I knew if there was enough of a problem, Disney would remove it to avoid controversy. Who knows what they were thinking putting something 20+ minutes long in front of another movie anyway.

I dunno. I found the complaints kinda ridiculous in this case. You get more content for the same price. What's the big deal?

Same. People really need to get over it.

Adrian Molina spoke about the controversy.
Adrian Molina, co-director and writer on Pixar’s “Coco,” is weighing in on the “Frozen” short that’s making some people un poco loco. In theory, the two films seem like a good pairing. “Coco” is a story about a Mexican boy learning about his family during Día de los Muertos, while “Olaf’s Frozen Adventure” shows the animated snowman trying to find family traditions for Anna and Elsa to celebrate.

“We’ve always, even at the conception, liked this idea that these are two stories about family traditions, and understanding what your family traditions are,” Molina said in a conversation with HuffPost Thursday. “It is longer than, I think, any other short that has ever been attached to one of these films, so I’ve heard that that has taken people by surprise,” Molina said, addressing the mixed reactions.

Molina said that the longer format was “a little bit of an experiment.” Part of the reason the “Frozen” short was paired with “Coco,” he explained, was that they just needed a short. “This year was a particular situation where we had two films out from Pixar in the same year,” he said. The short that was already in the works ― “Lou” ― aired ahead of “Cars 3″ in June, he noted, so “Coco” was in need. “I think it was early on in 2017 we had heard that Disney was working on this ‘Frozen’ short and made the decision to pair the two at that point,” Molina said.

Why did Disney decide to put these films together in the first place? During a conversation on Thursday with Yahoo Entertainment, Coco co-director Adrian Molina explained.

“This year, we came out with two films: We had Cars 3 in the summer, and then Coco in the fall,” Molina told Yahoo. “Attached to Cars 3 was Lou, a [Pixar] short that we had developed in the studio. But for Coco, we didn’t have anything ready for it. And so Disney [Animation] contacted us and said, ‘We’ve got this Frozen short, and it’s kind of in the same wheelhouse in that it deals with the themes of family traditions and knowing what your family traditions are.’ And were like, oh, that sounds like a nice pairing.”

According to Molina, Pixar did not at any point develop a short specifically to pair with Coco, because of the time crunch of releasing two films in a single year. (While Pixar also released two films in 2015, one of those films, The Good Dinosaur, was originally slated for 2014. With that exception, the studio has released one film a year since 2006.)

As for the length of Olaf’s Frozen Adventure, Molina acknowledged, “It is longer than any short that has preceded one of our films before. So that was a little bit of an experiment.”

Disney pulling a Kevin Spacey with Olaf? But they're just cartoon characters...

You know, it didn't even hit me until now that coco is the first pixar movie without a pixar short. Unless I'm mistaken? That kinda bums me out.

I don’t think Toy Story has one. I think the tradition started with A Bug’s Life.

I just got back from Coco, and I can imagine that if you hate or even are just indifferent to the Frozen characters, the short will feel like a chore to sit through, since its a pretty by the numbers holiday story. But it didn't really feel that long to me, probably b/c I was too distracted taking in all that old world architecture and gorgeous scenery porn. My gosh this short had some lovely winter backdrops, much more atmospheric, I felt, than in the actual film. As for the songs, didnt care for them at all, they felt like "songs written for tv" which of course they were.

I thought the songs were great. Almost as good as the ones in the original Frozen.

I will say... I thought it was hilarious how Arandelle doesn't have a royal guard... So Elsa literally went door to door asking her townspeople to go out into the wild where wolves were attacking Olaf... For starters... She wasted time (Sven already told her he was out in the woods), put her people in danger.. and didn't even think of using her powers or even conjuring Marshmallow....

they don't have guards for the same reason no one has armed weapons. Elsa and Anna need to be the ones to try to the solve the problems presented in the films, not sit back and let the guards handle it. Also imagine how different Frozen would have been if Hans had a pistol or musket instead of a sword! :P

Sure, Disney. As if anyone's really going to buy this.
Olaf’s Frozen Adventure, one of Disney’s less lauded short films, will soon be leaving theaters after screening in front of Pixar’s Coco, the animated film inspired by Mexico’s Day of the Dead. Yet while some have suggested it’s a direct response to poor audience reactions, EW has learned that isn’t the case. Olaf’s Frozen Adventure was always promoted and scheduled as a limited run, EW has confirmed, with its theatrical play slated to conclude next week, as has recently been reported. “This was always promoted as a limited run so it’s not really a story — the end of our Olaf theatrical play is coming next week,” a Disney representative told EW. “All our ads and messaging called it as such.”

A Disney rep told Yahoo Entertainment that Olaf’s Frozen Adventure was always intended as a limited release — and indeed, a press release sent to Yahoo in June stated that the short would play in theaters “for a limited time beginning Nov. 22” (though the actual length of the run is unspecified).

Ok, fine, but breaking a 19 year tradition is nothing to sneeze at either. For toy story I will cut them some slack, it was the first time we saw cg feature length film after all. We had no expectations.

Yes, it started with A Bug’s Life. However, Toy Story 2 and Finding Nemo didn't receive new shorts, but old ones. Luxo Jr. and Knick Knack, respectively.

I think they announced it as a limited run in case it wasn't well received, as it has happened, but they are clearly removing it now because of the negative reactions.

They might not have been new, but I don't think most of us had seen them. Though I did recognize Luxo jr from the other shorts they aired on sesame street.

Anyway, even if they didn't know how long it would play in front of coco, it seems obvious that they wouldn't keep it there. a 20 minute short, even if well received would have cut into how many show times they could squeeze in, cutting into their profits. It was probably just a matter of playing it for a couple weeks or a bit longer.

This "controversy" is really stupid and silly. The featurette is a good pairing as they have similar themes. People are getting more movie for the same price. When does that even happen with Disney or any studio? I think people meaning the adults, not the kids are mad about it because they don't like Frozen. This may be a problem for selling Frozen 2 to people who are still tired of the Frozen phenomenon.

I think it's more that the masses are idiots and many of them thought they'd went to the wrong film when the short went on so long. Then they walked to the front of the theater with their screaming toddlers and asked about it, became enraged because they had to ask a question at all (when if they'd looked ahead of time, they would've known about the short--but in parent speak, it's always someone else's fault because any effort on their part is too much effort).

What's worse is that their children become uncontrollable after about an hour of sitting. With the extra 20 minutes of the Frozen short, that's 50 minutes of children running up and down the aisles, spilling popcorn and throwing toys everywhere, blowing snot bubbles and causing the other theatergoers to get pissed off and walk to the front of the theater to complain, etc. Just a trainwreck for the poor theater employees all around.

Apparently, both shorts were even released on VHS before playing in front of Toy Story 2 and Finding Nemo, but yes, I suppose they were new to most people when they were screened with those movies. And though they weren't actually new, Pixar didn't break the tradition of releasing a short before their full-length features.

Looks like you won't have to wait long to catch Olaf's Frozen Adventure again. ABC is set to air it next Thursday at 8pm! Awkward considering it was originally meant to air on ABC all along.
