Wild Disney character pairings, comparisons, etc.
Wild Disney character pairings, comparisons, etc.
Dear Disney Enthusiasts,
Does anybody else think about interesting Disney character pairings, and/ or does anybody else relate Disney movies to other movies?
NOTE: THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS FOR "SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS", "CINDERELLA", "THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME", "MAN OF LA MANCHA", AND "OTHELLO"!
* Awhile back, I began crushing on Doc, and I wondered why HE couldn't have been paired up with Snow White at the end of the movie. THEN I realized that GRUMPY was even cooler than Doc, and I began crushing on HIM, and I wondered why HE couldn't have been paired up with Snow White at the end of the movie. Of course, I plead guilty to also being somewhat influenced by Cascada songs, etc., when I was formulating my ideas!
* A few years ago, I re-watched "Cinderella", decided that The Grand Duke was totally hot, and wrote some notes about why HE deserved to be Cinderella's beloved! Again, I was also somewhat influenced by Cascada...and by an article that was written by a professor. I was actually able to discuss my ideas with her; I feel fortunate to have been able to communicate with her right before school started again...
* I am a Disney enthusiast AND a musical theatre enthusiast, and a Shakespeare enthusiast, so I wrote a few notes when I realized that "The Hunchback of Notre Dame", "Man of La Mancha" (1972), and "Othello" (1995) had total similarities to each other...I also kept calling Esmeralda "Aldonza" (?) by mistake...and vice versa (?) (I can't remember...), due to the similarities of the characters...
Both "THoND" and "MoLM" feature narrators. In both musicals, the male protagonist is an outcast, who gains SOME form of his ultimate dream by the end of the movie in which he stars; Quasimodo wants to be accepted, but his face scares people, and Don Quixote is labeled "Insane"...Quasimodo becomes the town hero, and Don Quixote, although driven to a tragic death, goes out believing that good will triumph. Both movies feature a dark-haired heroine, who is branded an easy woman, and who is desired both by the outcast (pure love), and by the villain (lustful, and sometimes violent desire); Esmeralda is branded a slut by Frollo, who will burn her unless he is allowed to dominate her, and Aldonza is a literal slut who wishes to better herself, but who is raped by her main "customer" right after she's begun to do so. Both leading ladies end up with guys other than the outcasts; Esmeralda becomes Phoebus' fiance, and Aldonza/ Dulcinea and Sancho end up with each other, even though they part ways...
The characters from "Othello" can be related to the characters from the other two movies, too. Othello is something of an "outsider" because he is labeled as "The Moor of Venice"; people respect him, but his position is precarious, because Iago is lurking, ready to ruin Othello's calm and cool status. Desdemona is portrayed as a dark-haired, young, innocent maiden, whom Iago falsely makes out to look like a total cheater. It's ultimately Othello who punishes Desdemona, but, of course, it's the villain, Iago, who puts into Othello's head the general idea that Desdemona is a "bad girl". Desdemona's ex boyfriend, Cassio, acts as a sort of Phoebus/ Sancho character, trying to figure everything out, trying to do what's right, etc. Of course, at the end of the play, Cassio has to mourn the loss of both Desdemona AND Othello!
Thank you in advance for your replies.

http://www.dvdizzy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9799Use Clear and Accurate Thread Titles
If asking a question, use a question mark in the title. Don't use an ellipsis as a suspense device. If discussing a specific topic, make sure the title is clear. If you're not a specific topic, there's probably an existing thread already discussing that topic. Don't forget to do a search first. Acronyms that are widely used are okay for posts, but as long as you have space for the proper name of something, that's probably the best route to take. You might know what "TLM" is, but someone else might not and might not care about a topic on The Little Mermaid. Save them the trouble of clicking the thread. Thread titles are supposed to accurately represent what the thread is about, not trick people into clicking.
Bad Thread Title: Guess what's comin' to DVD...
Good Thread Title: "The '90s Mickey Mouse Club is coming to DVD!
Hope this helps.

Re: Does anybody else think about...
I hate to be a downer as well, but I agree that the title needs editing, either by you or a mod. I hope I'm not being patronising, but it's simply not recommended to go making posts with vague titles on this forum. To quote Aaron in the Forum Guidelines Thread (with specific remarks highlighted in green):
EDIT: Darn, Sunny Wing beat me to quoting Aaron.
And to actually answer Jackoleen's questions:AwallaceUNC wrote:Use Clear and Accurate Thread Titles

I've most certainly never done the former. Yet I would say that it's easy to casually compare any film with other films, works of art and literature. After all, there was somebody who once said that there are only about four basic stories in the whole world.Jackoleen wrote:Dear Disney Enthusiasts,

I don't know if this is right or not, but I once said that every story comes from either the Bible, Shakespeare, Greek/Roman mythology or folk/fairy tales (accoding to How To Read Literature Like A Professor by Thomas Foster).Wonderlicious wrote:After all, there was somebody who once said that there are only about four basic stories in the whole world.
If that's not what you're talking about, then never mind
And, no I don't really like to pair characters with other characters that aren't in the same story. That just seems weird to me. I do like comparing stories and characters though. It's kind of fun sometimes.

