Disney Store Exculsive 17" Princess Dolls

Post by miklc »

Hi there, I've been a member here at UD for a while now however have posted very little, though I visit the site regulary to keep up with the latest news and read people's opinions on various subjects related to Disney (I'm Michael btw and I'm a complete Ariel freak!!!). Anyway I couldn't help noticing that people have been posting in various threads, snipets of information regarding the new Disney Store Exclusive Princess Dolls that are to be released seasonly to conincide with the release of the said film's Blu-Ray debut and DVD re-release, the first being Snow White of course, with Tiana star of The Princess and the Frog set to be the second in the collection, when the film gets it's Home Video Premiere, as stated by Goofystitch (who btw I know you don't know me, but just thought I'd say I love reading your posts and new updates very much :D !), who also posted a picture of the gorgeous Tiana in the thread The Princess and the Frog Discussion - Part II (http://www.ultimatedisney.com/forum/vie ... &start=840). Now I'm not a doll collector at all , I own a total of zero dolls  However for along time now I've wished to own something with each Disney Princess on (Generally I collect strictly Ariel items :) but all nine (soon to be ten) Disney Princesses have a special place in my heart (I already know from watching the clips released that I'm gonna love Tiana!)), I wasn't exactly sure what I wanted but I then begin to think that a doll of each princess would be cool, however they needed to be part of them same set so as not to look out of place from one another. Then I heard (from reading people's posts on here of course!) that Disney planned on releasing these Excluisve 17" Dolls of each princess and I got intrigued. I saw an image of the Snow White a few weeks ago and feel in love with it being such a detailed item if a little (OK alot!) pricey, and contemplated wether I should purchase her or not for a while. I then read from Goofystitch that all 5,000 dolls had sold out within their first week of release :o and I was overcome with a tinge of regret. Curiosly I made my way to the Disney Store site (I live in the UK), only to find that they still had the doll listed :D for £50 and unlike in the US there wasn't a requirement to pre-order the film in order to get the doll (I already have the DVD pre-ordered off Play.com, and will most likely be getting the Blu-Ray soon after the release to save for when a upgrade!), and so I purchased her much to my delight :D Payment has gone through for her, though I'm still expecting some email to say there has been some mistake and that they've already sold out of dolls! Anyway I thought it was time to make a sepearate thread to discuss this unique and truely wonderful collection which if all goes to plan I plan on collecting the set, for people to discuss their thoughts and opinions on them! I've heard that Belle is set to be third in the collection (which seems very likely) and that Rapunzel may be fourth in Spring of 2011 can anyone confirm this? What are other people's predictions for the other princesses? Apart from the two new princesses most of the other princess films are to be released in the new Diamond Collection , which accounts for their release. Now I know other DAC are likely to make the move to Blu very soon, but where does that leave Jasmine, Pocahontas and Mulan with regards to this collection? I think it would be unlikely if Jasmine was not included (being one of the main six), but for the other two Disney tends to "forget about them" when it comes to merchandise despite including them within the franchise so will they even be included (I hope so!)? Wow sorry for veeeerrrrrry long post (I babbly I know!), anyway guys I shall leave the discussion open to you's and look forward to hearing from people soon

Aww shucks! Thanks for the really nice compliment and it's great to meet you Michael. Hopefully you will start posting more regularly now. :goofy:
Now I'm not a doll collector at all , I own a total of zero dolls  However for along time now I've wished to own something with each Disney Princess on (Generally I collect strictly Ariel items :) but all nine (soon to be ten) Disney Princesses have a special place in my heart (I already know from watching the clips released that I'm gonna love Tiana!)), I wasn't exactly sure what I wanted but I then begin to think that a doll of each princess would be cool, however they needed to be part of them same set so as not to look out of place from one another. I saw an image of the Snow White a few weeks ago and feel in love with it being such a detailed item if a little (OK alot!) pricey, and contemplated wether I should purchase her or not for a while.
That was my situation as well. I'm not a doll collector by any means, but I thought this was so cool and if it turns out I didn't like them, I could always stop collecting and possibly make money on them years down the road.
HOORAY! I'm glad you were able to get one. I know it was a worldwide edition of 5,000, but I didn't know if they were still available elsewhere. Here in the US, the physical Disney Store's were allowed to sell 20 and the disneystore.com had an unspecified amount to sell. All of the dolls that were allowed to be sold in the US are already gone, but I'm so happy that you were able to get one!
Anyway I thought it was time to make a sepearate thread to discuss this unique and truely wonderful collection which if all goes to plan I plan on collecting the set, for people to discuss their thoughts and opinions on them!
That's a great idea. I received my Snow White in the mail a few weeks ago and she really is stunning. I'm committed to leaving them in their boxes, so pictures don't turn out so great, but here is my best effort.

I remember reading when the line was announced that it would include "all 8 princesses." I know that Pocahontas and Mulan are often included in the Disney Princess line, but I'm wondering if this collection strictly covers Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Tiana, and Rapunzel? I wish that Disney Store would release a full press release about them.

