I think this movie is going to be better than what is depicted in the trailers. My mantra is "trailers always lie" because they either depict stuff out of order in the movie or do completely throw out the real mood of the movie.I think when these clips stand alone by themselves they are less silly in nature than what the trailers show.

A fiery, fiesty, red-headed princess who wants to do what she wants to do is bothered by her parental figure and told she can't be who she wants to be, so she goes off to find a witch to change things.

Is it The Little Mermaid or Brave? Why, it's both!

A princess gets a bunch of suitors but she doesn't want to get married to any of them because she wants to be free.

Is this Belle or Jasmine or Merida? Why it's all three!

Oh Pixar...how original...

Actually, I wouldn't blame Pixar on this too much. First off, this is Brenda Chapman's story, so if the story feels too familiar, it is her fault :p . Second, the things you mentioned have been featured in MANY works of fiction, Disney included. These are very common archetypes found in literary terms such as the famous "Hero's journey" stories, like the rebellious princess, the friendly but ultimately useless sidekick, so on and so forth.

Third, I don't think Pixar is claiming this to be something original. The wildest they have claimed is that she is their first female LEAD character. The ones making a big deal out of this is the media and the Brave/Merida fangirls around Tumblr. The media because since Pixar had yet to do a story with a female lead character they had this sort of agenda to make Pixar out to be a male centric place, and thus when Merida came about it was a bigger deal than usual.

Then are the Merida/Brave fangirls who are worshipping this movie to the point of ridiculousness. They haven't seen the movie or know Merida's FULL story and have declared both to be the absolute best ever. Hell, these fangirls have gone as far as to belittle the other Disney Princesses (which we don't even know if she will be joining them) because Merida is, ironically, not like them...

I think you made a great point about Merida, she really does seem to be a mix of all the Disney Princesses. But I still insist there is more to her than what the media, the fangirls and even the trailers suggest. Yes, she does seem to have the same personal conflicts as the other Princesses did, but I think her story will be far more different in the end.

After all, we don't know much about Mordu, who is supposed tied with a curse a prince started decades ago in the story. I think that when Merida unleashes the curse on her family, it opens a whole can of worms the clan and the kingdom have been either trying to ignore or was unaware it existed.

In other words, what matters here is not the similarities but how the story handles these similarities and how it evolves the story.

Er . . I'm glad I don't follow the Brave fangirls on Tumblr. :p

I think it will be refreshing to see a proper mother/daughter relationship in a princess film. We have, what . . . Aurora, Mulan, and Rapunzel? Which don't really count since none of those relationships are actually explored.

Oh, and I like that there's no apparent love interest for a change. As wonderful as romance is, it's not the only type of story worthy of a princess . . . as we've seen with every other film involving one.

Hey,from what I have seen from spoilers of the movie is the fact that Brave might be the deconstruction of the rebellious princess archtype.Yes,I think that Pixar will deconstruct the usual story by showing the consequences of a person's actions by following their own desires without thinking about how it will affect others.I think its not going to be your typical Walt Disney era Princess or even the feminist princesses of the past decade.Of course she will be an action girl but at the same time her lack of a love interest and the lack a true villian will show something different from the other movies.

I think the mother/daughter relationship aspect of the movie does make it stand out when placed in with the other princess movie. Plus, it will also be a positive relationship unlike Cinderella, Snow White and Tangled.

In this case I think it will deal with a biological mother and daughter instead of a stepmother and stepdaughter situation.I think it would be good to also have a queen that is not villanous. In Tangled's case its an adoptive mother and adoptive daughter situation. But yeah I think Disney has been getting better at having princesses have mothers who are actually alive.I also think its fun having a princess whose conflict is not with her father and I love Fergus and Merida's relationship with each other. Those two are as thick as thieves and it really shows. :)

From those who have seen the film, the "I want my freedom" storyline is a tiny plot point compared to the real plot - the mother/daughter relationship. I don't think this is too guilty of being unoriginal.

Though not extensively explored, there was a definite relationship between Tiana and her mother. Which also revolved around her mother wanting her to settle down and get married, while Tiana wanted something else.

I really don't see why so many people are so hyped up for Brave,
The only thing I think I will enjoy in the film is Merida's relationship with her mother. I hate the marketing as the First Pixar Heroine and I hate the fact that Merida is essentially described as "brave" What about Mulan, Pocahontas and even Ariel and Rapunzel. They all fought for the things they loved. I don't see Merida's character as unique at all and I find some of the character animation not up to the Pixar quality they are know for.
Sure market her to the films accord, but I really hope they reconsider adding her to the lines up because It removes focus from some of the original members who are part of the WDAS legacy, Not Pixar's!

Though not extensively explored, there was a definite relationship between Tiana and her mother. Which also revolved around her mother wanting her to settle down and get married, while Tiana wanted something else.
That's right, I knew I was missing one! But in that case her father was dead. It seems one parent is typically missing or is not a major part of the relationship; it's not often both parents are alive by the end of the film.

Plus, part of me thinks a lot of the accusations of un-originality are mainly being voiced by people who don't like Pixar and will gladly bring them down over the smallest thing...

Or it could be either one of two things:

Cars 2...Not that i need to say anymore.

None of the characters in Brave are American and have that streetwise way of talking that so many other characters in the remaining Pixar movies have not to mention it's more of a straight-forward fairy tale instead of trying to have some quirky concepts. As much as I appreciate the other Pixar films, I am ready for a little more variety in their set of films.

I love Pixar and I love their stories and characters, so for you to say that is a bit OTT don't you think? I think BOTH WDAS and PIXAR are great studios!
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and my option is I don't think Brave has the "Pixar Magic" we've seen in Wall-e, Toy Story and even Cars.