Unless we're talking about pairing Belle with Jasmine, or Ariel with Aurora, or Esmeralda with Tiana, or...Super Aurora wrote:pairings are lame.
Okay, I'll stop now.
Jackoleen, I find it a bit disturbing you're crushing on an old dwarf. I dunno how old you are...? I mean, I used to crush on Gadget too (from Rescue Rangers), but I was, like, 5 years old at the time.

Maybe we could pair up Aurora with Cinderella? Then we would have Blonde on Blonde. (Any excuse to make a Dylan reference.)

That's like couple minute thing to fap over when you're in the mood. I'm talking about real bat-shit crazy devotion to these pairings, even starting "e-wars". Some are really....wrong.Goliath wrote:Unless we're talking about pairing Belle with Jasmine, or Ariel with Aurora, or Esmeralda with Tiana, or...Super Aurora wrote:pairings are lame.

The only pairing I'm really into at the moment is between Pinocchio and Alice.
There are several reasons why that I'll get into later, but the main one being that even in non-canon, Alice needs to be paired with someone closer to her age bracket than...the Mad Hatter. (Check DeviantArt for more details.)

I don't know about those pairings, but I've seen Ariel with Megara, Belle with Aurora and Esmeralda with Jasmine.Goliath wrote:Unless we're talking about pairing Belle with Jasmine, or Ariel with Aurora, or Esmeralda with Tiana, or...Super Aurora wrote:pairings are lame.

Look up an artist named X-Arielle. I for one only check out her gallery for her art style, not so much her subject matter.

I could've been a HEROINE?
Dear Disney Enthusiasts,
Doggone it all, SWillie! You mean that if I had used a more specific title, " could have saved a few seconds of your life?" You mean that I could've been a HEROINE just by using a different title? I shall forever cry for opportunities lost! What happens if I change the title NOW? Can I STILL be a heroine?
Super Aurora, I thought that you were much more adventurous than that! : You seemed to be totally individualistic...
What's so un-sexy about Grumpy, Goliath? Some animated older men look fairly super, fer shurr! Grumpy could certainly utilize his attitude... I could say more, but that'd be too much for the moral code, now, right?
I'm sorry, but I can barely help desiring certain characters, company mascots, etc. If there were an "Adult Board", I can guarrantee that you'd never hear the last of anything from several of us!
I have to give Walt Disney credit for NEVER ignoring sexuality! Sorry, but I HAD to say THAT, 'cause it's true.
Farewell, my beloved ellipsis. To quote Shakespeare, "parting is such sweet sorrow". I think that I read the rules, but that my love affair with the ellipsis was too good to move beyond. Sorry. <Fighting the desire to use the ellipsis once more>
As for Grumpy, he wasn't as much of a stereotype as his six companions. Doc was sort of sexy, but he ultimately made a fool of himself. Grumpy was the natural leader of the seven; he was grumpy, and yet he was sort of able to be seduced. There's nothing sexier than the challenge of seducing someone who is sort of take-charge and sexist. I can just imagine how his grumpy attitude could make for...never mind.
See, there are indeed times when a good, old-fashioned ellipsis must be used, although I herewith SWEAR to avoid partnering with the ellipsis again.
Thank you in advance for your replies.

Re: Does anybody else think about...
That's not quite what I was thinking, but it's pretty close and definitely along those lines, of course. It's basically saying that the themes of good stories are all very similar in nature.TheSequelOfDisney wrote:I don't know if this is right or not, but I once said that every story comes from either the Bible, Shakespeare, Greek/Roman mythology or folk/fairy tales (accoding to How To Read Literature Like A Professor by Thomas Foster).
If that's not what you're talking about, then never mind
To elaborate on what I said before (since I was trying to juggle a quick response pertaining to something I'd never do), I wouldn't say that I would deeply analyse and compare films with one another if I were just casually watching a film, but I would be able to seek out differences and similarities nonetheless. As an example, I did a class on German Expressionist cinema, and then watched Fantasia shortly thereafter, and could instantly tell of the influence of that genre upon certain parts of the film, even though I probably couldn't pad out a 2000-word essay on the topic. And of course, it's easy to compare so many Disney films to one another, since so many indulge in similar themes. Snow White and Sleeping Beauty, in particular, are very similar (wicked lady aspires to kill fair maiden, love awakens fair maiden and finishes her metaphorical into adulthood), as are The Jungle Book and Tarzan (the story of a feral boy/man and his encounters with civilization).
