I thought of both of them actually :D but then, Narissa is just Susan Serandon acting like both the Evil Queen and Maleficent, so we've seen that already and Tilda Swinton as Jadis was also too similar. I really wanted Michelle Pfeifer to play Narissa and this would be even better! I love Michelle as a villain. Michelle Pfeifer did play the witch in Stardust however.

Aww, wish I said that!

She also played Eris from Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas. :P

am I the only one that doesnt want this to be made? The main reason i think maleficent is such an interesting villian is because shes so mysterious and we have to use our imagination to figure out her backstory. Why does everything nowadays have to have a backstory and be so in depth? Whatever happened to using your imagination? its a simple childrens fairytale and its a classic, it doesnt have to be elaborated upon, also Tim Burtons overrated and uses Depp as a crutch..

Whoever they cast, she needs to have elegance and grace and yet still be as a cold and calculating bitch. :D

I hope they find someone with a similar voice....her voice is so amazing! She can sound so sweet and loving as she tells you how she is going to kill you :D

You don't HAVE to take it into consideration as cannon with the fairytale or animated classic. This hopefully will not even be a remake (remember Planet of The Apes and Charlie and The Chocolate Factory?) but it's always nice to play around. As a Disney fan I expect you enjoy adaptations of classic literary works, Disney is very liberal when it comes to adaptations and it's very biased to only give them the benefit of the doubt. I'm in no way condoning this remake craze Hollywood is going through, but I would like to see this more as another adaptation. Tim Burton overrated? Yeah, every Hot Topic poser I meet considers him a genius for the fact that he gave them Jack Skelington, but just because he is overrated doesn't mean he isn't any good. I admit, I'm getting tired of "the dark alternative" he gives to movies, his ridiculously bad sets, or his collaboration crutches, but I do think he is a good director regardless of growing stale.

Now this doesn't have too much to do with this Maleficent movie, but if this project does indeed move past the rumor stage, it must mean that Disney is quite pleased with Tim's Alice in Wonderland which therefore means we should be very excited for March 5th.

Now about the movie. I think it sounds like an interesting idea, BUT I would much rather see Tim Burton tackle the story of Sleeping Beauty herself. I've said this many times before that I wish Disney would take all the big fairy tales and have big name directors do live-action adaptions of them. It could start a whole new trend and with today's technology we could have some amazing films.

*faints*

Oh.... This is more than I could hope for! This could be even better than Wicked! You know, sort of the same thing, but with Maleficent, who is cooler than Elphaba any day! Sure, without Eleanor Audley, it won't be nearly the same.... But even so, I am soooo looking forward to this!

Any theories as to what it could be about? I, for one, think it would be best if it would start with Maleficent's childhood... (do fairies in the Sleeping Beauty universe age? I wonder....) And I also wonder if she was once allied with the Three Good Fairies....

I always thought it would be interesting if, perhaps, Flora and Fauna were mentoring Maleficent and Merryweather at the same time, and they were rivals or something. (Yes, that's sounding an awful lot like Wicked, but it would be such an excellent idea, IMO).

Anyway.... No matter what happens in it, this is some of the most exciting news to come from Disney that I've heard in a little while (well, since hearing about The Snow Queen.... and really, this is even more exciting, I think!)

I find this movie to be pointless and uninteresting.

Disney already did this:

I'm surprised at you! You don't think he could pull off Prince Phillip? :P

I want Debbie Reynolds to be Flora. Unfortunately, I'm not knowledgable enough about actoresses to have one in mind who'd make a great Maleficent.

It's a little bit disturbing to me how they're marketing books like this to kids. Then again I've never read the books and I still dont get the marketing appeal behind Disney villians especially when you consider how evil and irredeemable nearly all of these villains are portrayed in the original Disney films they serve.

In all truth, I bet Prince Phillip and Princess Aurora aren't even in the film. Afterall, they were so young when Maleficent cursed Aurora. This is HER backstory, so we are going to see the three fairies and likely Aurora's parents. Show exactly what her relationship was to all of them and why it went to bad.

Not a fan of Tim Burton, so I can't say I'm really happy to hear this news. Sounds like crap. I thought Disney was done with Burton anyway, the fact that he seems to have come back doesn't make me too happy.

Ok, now that I've had my say let the "Guy who doesn't get all happy for Tim Burton" bashing commence!

I was so busy thinking "What's wrong with Depp being Phillip instead of Merryweather?", I forgot to consider this movie is just Maleficent's backstory.

I can see Aurora and Philip having minor roles in the movie. It seems they'd almost have to be there in some small capacity.

I've always dreamt of a Disney Sleeping Beauty live-action AND with Tim Burton directing it!!! Though I'm not a fan, I always thought he might be appropriate when seeing his first Batman film, with the gothic church tower at the end. Also, the darkness in his movies always made me think he could handle this movie because Sleeping Beauty has a slight dark touch to it; he could make Maleficent and the medieval setting incredible with his typical darkness!!!

I can't decide whether Debbie Reynolds should be Flora or Fauna myself - but I love the idea of her playing one of them anyway! Their casting would certainly be interesting - Maybe Betty White as a fairy?

Casting Maleficent however - now there's a task and a half. Does it HAVE to be a huge hollywood star? We need to look further afield than the pool of talent the media are constantly throwing in our faces.

Maleficent should be played by an established theatre actress - not necessarily a musical theatre actress, but a theatre actress with a dark rich voice and a true regal presence.

Ages ago, one of my roommates and I came up with Bea Arthur as Flora, Julie Hagerty as Fauna, and Kathy Najimy as Merriweather. Obviously, Bea Arthur is no longer a possibility, but I always thought she'd be great as a dry, bossy Flora. Julie Hagerty might be a bit young, but she has that sort of passive willingness that Fauna has. And I think we said Kathy Najmiy based pretty much on "Hocus Pocus"...

I always compared the Golden Girls to the three fairies. I would love love love to see Betty White as Fauna

Tim Burton's Maleficent?!

rs_milo_whatever, you don't appreciate actresses trying to be a litle different? All of those actresses woul have to change quite a bit from how they did those roles to be Maleficent. Nuance and detail. And even then, I bet those actresses would have to change a lot more than a little to be like the Maleficent. Narissa was supposed to remind us of past villains but still be her own character. Give actors a freaking chance to act different! Besides, part of the reason actors get their roles is because they are so great at certain things, be it regal villainy or what have you.

PrincePhillipFan said he once read that Maleficent was once part of King Stephen's court... I hope Tim Burton does as much research as possible to find out anything Maleficent's original creators intended for her backstory, whether it was hinted in the film or not.
