Gee, it astounds be how subtle that propaganda was [/sarcasm]!

Bush must've had these in his video library for years, because he has certainly learnt a thing or two about it :)

HIGHLY annticipated. The next month can't go fast enough...

Wow.

As an avid WWII enthusiast (not of the war, but the "genre") and Disney fanatic I simply cannot wait for this set. I have said from the beginning that I thought this would probably end up being my favorite of the Treasures.

Many thanks for the screen caps!

Amazing! I must have these... it's not even a matter of wanting them, I NEED this DVD set! This looks like one of those sets where you will just be watching and your draw will drop constantly in disbelief. Just seeing any type of war propaganda from Disney is just really odd, there's just something weird about it that fascinates me. Anyway, cool pics!

Does this set include the cartoon where it's Pay Day, and a Scrooge-like duck is telling him to save, while a Sleazy Duck with a Hitler-esque moustache is telling him to Spend? I remember, the narrator saying something like "Save for taxes? Or Spend for the Axis?"

Definately the least anticipated treasure of any of the waves for me.

Blatant pro-war propoganda.

It saddens me that the military basically stole the Disney studios for the period war and the awesome creativity that had proceeeded the war was stifled for this stuff. Although it was nearly as bad as the horrific racial stereotyping of the Warner Brothers cartoons of the period, it is still not very appealing to me.

I am torn as a Disney completist as to whether or not to buy this.

Yes, it is going to be on the set. It is called "The Spirit of '43".

Wow, I don't know if I can beleive all this... After all, it is April the 1st! :p I'll be geting it as soon as it is released (even before, actually).
Thanks a lot Luke!

I love propoganda. This country doesn't have enough of it. It's very effective and I can't wait to see the cartoons and especially "Victory Through Air Power" and see how it changed the way people thought about the war.

Okay, I respect the fact that this set does not appeal to you and you have no desire to buy it. But to call it "Blatant pro-war propoganda" is borderline ignorant of the facts of the time and setting.

This is a historic collection of the efforts of one of our most beloved studios that chose to do it's part to aid the war efforts on the homefront. Is it propoganda...certainly. Is it pro-war...absolutely. But this was all about rallying the population on the homefront and providing a moral boost to the boys on the frontlines.

For the United States, WWII was not a war of conquest. It was not a situation where the US set out to expand its territorial borders. Nor was it an act of aggression on our part to dominate a region and make conquests of its people and resources. The US was attacked by Japan and subsequently declared war upon by both the Japanese and German States. As a result this nation rallied together and became THE single greatest power on the planet at that time.

So what is your alternative? Do you think we should have tried harder to negotiate with Hitler as he continued his march through Europe. Just like the great heroes we have today to fight the war on terrorism, there were thousands of great heroes and patriots that sacreficed to destroy the Nazi and Japanese threat. If people like you had prevailed, we'd be speaking German now.

I hope you're not referring to the current war in Iraq as a "conquets of its people and resources" because if you feel that way, you're not borderline ignorant, you are ignorant. I really don't think you feel that way, so I mean no offense towards you.

Now let me respond to the actual posts

This is by far my most anticipated DVD of the year. I love history, especially WWII, and I have never seen any of this footage and artwork. Walt Disney apparently played a huge role on the homefront.

I wish the Disney company continued to do things like this. It's a shame how the left has led the country to go overboard with political correctness.

Not at all.

In the context of today I think this set should first and foremost be seen as a document of history.

Current war-like activities have been brought up. It's in the nature of things that tremendous forces are at work justifying while it's going on. I'd say there's hardly any point in assessing any kind of "objective justness" in this matter until more years have passed...

First a word on the above quote. The military did not steal Disney, his studios, or his staff. In fact Disney was a huge supporter of the war effort voluntarily. Look at Victory Through Air Power -- that movie was not made with government backing whatsoever! In fact, Disney made it in an attempt to show the miltary planners how crucial air superiority could be to war effort. Yes, gasp, Walt Disney wanted to rain destruction down on the heads of the Axis powers. He wanted to crush them completely so they couldn't fight anymore. You know, what? He was right! World War II was a nasty, horrific war, but it was justified. No, I do not like war, nobody does. There are time, however, when war is the lesser of two evils. World War II was such a time.

Back to the DVD -- this set and the Donald set are the two I am most eagerly awaiting. Although I work in the IT field, my degrees are in U.S. History. Marry Disney and history together, and you have my undivided interest.

Let me clarify - I wholeheartedly agree America's entry into the second world war was necessary. Hitler had to be stopped, he would not have stopped before he had conquered the world and stopping him before he held all of Europe and most of Africa was necessary. In fact, America should have entered the war before it was attacked.

I just do not agree with the use of cartoons to justify war to children and for that matter adults. War is serious. The Cartoons do not tend to be a real representation of war(with perhaps the exception of Victory through Air Power) which is the one part of the set I would like to see. I despise Hogan's Heroes for the same reason. What an utter total misrepresentation of war. But everything it did wrong, MASH did right.

Secondly, I am not ignorant. I am not an American but my college electives were all history with three American history and political science courses. I am not anti-American but I do not support the war in Iraq. Right war, wrong reasons. There are twenty other tinpot dictators out there that need to be taken out just as bad as Saddam did.

May we all learn from our history and our mistakes to build a better future for all.

Peace to all God's children.

I don´t think it was to justify the war that they made these cartoons at the Disney Studio - except maybe Education for Death.
Some where propaganda films for earning money for the cost of America and Canada being drawn into the war - All Together, The New Spirit and The Spirit of ´43.
Some tried to make some fun of the time (and the war) - such as the Donald Duck cartoons.
And there where training films produced for the Army, Navy and so on - and the latter was not shown to the overall public - just to those inside the fields the cartoons where produced for. They where classified instruction-films.
