There's still hope for an 8th season! :D
The Live+Same Day ratings understandably dropped, but Dungey noted after the ABC executive session at TCA that “ratings have been a little bit lower on Friday than they were on Sunday, but in delayed viewing, where we were averaging a bump of about 55% before, this year’s been into the triple digits, so the actual fan base really hasn’t shifted very much. It’s more that they’ve been watching more time-shifted since we’ve been on Friday.”

Dungey said Once creators/executive producers Eddy Kitsis and Adam Horowitz “are going to be coming in shortly to talk with us about what they would want to be doing if they had another season. I can’t really say until we’ve had that conversation.”

Turning to Once Upon a Time, which just entered its annual midseason hiatus, Dungey says the low “live” numbers (Season 7 is averaging 2.5 million viewers and a 0.5 rating) aren’t painting a full picture of the show’s loyal audience, seeing as delayed viewing‚ which last season averaged around 55 percent, now is in the triple digits (120 percent for Season 7A). “So the actual fan base (measured by total audience) really hasn’t shifted very much. It’s more that they’ve been watching it more time-shifted since we’ve been on Friday,” she noted. As for the prospect of renewal, she is waiting to hear the Season 8 plan from co-creators Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis.

Though Once Upon a Time and Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. have been struggling in the ratings since their respective moves to Friday nights, the two dramas have potential to return next season. “I would say I’m cautiously optimistic,” ABC boss Channing Dungey told reporters at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour Monday. “It’s always hard at this point in January to know because some of it is also dependent on your new development and how you feel about those things, so that’s why it’s really hard at the top of the year to know exactly what’s going to happen.”

In its rebooted seventh season, Once Upon a Time has been averaging 3.7 million total viewers and a 1.1 in the 18-49 demographic season to date. “The thing about Once Upon a Time is that the ratings have been a little bit lower on Friday than they were on Sunday, but our delayed viewing, which we were averaging a bump of about 55 percent, this year has been into triple digits, so the actual fanbase really hasn’t shifted very much,” Dungey says. “It’s more that they’ve been watching it more time-shifted since we’ve been on Friday.”

Dungey notes that a potential season 8 would also depend on the creative, which she has not yet heard. “Eddy [Kitsis] and Adam [Horowitz] are going to be coming in shortly to talk with us about what they would want to be doing if they had another season, so I can’t really say until we’ve had that conversation,” Dungey said.

He reminds me of Patrick Wilson in terms of looks. Wonder if they'll push him as Zelena's true love.

While this was expected, Dungey's optimistic comments gave me hope it would be renewed for at least another season. It's a mistake they're cancelling it. With the company's emphasis on synergy and cross-promotion, the show had been a great vehicle in accomplishing that. They're being short-sighted. It could still have been very useful to them down the road.

I feel this is the end of an era. I'm really going to miss it. I always enjoyed the show's spin on Disney properties. It was the one place where forgotten Disney characters were being kept alive. One thing's for sure, this show was one of a kind. Dramas, comedies and procedurals by the dozen but there'll never be another show like this. Farewell, Once Upon a Time. :(

Finally.

S1-S5 + the musical episode + OUATiW are the only parts of this franchise I'll revisit. I'll still have fond memories of Lana Parrilla, Rebecca Mader, Jennifer Morrison, and Colin O'Donoghue, along with other actors in smaller roles (like Robbie Kay, Victoria Smurfit, Elliot Knight, Sam Witwer, etc.). I'll check out any future projects they're a part of in the future. And I'll never stop returning especially to certain brilliant episodes (like "Our Decay" or "Sympathy for the De Vil"). OUAT was a good show--emphasis on the 'WAS'--but all good things must end.

One season too late. Should have ended while it was still somewhat passable as good last season. Just glad they came to their senses, and by they, I mean ABC when they saw the plummeting ratings. It's just deserts for this failure of a show.

The series was a true great one. One of the few shows I reeeeally loved. Sotiris was right, it was a true original. I'll miss the show greatly, but it also feels like a fine time to end.

What is this Once Upon a Time opera they mentioned?!

They're referring to "Once Upon a Time: The Rock Opera". It's an unofficial, stage musical parody. You can watch the trailer, here.

I will miss the show but I'm kind of glad they are ending it. I agree with the sentiments expressed elsewhere that they should have ended it at the end of Season 6, although Season 7 hasn't been completely without charm.

And who knows? With the general lack of creativity these days, I'm sure they'll reboot it (maybe for Netflix) in about 10 years along the lines of Gilmore Girls, Will and Grace, Roseanne . . . .

That stinks. I hope they at least don’t end the season with an (unresolved) cliffhanger.

Again, I'm just hoping the very last episode doesn't end with a cliffhanger because that would be horse*censored*.

Even if there is a finale that wraps everything up, I'm not sure how satisfying it'll be. I imagine most of the big stars won't be returning since Jennifer Morrison will only come back for one episode each season. Maybe she'll make an exception though for the finale.

The showrunners confirmed the show won't end on a cliffhanger.
Q: Has ABC given you enough notice to be able to properly wrap things up?

Edward Kitsis: Yes, I would say that we did not go into this season assuming there would be a season 8, so we had two paths for the finale — one where it was closed-ended, one where it was open-ended. We had been building toward it the whole year anyways, so instead of a cliffhanger, it will just be a closed-ended story that wraps it up. But we’re prepared and ready, so we weren’t shocked by it.
