Glen Keane Left Disney
Glen Keane Left Disney
A sad day in animation - Glen Keane has announced his official resignation from Disney.

A huge loss for Disney, and I really hope they fought for him to stay. It's unclear whether he will be working for another studio, as was rumored several months back, or whether this is more of a retirement, going to do his own stuff kind of thing.
Either way, I'm excited to see what he does next, and I wish him the very best. I'm happy I was able to meet him while he was still at Disney. He's truly been an inspiration to me.
I think everyone should take a minute and watch one of the scenes that he will always be remembered for - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xOVlVF3RJQc

That's awful. For me, the scene I always think of instantly in association with Glen is Ariel in her grotto singing "Part of That World".

I knew he'd been at Disney for a long time but I never realised it had been nearly forty years.
It's sad that he's resigned and he will deservedly always be known as a legend, not just in the history of the Walt Disney Company but also in the animation industry as a whole. I can't say I'm really surprised that he's left the company as there were rumours a few months ago that he was considering doing so and I'll be interested to see what he does next. I suppose there was a time when it was unthinkable to imagine animation at Disney without the Nine Old Men but a younger generation of animators like Keane stepped up to make their mark so hopefully there are some young animators at the company now looking to make that step up again to try and build on the legacy that Glen is leaving behind.

I wonder if its possible that he would try to start his own thing. However little it may be. I'm sure he could get other good animators behind him, too.. because he's Glen Keane. I know its very improbable.. but the idea of him possibly moving over to Dreamworks is pretty sad to me. Maybe he only wants to do freelance work, so he gets to decide what he works on, not Disney.
Either way, it is pretty sad news, and I wish him the best in all his future plans. I also hope Snow Queen won't suffer from his loss too much. I'm going to have to watch The Little Mermaid tonight.

Good for him I say. Disney hasn't been giving the man enough freedom and this is what happens when you don't take true advantage of your tallent, they leave.
I don't think he's retiring any time soon. I see him as someone who will keep doing it as long as he can, so long as he doesn't run into any major health problems.

I agree with Kyle. Cmon guys, he's not dead, he's just moving on to bigger and better things!
I'm psyched to see what he does with his newfound freedom, haha XD

Disney hasn't been giving him enough freedom? Could you explain?Kyle wrote:Good for him I say. Disney hasn't been giving the man enough freedom and this is what happens when you don't take true advantage of your tallent, they leave.

I feel like Glen Keane wouldn't want to work at Dreamworks. He did deep characters Beast and Tarzan so opposite of Dreamworks, as is the super classic, hand-drawn painterly-looking original more faithful version of Rapunzel he wanted to make. Which they wrecked and made un-Disney. Probably one reason he left.

I don't think we should jump to conclusions again about Glen going to Dreamworks until we hear something further. True, there were certainly rumors of it, and I wouldn't be surprised at all.
But I think it's just as likely that Glen is leaving to work on more personal projects, like Andreas Deja is currently doing.
Although the thought of Glen and Chris Sanders working together is very intriguing.

Tangled was not the the Rapunzel he had envisioned. Based on what Ived read, Disney thought he was taking far too long to lock down the look of the movie for one. He was doing some pretty revolutionary 3d stuff that the public has not seen for the most part. The word Painterly got thrown around a lot but the end result didn't really reflect that much. It was going to look different from your typical 3d animated film, more of a mixed media look (I'm talking dry brush, pencil, charcoal you name it really), further bridging the gap between hand drawn and 3d animation. One animation test shown featured outlines around the characters. Not just your typical cel shading either. The lines had a sketchy quality to them. He had several looks he was considering but in the end Disney decided for him more or less and went with the cheaper faster route.qindarka wrote:Disney hasn't been giving him enough freedom? Of course this is just one movie, one example. There are a lot of times where his ideas have been dumbed down over the years and I hope wherever he lands they do their best to give him the wheel.
Wow, Im really out of the loop aren't I? last time I checked I couldn't find any info what he was working on.Sotiris wrote:Are you talking about "The Croods"? That has been announced.Kyle wrote:Chris Sanders works at Dreamworks as well, right now he's on a movie that hasn't been announced.

There's absolutely no proof of Iger having anything to do with this.DisneyJedi wrote:I feel like I want to pin a full blame on Bob Iger for this by "abusing" his position, but I know it's not going to do anything for me but just piss me off even further, so I shall refrain from starting a blame game.
I am sad that Keane is leaving Disney but he's been giving good service for nearly 40 years and is departing on good terms. Lets not assume that this is due to any problem in Disney animation. And not to show any disrespect but lets not overstate Keane's importance either. He has had great service in the past, namely the late 80s and early 90s but the only movie he has been involved in recently was Tangled. Walt Disney Animation Studios will survive without him and no man is irreplacable.
Granted all this venting is not really directed at the posts here but I was rather irritated after reading comments on Cartoon Brew.
