Ranking the Remakes

Post by Disney's Divinity »

I thought for sure a thread like this already existed for the remakes, but couldn't find one. My personal ranking would be:

1. Aladdin
2. The Jungle Book
3. Beauty and the Beast
4. The Lion King
5. Maleficent
6. Alice in Wonderland
7. Mary Poppins Returns
8. Alice Through the Looking Glass
9. Dumbo
10. Cinderella
11. Maleficent: Mistress of Evil
12. Pete's Dragon
13. Oz the Great and Powerful ~ Rachel Weisz was the only good thing about this.
14. Mulan
15. Christopher Robin

I haven't seen the Lady and the Tramp re-make. For the record, the top five are the only ones I've bought on Blu-ray. If I ever see any of the others around $5, I might consider picking some of them up.

Vlad, I didn't realize you liked Aladdin (2019) the most over Beauty and the Beast (2017)!

Hi buddy, yeah, I did like Aladdin better, mainly because unlike Beauty and the Beast, it wasn't afraid to be more cartoony and didn't take itself too seriously. I would have put Cinderella on the second place if it were a musical. I felt it needed to have songs in order to be perfect.

Oh, ok, I gotcha buddy! I like serious stuff myself, and liked that Cinderella was straight, but that's my opinion.

Going off my memory, it has been a while since I've seen a lot of these. Only listing the ones I've watched:

1 - Cinderella
2 - Aladdin
3 - Beauty and the Beast
4 - 101 Dalmatians
5 - Mulan
6 - Jungle Book (1994)
7 - The Lion King
8 - The Jungle Book
9 - Maleficent
10 - Alice In Wonderland
11 - 102 Dalmatians
12 - Maleficent: Mistress of Evil

Eventually, I'll binge all of the ones made to get caught up.

Props to adamw92, rodrigo_ca, and Chernabog_Rocks for putting that revisionist trash Maleficent at the bottom where it belongs.

Aw Come on, mistress of evil does not deserve to be at the bottom as it’s Much better than more person one in Pretty much every way [The only thing maleficent one does better is having the pixies Look better special facts animation wise, coincidentally They are one of the main reasons why maleficent one is trash for they are the most annoying movie characters to ever [Dis]grace the screen; They are even more annoying than Jar Jar Binks, and I don’t even like Star Wars. Besides this factor, you could maybe argue the overall moral of the story, but since the actual movie is more than pretty much trash overall, even that Almost completely supersedes it]

I agree the CGI creatures from the first film were my least favorite part about it (well, besides the opening with child Maleficent). I think the only thing that stops the sequel from ranking higher than it is the winged creatures who are like Maleficent. That was probably the weakest part of the sequel, when Maleficent disappears off with them.

The sequel was just "eh" for me. Angelina Jolie was good, but I really don't care for Aurora's actress. The whole film gave me Mirror Mirror vibes.

I've actually never seen Mirror, Mirror all the way through. I don't hate Elle Fanning, she had chemistry with Jolie, although she admittedly looks nothing like Aurora should, so I can understand why she's not liked. I disliked Phillip's re-cast in the sequel myself.

Also, I had been thinking about posting before as an addendum to my first post that, while I only purposely sought out the first five, I'd get the rest of the list free via DisneyMovieInsiders if I had the chance (and have got Alice in Wonderland already). I'm a glutton for punishment apparently.

Except for Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, and Cinderella, all of which I've watched two or three times tops, I've seen each of the other remakes only once. Even the ones I liked I have no major interest in revisiting again, as I don't generally enjoy them and don't feel they add anything to my film-watching experience. After watching The Little Mermaid, this is how I'd rank them:

The Jungle Book (2016)
Pete's Dragon (2016)
Christopher Robin (2018)
Aladdin (2019)
The Little Mermaid (2023)
Mary Poppins Returns (2018)
Cruella (2021)
101 Dalmatians (1996)
The Sorcerer's Apprentice (2010)
Oz the Great and Powerful (2013)
Cinderella (2015)
Alice Through the Looking Glass (2016)
Beauty and the Beast (2017)
The Lion King (2019)
Mulan (2020)
Dumbo (2019)
Lady and the Tramp (2019)
The Nutcracker and the Four Realms (2018)
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (2019)
Peter Pan & Wendy (2023)
Alice in Wonderland (2010)
Maleficent (2014)
Pinocchio (2022)
102 Dalmatians (2000)

-- Good
1. Aladdin
2. The Little Mermaid
3. Beauty and the Beast
4. The Jungle Book
-- Okay
5. 101 Dalmatians
6. The Lion King
7. Pinocchio
8. Maleficent
-- Meh
9. Alice in Wonderland
10. Cruella
11. The Nutcracker and the Four Realms
12. Mary Poppins Returns
13. Maleficent: Mistress of Evil
14. Pete's Dragon
15. Peter Pan & Wendy
-- The rest
16. Dumbo
17. Oz the Great and Powerful
18. Cinderella
19. Alice Through the Looking Glass
20. Mulan
21. 102 Dalmatians
22. Lady and the Tramp
23. Christopher Robin
24. The Sorcerer's Apprentice

The first eight are the only ones I've bought (or will buy, whenever it's possible). Most of the others, I suppose I would get free through DisneyMovieInsiders if they're available and there's nothing else. I got Alice in Wonderland that way, but I did love HBC's Red Queen if nothing else. In regards to the old posts, I've since seen Mirror, Mirror. I don't see the similarity between it and Mistress of Evil though.

Only counting reimaginings of the animated canon, and only from the recent strain of remakes (Tim Burton's "Alice" and on). There are also some steep drops in quality between films, which I'll try to represent here.

PatchofBlue, you are hilarious! Pinocchio is right where it should be on your list, Haha! I agree with a lot of your whole list except I'd probably put Beauty and the Beast and Alice in Wonderland with the other top ones, just above Lady and the Tramp. I also think Peter Pan & Wendy is worth one watch.
