There's an interesting discussion about "Paperman" on Cartoon Brew.

Is that concept art? Or are those images from the short?

I love how grainy it is - like a newspaper. I'm guessing that newspapers somehow play into this short and thus the title "paperman"?

Those are concept images. The final look is similar - there is even some of that grain left - but the characters are much more defined.

They said this is the happiest they have been so far with the transition of VisDev to the final look on-screen.

I know he's just going based on file names, but I can say for certain that none of those images are from the final film.

The animation world is unprepared for how phenomenal Disney's Paperman short is. The second golden age of animation is now.

How interesting that Disney's critical comeback, which has been brewing since The Princess and the Frog, will come in the form this rather unexpected short.

With this insane buzz I cannot wait to catch a glimpse this fall.

I wonder if this short is very well-received (or, rather, more well-received than it already is pre-release  ), would Disney consider creating an entire film with the technique? It sounds really interesting, and I believe I would prefer it to plain 3D.

They already are. Musker and Clements' new film is going to utilize this CG/2D hybrid technique. It is currently in early development and multiple tests are being done.

For sure. This is the future of animation. At least, it's a massive step towards the idea that photorealism is not what animated films need to necessarily be shooting for. There is a ton of unexplored territory in the CG realm, and I think this busts the doors open to the idea of exploring it further.

Well, I'm not so sure about that. Perhaps artistically, certainly not commercially. I doubt it will be changing the nature of the industry like the introduction of CG animation did. That would require a series of blockbuster films created with this technique over a long period of time.
