Post by Sotiris »

The Queen's Council is a book series that combines historical reality with fiction to tell the re-imagined stories of the Disney Princesses.

Happily ever after is only the beginning as Belle takes on the responsibility of becoming queen and learns to balance duty, love, and sacrifice, all while navigating dark political intrigue—and a touch of magic. It’s 1789 and France is on the brink of revolution.

Belle has finally broken the Enchantress’s curse, restoring the Beast to his human form, and bringing life back to their castle in the province of Aveyon. But in Paris, the fires of change are burning, and it’s only a matter of time before the rebellion arrives on their doorstep. Belle has always dreamed of leaving her provincial home for a life of adventure. But now she finds herself living in a palace, torn between her roots as a commoner, and her future as a royal. When she stumbles across a mysterious, ancient magic that brings with it a dire warning, she must question whether she is ready for the power being thrust on her, and if being Queen is more than just a title.

Rebel Rose is the first in the Queen’s Council series, an empowering fairy tale reimagining of the Disney Princesses—and the real history behind their stories—like you’ve never seen before.

She brought honor on the battlefield. Now comes a new kind of war...

Following the war that made her a hero, Mulan spends her days training a militia of female warriors to protect their homes and lands. But when Shang arrives in her village with an invitation to the Imperial City from the emperor himself, her relatively peaceful life is upended. Upon her arrival at the palace, the aging emperor decrees that, having proven herself a great leader in battle, Mulan will be his heir and take the throne. Mulan is unsure of this path for her future, but before she can decide whether to accept the responsibility, the emperor unexpectedly dies.

As soon as Mulan accepts the mantle of empress, it becomes clear that not everyone is on her side. Her ministers are working against her behind the scenes, and the Huns sense a weakness in the throne. When one of Mulan’s own militia members comes under suspicion as a traitor, Mulan has no idea whom she can trust. But the Queen’s Council helps Mulan uncover her true destiny. With renewed strength and the wisdom of those that came before her, Mulan will own her power, save her country, and prove once again that, crown or helmet, she was always meant to lead. This fierce reimagining of the girl who became a warrior blends fairy-tale lore and real history—with a Disney twist.

In the second novel within the sweeping YA historical fantasy series Queen's Council, Mulan takes center stage as she is named empress of a people who do not want her, forbidden from marrying the man she loves, and facing a potential coup, she must return to the battlefield to fight for her right to rule.

Jasmine thought that she had earned her happily ever after when she and Aladdin defeated Jafar. Then her beloved father dies and, overnight, all her plans for the future change. Instead of her wedding, she's now planning a funeral and a coronation—her coronation, to become the first woman to rule Agrabah. Jasmine has always been headstrong, but for the first time in her life, she finds herself faltering.

Then from beyond the grave, her father seems to pass along a message: Someone is coming. She must find the book. Before Jasmine can figure out what that means, her claim to the throne is called into question.

Her father's old counsellors decree that the best way to determine the true ruler is a tournament; a series of tests, each one increasing in difficulty—and danger. Now, with help from the mystical Queen's Council, Jasmine must assemble her own team of advisers, win the tournament, and uncover the mystery of her father’s last message, so she can prove to her people—and herself—that she deserves to rule Agrabah.

In this sweeping YA fantasy series, Disney’s Princesses grow up—and learn to rule—guided by the magical Queen’s Council. Now, Jasmine must prove that she is the rightful heir to the throne of Agrabah.

Briar Rose loves her life in the small Austrian town of Hausach, where she sings, dances, and runs wild through the woods with her best friend Frieda. But with her curse broken and Maleficent slain, Briar must leave her happy enclave to take her rightful place as Aurora, princess of Austria and betrothed of Prince Phillip of Lorraine.

She’s doing her best to come to terms with her new identity when the emperor of the Holy Roman Empire dies, and her father announces he will put his name forward for the position. While her days are a whirlwind of seismic change, her nights offer little respite. Mysterious dreams keep her tossing and turning, visions of queens throughout the ages, facing down conflict in their own nations. Then Bavaria launches an attack on Austria, killing King Stefan and setting up Matilda of Bavaria to become empress. To save the empire from a warmonger's rule, Aurora pledges to take the throne herself. She’ll have to compete against the top rulers from across the empire and learn to play their political games.

But there’s one more surprise in store. Hausach was home to more than one hidden princess, and Aurora must go head to head against her best friend to win the title of emperor, not just for herself but for all of Austria. This thrilling reimagining of Princess Aurora wakes her from her fairy tale slumber and places her against a real historical backdrop—with a Disney twist.

seems to be huge market for Disney princess novels aimed at the YA demo. So uh are we gonna get a book about Tiana dealing with Jim Crow laws? What really happened to Pocahontas? Aurora's kingdom dealing with the Black Death? :P

I'm actually intrigued by that description. Even though it's focused on B&tB rather a property I'm more attached to, I might give this a go. It sounds a little better than that villain book I read a while book (Part of Your World with the Ursula cover), but writing quality is hard to predict with these things.

This is such an interesting idea for a series. I think I will buy this book when it comes out.

But where will they go after Belle? BATB was always buttressed up against the French Revolution and I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that some fan fiction writers had already explored this concept.

In this book, the Beast's human form is named Lio and his title is The Prince of Aveyon. Also, the Beast has a cousin named Bastien and Belle's little town is called Plesance.
Belle and Lio have broken the spell that ensnared Lio and his castle, and they are now met with the onset of the French Revolution. If that is not enough, while attempting to balance duty, love and a mysterious magic, Belle is confronted with many personal – and political – twists and turns. An uneasy tension is borne of Belle and Lio’s happily ever after. Despite her marriage to the prince of Aveyon, Belle refuses to take a royal title. In her view, a crown will not help her kingdom – she can do just as much, if not more, for her people simply as Belle. She is also wary of Lio’s cousin, the self-assured yet enigmatic Bastien, duc de Vincennes. How far will Belle go to discover where she belongs while fighting for a voice for all those in her kingdom?

The second one will be written by Livia Blackburne and will center on Mulan. I wonder what the third princess will be?
From Publisher’s Weekly: Jocelyn Davies at Disney-Hyperion has signed Livia Blackburne to write the second book in The Queen’s Council, a YA historical fantasy series that reimagines the Disney Princesses as rulers coming into power, aided by a mysterious force that weaves between their individual stories. Blackburne will twist the story of Mulan: named Empress of a people who do not want her, forbidden from marrying the man she loves, and facing a potential coup, she brings mysticism to the battlefield to fight for her right to rule. Publication is set for fall 2021; Jim McCarthy at Dystel, Goderich & Bourret negotiated the deal for world rights.

It's too bad something like this wouldn't get made into a (short-lived) TV series on ABC. I think most people would find watching a riff on familiar characters like the Disney princesses in GoT-esque situations like revolutions, a Marie Antoinette-style overthrow, coup d'etat's, etc. interesting, but only as a trashy, dark take TV show they don't have to pay to see. :P