It kind of hurts my head to think about how long it's going to be until the set is complete. Sleeping Beauty isn't supposed to be rereleased until 2015, so if Disney Store sticks with only releasing each doll when the film is released, it's going to take 6 years to complete the set. If they stick to releasing them only with the film, then here is how I expect the line to pan out.

Tiana with The Princess and the Frog in Spring 2010
Belle with Beauty and the Beast Diamond Edition Spring 2010
Rapunzel with Rapunzel in Spring 2011
Jasmine with Aladdin Special Edition in Fall of 2011 (my own speculation)
Cinderella with Cinderella Diamond Edition in Fall 2012
Ariel with The Little Mermaid Diamond Edition in Fall 2013
Aurora with Sleeping Beauty Diamond Edition in Fall 2015

As you can see, there are some large gaps between dolls later in the series. So maybe Disney Store will add to the line to fill in the gaps? Perhaps Pocahontas, Mulan, and maybe even Giselle will be included so they aren't going a whole two years between dolls at the end. Or maybe Disney Store will abandon their strategy of only releasing them with the films?

The one that I am most excited for is Ariel, since The Little Mermaid is my second favorite Disney movie. I personally want to see her in mermaid form. I think there is a lot they could do with her fin to make it elegant, but they might take the easy way out and put her in the pink dress. I guess it will be a while before we find out.

I have the Snow White doll as well, and I love her. I was in the same position too, as far as wanting a nice collectible for the princess films. These dolls seem more like a fine collectible than a doll, so I don't feel bad about it lol.

I was thinking about the whole release cycle for these this morning, and I bet they'll add to the line. I think it would be very silly for the Disney Store to not release more to fill in the gaps. I bet they'll add Pocahontas, Mulan, and maybe even Meridia (if that's her name) from Pixar's The Bear and the Bow. They should release 2 a year anyway imo, since they are pretty much setting us up for that.

Ha ha thanks! I can't believe how fast they've sold in the US! It's been a while since I last visited my "local" Disney Store, so I'm not sure wether the doll was avalible to purchase physically instore (the last time I was there, Snow White merchandise was only just starting to "take over the store" in prep for the re-release  ), but I would make a prediction that due to fact that pre-ordering the film wasn't a requirment she's only avaliable online. This is probably why I was able to get her, because alot of people in the UK won't know about her seeing as there wasn't even advertisements for her on the site! (I'm really not a fan of the UK DS Site I much prefer the set up of the US one)
That's a great idea. I received my Snow White in the mail a few weeks ago and she really is stunning. I'm committed to leaving them in their boxes, so pictures don't turn out so great, but here is my best effort.
WOW! Thanks so much for sharing those pictures, she looks so beautiful. The box itself is also very attractive indeed! I know exactly where I'm putting her when she comes, on the top shelf in my bedroom. Lower down I have a shelf dedicated to Ariel and The Little Mermaid in general, but I think she would look a little out of place there. Gods knows where I'm going to put Tiana when and if I get her, I've practically got no room! I'm sure I will make room for her though :D

Hmm yes that would appear so, which is a shame because they would make stunning additions to this collection, particulary Mulan dressed in her matchmaker's finery! A full press release would be very nice indeed! I suppose there's still time for one isn't there? Though it would be a little strange t have one after the release of the first in the collection I suppose

I know it's gonna be a while!!! Those are intresting predictions and if the Diamond Collection follows in the footsteps of the Platinum's then I'd say your predicitions are highely probable, though the big gaps later on do seem to prove a problem so the addition of others can't be a bad idea now can it  Ariel is the one I'm most looking forward too aswell, seeing as The Little Mermaid is not only my all time favorite Disney movie of all time but my favorite movie of all time !!! Out of curiosity what's your first fav. if TLM ranks 2nd? Mary Poppins? I took a wild guess from looking at your avvy lol! As much a I like Ariel in her human attire for a collection such as this, I think it's pretty much essential she be in her mermaid form. She really would look truely elegant if done right! I also can't wait to see Cinderella (whom I hope is wearing her correct silver!), because her ballgown could look amazing if they really took inspiration from the film!

I agree I prefer to think of her as a collectable item than a doll

One addition to the collection that I would really not appreciate would be PIXAR's Merida, as much as I'm sure she will be a wonderful character and I'm looking forward to The Bear and the Bow very much I just don't think she fits in with the classic Disney Princesses at all, in the same way as say Tinkerbell doesn't

My favorite is actually Peter Pan. I think it's more for nostalgia than anything, since I was obsessed with it as a kid and went as Peter Pan for Halloween two years in a row. But The Little Mermaid had a really big impact on my childhood as well. It's the first film I remember seeing in theaters and I wore out both the cassette tape of the music and the first VHS from overuse.

I think that all of these are going to be exquisite, but you're right that Cinderella will probably end up being one of the best and I'm hoping that it borders more on the silver side as well. I'm pretty used to seeing her dress as blue, but I love it when it's silver, the way it's meant to be. I still think it's funny that since it looks blue in the moonlight, and since that is one of the most iconic moments of the film, that is how they make it in most merchandise.

