd be really stupid not to release it on DVD.

Unofficial features

Post by Jules »

Some websites and online stores have posted these unofficial features:

* Collectible packaging opens like a book.

Custom hinged two-disc keep-case with paperboard slipcover. (Will it be like Roger Rabbit's Vista Series or Beauty and the Beast's case?)

* Dobly Digital 5.1 Audio Tracks:
English
French
Spanish

* Subtitles: English, French

* Closed Captioned

On Disc 2:

* Art Galleries:

Background layer assembly galleries
Elephant Graveyard
EFX animation galleries
Film character design galleries
Jungle flora
Pride Lands
Pride Rock
Rafiki's tree
Stage musical publicity

* The Animal Kingdom

* An audio sequel

* Full circle

* International release

* Multi-language reel

* Production research trip

* Reflection on The Lion King

* Sound design

* Storyboard-to-film comparision

* Theatrical Trailer(s) - Original and Imax theatrical?

* And much more!

Producer Don Hahn told the OC Register that "we debated [adding new scenes]. Essentially, we decided to leave it alone. We said, let's just do the restoration." So the colors are sharper and the details more detailed, and the soundtrack has been remixed. Eager to capitalize on the film's success, Disney has also produced a wealth of tie-in products for the film, shooting documentary footage in Africa and an interview with soundtrack composer Elton John for inclusion in a DVD release next fall. "The list [of DVD extras] is a mile long..."

Information from Colin Jacobson's interview with Don Hahn:

Colin Jacobson: Have you had any involvement with the upcoming Lion King DVD?

Don Hahn: I have, actually. We're working on it very hard. At this point we're pulling together interviews and going through our closets and getting our video field trips. We found this great video of Lebo M recording music in South Africa for the movie, and interviews with Hans Zimmer and Elton.

CJ: The Lion King laserdisc was one of the greatest ever made. I would guess that the commentary will come over from that, right?

DH: Yes, we'll use that literally. What was great about that commentary is that it was done back in 1994 or 1995, so the movie was very fresh. I think a lot of the elements from the laserdisc were fantastic. We want to pull those over, but we also want to pull in elements like Julie Taymor’s take on The Lion King and talk about it with some perspective of the years gone by now.

Hi Luke,
Thanks for providing us with the FULL press release. All other DVD information sites just posted the synopsis and features list.

A paragraph above should say:

Eager to capitalize on the film's success, Disney has also produced a wealth of tie-in products for the film, shooting documentary footage in Africa and an interview with soundtrack composer Elton John for inclusion in a DVD release this fall.

Opps.

I have unconfirmed reports that that the Special Edition Collector's Gift set will include a hardcover art book. Some people in the United Kingdom believe that it will be as thick as Region 2's Snow White book: about 200 pages.

I hope this helps.

These specs are mildly disappointing.

-- Why waste another DD track on "enhancing" the mix for home theater systems? I think we'd all prefer DTS 5.1 to a second DD5.1 EHT track. And what was wrong with the remix used for the IMAX release? I thought that sound mix was great.

-- As previously mentioned, where the heck is the making-of documentary from 1994? This wouldn't bother me that much if there was a new one on there, but there's not; we get The Making of The Morning Report, but not a making of for the whole feature. I didn't see a mention of trailers either.

2099net - An episode of "Timon and Pumbaa" would probably have been a nice inclusion, but stuff in the show (perticularly how Timon and Pumbaa meet and their backstories) probably contradicts stuff in TLK 1.5, and thus it was left off. If not, I wouldn't be too suprised to see a couple episodes of the show on the TLK 1.5 DVD.

Yes, the additional information does help. It's appreciated!

I hope you'll register and stick around!

That's right, still no new info there.

A 200-page book would be great. I'd hope it's enough stuff to make the $20 higher SRP worth it!

Some websites say that a new music video of "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" will be on disc 1. I heard that Elton John performed the song for MTV.

$20 for a 200 page book? Not bad. My friend got me the 200 page "The Art of The Lion King" for about $45. Of course, this book is about 3 times as big (are = length x width) as the "Special Edition" book.

Perhaps they're just referring to the "Abandoned Concept" of "Can You Feel the Love Tonight"? I don't know what that is, though.

According to http://www.lionking.org/movies/,

The "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" music video is Elton John's mixed live-action/animated footage video, as seen on MTV and elsewhere.

http://www.lionking.net/otherstuff.shtml has the cut pencil version of "Can You Feel the Love Tonight."

Maybe the retail stores are refering to the Abandoned version. Or maybe not. Hmm.

Looks like we'll need to wait until October or for Disney to update The Lion King SE website to find out.

Here's a link to the existing Coffee table sized Art Of The Lion King.

When Disney UK released "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" it came with a small sized reproduction of the "Art of Snow White" coffee table book (but in softcover). It's likely the book with the gift set will have the same contents as the current book (with perhaps some additions for the "Special Edition" release). I'm still hoping the UK release will get the book for 'free' like we did for Snow White, even if it is in softcover (but then the question must be asked, why not for "Beauty and the Beast"?)

In case anyone is interested, here's the Snow White coffee table sized book: Amazon.com.

Sorry.. I'm from germany and my english is still not very good... ;)

I'll think the feature list is not very clear and we will only know whats really on the discs when we have it...

I'll still hope the DVD will have the LD Features and more... I can't understand why they don't put all on the disc they have. There are so many great things, they could include. Why making new stuff that nobody really needs???

I was also a little disappointed about the BatB Features... I hope they make it better this time with lion king...

Boxed set case?

Post by Starion »

I was also a little disappointed about the BatB Features
I too am disapointed at the of "Beatuy and the Beast" Platinum Edition. I hope the Lion King and other Special Edition DVDs will have fun and interesting features for us Disney fans.

FYI:

I found the following information on Amazon.com:

The Lion King - Special Edition Collector's Gift Set

* Gift set includes 5 exclusive character portarit drawnings signed and sketched by the original animators and a new "The Lion King" Special Edition book all enclosed in a slipsleeve case

I never heard of a "slipsleeve case." I think the drawings and book might be in this case that opens like a book? Then the big black box will be a regular cardboard box? We'll have to wait and see.

The "regular" $25 DVD may still be in a double Amaray.
