A+ in my book. The story is very detailed, and the characters have served their purpose very well. Most of the ideas in the movie to me are more dramatic and less comedic. However, there is plenty of action that really keeps the audience at the edge of their seat. Worked on me...sort of. Anyways, that Ghibli movie became the very first to me, to see that movie in theaters, instead of waiting for it to be released to DVD. After I saw the movie, I liked it. So, A+.

Amen to that but I wouldn't call Ponyo and the Cats Returns rubish though. I Just consider them below Studio Ghibli standards. I would rank Arrietty with the Cat Returns in my list of Ghibli films in terms of quality. From up on Poppy Hill looks like it could be a return to old school Ghibli greatness.

Me back in July wrote:Arrietty was a wonderful, entrancing film. The animation is top notch with beautiful shades of green and the innocent opposites-attract friendship between Arrietty and Sho was really well handled. I thought the ending was great, I could feel myself welling up. A worthy entry to the Studio Ghibli canon and certainly the best since Spirited Away
It's rather surprising that Disney didn't give this a qualifying run for the Oscars. It's the best animated film in several years and it would have had a great opportunity in this year's Pixar-empty category.

I don't think Arrietty was the best animated film last year but it certainly was stronger than the nominees that I watched so maybe it was a missed opportunity there.

I certainly can't think of a better one. Rango was unique but I wouldn't say that it's a better film than Arrietty.

After the recent attacks on Cars 2 and The Muppets by Fox, now they turn against The Secret World of Arrietty (and The Lorax)

All I can say is I am feeling quite vexed that Disney only is distributing the English dub of this film to theaters. As a result, they've lost my business on this one, and I sent them my negative feedback. I'll eagerly await its DVD release instead, though I was really looking forward to seeing it on the big screen. I wish Disney would learn to appeal to a wider fan base. Not everyone wants to see it in their own language; some of us want to view it in its original format (subs are preferable, of course).

I wonder if Disney can/will include the UK dub when this is released on home video in North America? Not sure if they even have that option. :?

Is this a good movie? I grew up reading and loving the Borrowers book series by Mary Norton (and still read them). The movie with John Goodman was an insult....so, I am hoping this has the charm of the books even if its not exactly like them. And I don't mind having it in my own language....I can't read subtitles that fast.

Judging by the way Disney Dumbed down the script in there Dub I doubt they are trying to market Arrietty to people that can read subtitles.

They can but they would have to pay to license it. I don't see Disney doing that because they didn't include the alternate English dubs of Laputa, Totoro, Kiki or Porco on DVD.

That's a good point. Oh well, I am still really looking forward to getting this on Blu-ray and I really, really hope Disney puts out a catalog title along with it!

If EzyDVD is correct, then it will be arriving in Australia on Blu-ray and DVD on 23 May 2012:

If Ponyo's release date is anything to go by, then New Zealand will get it about a month or so later.

That release date is quite depressing (too long to wait).

I would like to comment on the animation. Animation is more than just a drawing/caricature, it is how character moves that makes it feel real. The way Chihiro walks/runs with her arms up or when she puts on her shoes, she taps her toes before she takes off. In Arrietty, the way Shawn runs, you can really feel he is weak. The way the water slid bounces off the leaves. Bad animation is where characters don't feel alive...but these do. :)

I saw this one last night with a girl who really loves Ghibli. She was underwhelmed by it, saying it was cute but didn't go beyond cute like she expected.

I liked it a lot myself. Didn't really have any complaints.

No official release date has been announced yet, but the Amazon.com placeholder page has been updated with what I am assuming is official artwork:

I'm glad to see that Disney is sticking with the already established blue and gold Studio Ghibli collection cover/spine that they established with Ponyo and Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind.

I am really looking forward to this release and desperately hoping Disney releases a catalog title alongside it!

Thanks for the coverart. I didn't expect anything different from the poster art, which is nice. I'm glad they are sticking with the "Ghibli Collection" banner as well.. but the Japanese/Hong Kong "silhouette" covers look so much cooler.

I hope this gets a May release, but we'll probably see this one in June.. My only hope is that we don't get the 7-month wait Ponyo had. hrmm

Yeah, watch them stick with it for every title until there is one of two catalog titles left to release, and then totally change the entire thing.

Curse you and your uniformity issues, Disney.

Was the US dub any good? I'm typically a subtitles person but I thought the UK dub was actually rather good.

I'm surprised to see some negative comments here about Arrietty. I personally thought it was the best Ghibli film since Spirited Away and - at long last - they seem to have found a worthy successor to Takahata/Miyazaki. It was a tragedy that Yoshifumi Kondō only lived long enough to direct the terrific Whisper of the Heart.
