101 Dalmatian Street

Post by Sotiris »

I didn't believe 101 Dalmatians could look any worse than they already did in the 1997 TV show. Disney has proven me wrong.  New animated TV series titled "101 Dalmatian Street" coming in 2018. :|

The series is not produced by Disney Television Animation which is odd because when it comes to "heritage" properties, the job almost always goes to DTVA.
One of the big new announcements on Tuesday, and set to roll out around the world from the end of 2018, “101 Dalmatian Street” is inspired by Dodie Smith’s 1956 novel and Walt Disney’s 1961 “One Hundred and One Dalmatians.” But it is has been updated and moved to contemporary London. It depicts the adventures of eldest dalmatian siblings Dylan and Dolly, parents Doug and Delilah, and 97 younger puppies, all with names beginning with “D,” who live all by themselves at the titular address. London’s Passion Animation Studios will lead-produce. Maria O’Loughlin writes, Miklos Weigert directs.

Ross showed a first-look development trailer, created by Passion. “This teaser is the biggest, messiest family comedy you could imagine,” he said. Narrated byDolly, interrupted by Dylan, it showed the parents at their job – dad dalmatian works as firefighter – Dolly and Dylan running the house in their absence, and having fun on the London Eye. Animation looked fast-paced, eye-popping in color and kinetic, featuring knockabout (canine) family fun.

Penned by Maria O’Loughlin and directed by Miklos Weigert, 101 Dalmatian Street is set in 21st century London and follows the adventures of 101 dogs whose names all begin with the letter “D.” The show is based on a pitch by Anttu Harlin and Joonas Utti from Gigglebug Entertainment, and is developed by Disney’s original animation team in London with Passion Animation Studios. It has been ordered for 48 11-minute episodes and two 22-minute specials, and will begin rolling out around the world in fall 2018.

Orion Ross, VP and head of animation, digital and acquisitions, said: “We’re incredibly excited about this fresh new take on a beloved Disney classic. There’s a big old-fashioned house at number 101 Dalmatian Street where a huge family of 101 dogs live all by themselves, without a human owner, setting up the biggest, messiest and furriest family comedy you could ever imagine.”

The new series takes place in contemporary London, and follows the adventures of eldest siblings Dolly and Dylan, their Mum and Dad, and 97 younger brothers and sisters. Maria O’Loughlin (Head Writer) and Miklos Weigert (Director) will discuss the design process and building a big, varied cast of characters. Orion Ross (Disney), Shamik Majumdar (Disney) and Cara Speller (Passion Pictures) will talk through the production process. The panel will be moderated by Will Brenton (Wish Films).

Disney Channel has in the works 101 Dalmatian Street, inspired by Dodie Smith’s 1956 novel and Walt Disney’s 1961 film 101 Dalmatians. “Disney has a wealth of heritage properties, and that allows us to draw on a well of storytelling and reimagine classics for a new audience,” Ross says.

My God.

Ok let's try to say something positive. So I like the backgrounds. The colours are rich and the lighting and shading is on point.

Those character designs though? Holy crap that's ugly. Why do all the Disney channel shows look so damn ugly? Is it a new rule?

I'm not going to agree with you on that. The colors are flat and monochromatic, while the lighting/shading is all over the place. There isn't a clear source of light and there's no shading on the characters making them look plastered onto the background instead of being part of it.

It's a trend that's plaguing TV animation for a while now. Hope it goes away soon.

I am a lifelong die-hard fan of 101 Dalmatians. There is only the adult dog in this picture that puts me off, and it may have just been caught on a bad frame/expression.
I agree this is following a different animation trend of newer Disney shows and style. I would like to see it first before adding further judgement. I do like the background animation.

I kind of like the muted colours. That's what makes it rich to me. And I'm generally drawn to warm colours so it looks pleasant.
Sotiris wrote:There isn't a clear source of light and there's no shading on the characters making them look plastered onto the background instead of being part of it.
Yeah I should not have used the term lighting here, because you're right, it's unclear where the source is. Well, there seem to be multiple, but they don't make much sense. To be fair, it's not an art style that necessarily adheres to the laws of psychics, so I can look past that and assume them to be artistic liberties. Shading on the backgrounds looks fine to me.

And obviously those character design stick out like a sore thumb. They're inexcusable.

But cut me some slack Sotiris, I was trying to be positive about something Disney and it's damn hard these days. :P

You know what, I actually liked the aforementioned series from 1997, despite not going completely gaga for it. But these designs... oh my god... At least the designs from the previous show were a little more appealing than these ones

Not sure what to make of it...though we've seen far worse in recent years..Just take your pick...any pick...the glorious tv animation of my youth is long gone. I long for Darkwing Duck instead of Rick & Morty...more Aladdin and less Gravity Falls...the deplorable easy to forget animation nowadays is an insult to anything that came before...90's revival please!

New info and images.
Last year’s presentation saw the announcement and first images for the new adaptation of a Disney classic, “101 Dalmatian Street.” This year Disney updated what TV audiences will see with new stills, animation and story details, which will be expanded on in a Works in Progress presentation on Thursday.

In the new adaptation, the dogs still live in Northern London, but gone are the dark, sketchy backgrounds of the classic feature, replaced with “Our take on North London with super rich backgrounds and the black and white puppies in front of it,” according to Ross.

One of the biggest challenges the team faced in this adaptation was naming all of the pups, especially under the mandate that each must start with the letter D. “I’m trying to think about what sort of prize we could set,” said Ross, “for the first person who can tell all 101 names, get them in order and without repeating.”
Source: https://variety.com/2018/tv/festivals/d ... 202843108/
Ross revealed details about 101 Dalmatian Street, an original animated series inspired by Dodie Smith’s 1956 novel and Walt Disney’s 1961 film 101 Dalmatians. The new series takes place in 21st century London and follows the adventures of eldest siblings Dylan and Dolly, their parents Doug and Delilah, and 97 younger puppies whose names also all begin with “D.” The series will premiere on Disney Channel across Europe, the Middle East and Africa in late 2018 and roll out around the world in 2019.

“This is a busy and exciting year for us,” said Ross. “We have a broad and diverse animation slate that embraces a huge variety of characters, styles and stories. 101 Dalmatian Street is just one series but is delivering a whole world of urban fun with its setting in modern London and its epically amplified take on the chaotic warmth of family life. We are thrilled to have this chance to riff on a much-loved Disney classic and we have assembled a great team of storytellers to do it.”

I don't like how these dalmatians won't be the ones from the original movie, but then again I wouldn't want them tarnished by the likes of this. It's probably better this way then.

The only silver lining to this abomination is that it's a re-imagining and hence non-canon.

I might watch the first episode or two to check this out since I've always loved OH&OD, but I can't say it looks any good. Sounds like the typical cartoon fodder you see on Cartoon Network. Not that I'm necessarily hating on Disney since they're marketing for a certain age of people, just I have no interest.