You gotta love Peter Pan!! That's def. in my Top 10 Disney Movies of all time, I find it extremely nostalgic aswell there's just something about it that's truely special. Even from the opening credits the siloettes of Neverland's inhabitants i.e. the Indian's, The Mermaid's etc. and the music immeditaly transports me to childhood again :)

It really annoys me to no end when I see Cinderella merchandise and she's got blonde bombshell hair and a baby blue ballgown, I'm like that's not her colours!!! Though I made up my own little theory so as to satisfy my annoyance for this (prepare for this, your going to think I'm utterly crazy!), at the strike of 12 the spell was broken and so the ballgown seized to exist. Therefore the gown Cinderella is seen in the DP merchandise is a mere replica of the ballgown she wore to the Royal Ball, and baby blue was the nearest colour the royal dressmakers could find  Ha ha yep I'm defintely mental either that are extremely sad well erm... yer!!! And that's that

To defend myself a little... I agree that adding a Pixar Princess wouldn't feel right, if they want to continue doing 2 a year then she'd be a bot more of a logical choice than any of the other off-beat princesses. I would love them to do Kida, Meg, or Esmerelda though! All of them would be a fat chance though.

I bet they'll extend it with Pocahontas and Mulan eventually, but that would still leave at least 2 spots open. Granted Disney's animation slate is only occupied to 2012 or 2013 when King of the Elves is released. Maybe there are things in the works, and they are leaving space available for new princesses... that's completely speculation, but at some point they will make more princess films.

Another direction that would be awesome is if they take away the princess twist. Maybe they'll release Cruella Devile, The Blue Fairy, or Tink. A big female character from the films of the DE's. A Cruella doll would be awesome! (Maleficent would be even better though, My fav Disney film is Sleeping Beauty btw)

Over in the Snow White thread, someone posted a link to the Brazilian trailer for the Beauty and the Beast Diamond Edition, which states it as coming "Fall 2010." While the trailer is in Portuguese, the actual video is identical to the US version (its even in English), so Belle should actually be expected in Fall of 2010, not Spring, which is what a Disney Store representative originally told me. I'm assuming that because of this change, Aladdin will probably be released to Blu-Ray in 2014, which allows them to do 1 a year for the last 4 years of the series without adding anybody to the line.

And in regards to singerguy04's comment about there possibly being more animated films in the works with princesses that could be added, that sounds more than possible to me. We only know about what WDAS is working on for the next 3-4 years, but this series goes for the next 6. So if they make any more princess films, which I bet they will if Princess and the Frog and Rapunzel are huge money makers, then I would not be at all surprised to see the later years of this collection expanded to incorporate new characters.

CampbellzSoup wrote:

Technically no, because it comes with the Blu-Ray, which costs $25, and you also get a $10 Disney gift card, bringing it down to $65 for the doll. miklc said that in England, it costs 50 pounds and doesn't come with the Blu-Ray or coupon, which is about $69 dollars with the currency exchange.

I'm not a doll collector, but if you go to a place like Toys R Us that sells collectors dolls, $70-$100 is a pretty standard price and these are significantly larger and more detailed.

This was posted in the Princess and the Frog topic, but I thought it'd fit here as well. This is Tiana's doll.

I think she looks great, and I'm really excited to get this one. I know the film hasn't come out yet, but I don't see how it'll disappoint me.

Yes it is. I was at the D23 Expo and that is the doll they had on display. It is 17-inches tall and is the 2nd in the series. They even had it displayed directly across from the Snow White one and when I asked if that was it, they said yes and gave me all of the information about it.

Here is a bigger picture from the side.

In comparison, here is the regular doll.

I like the Tiana doll, but I feel there's too much gaudy detail on the Snow White doll - I hate how they do that with collector's items.

My only real complain for the Snow White doll is the huge heart gem necklace. It's a little ridiculous. Other than that, I'm glad they took some liberty with her. To me, she seems a lot more royal. It's very medieval.

The pendant and the collar are a bit much IMO. I'm not opposed to trying to make the outfits more than a simple transfer of animated clothes to real life clothes, but don't make it look like a Halloween costume.

Sorry then singerguy.

But I wonder why it doesn't match the Snow White doll at all?!

Except maybe in the thin arms.

That's what mostly bothers me. Snow White was a very thick-bodied young girl, now turned into something anorexic and stick-like.

Snow White came :) She truely is a beauty, however I was overcome by the size of her! I knew she was 17" but I was imagining her to be smaller and in the photos I had seen on her, she appeared smaller than I thought she was, she doesn't fit on any of my shelfs :o Anyway I just thought I''d let you guys know, she's defintaly worth the money I paid for her :P Goodness knows where I could put them if I start getting the rest of the of them! Oh and thanks for the other pics of the Tiana doll Goofystitch, it makes me want her even more, you can really see the level of detail on these when compared to the regular doll!
