No, by the removal of the sources of light.

It does not look natural anymore. The image is flattened out. Everything looks indoors. No matter what the colors are. They need to carefully look at these films again, and pay attention to the sources of light and overall atmosphere it creates.

And the sources of light are a product of? Oh, right... The colors chosen. Even you MUST understand this most basic of concepts.

Whatever you want to call it.

But the filmmakers did not intend for the opening sequence to look indoors so something went wrong.

It brings into question whether for Aladdin and TLK whether what we're seeing was the over-corrected for 35mm CAPS feed or a post-corrected version, or if they just found a more accurate color space to export it to film by that point and things were fairly similar.

Well, clearly you haven't been paying any attention, because the one on the left is warmer. Or are you really telling me that the BD looks warmer to you?

The BD looks like "looking through sunglasses", "colder", like there is a filter over the film. Indoors. That's the whole problem. The life, light and warmth is sucked out of the film. The restored film falls completely flat. Like a saturdaymorning cartoon.

So I hope you finally realize that a "darker color for the sky, or a layer over the film" does not mean more atmosphere/warmer. It means "colder". The warmth in a film comes from the illusion of the sources of (sun)light.

In the shot inside the bookshop, you're right that colors are colder. But the outside shots are warmer. There are more reds, more yellows - more warm colors. That's the version I prefer.

Regardless, the filmmakers have final say, and they approved the bd. Whether or not anyone prefers the older restoration is not relevant.

The upper right shot looks like it's through sunglasses too, and therefore "colder" in my opinion.
Also there are more reds in the left version, just look at the windows and the balcony. And the stones in the bridge are warmer.

But the problem is, that the outside scenes look like indoor scenes because of the removal of (sun) light, and I don't believe that the filmmakers could possibly want that. Why would they?

Because they feel that overall it looks better, as do I.

Just for curiosity's sake, I matched the BD side to the LD/VHS side as best I could (same exact settings for BD and 3D):

And why is "looking indoors" for an outdoors morning scene better to you?

Well, for one I don't think it looks like it's "inside". It still very much looks like it's outside to me. But more importantly, I'm looking at it in terms of the feeling it gives off. The BD gives off a warm, homey, "this is Belle's home" feeling to me, while the previous restoration doesn't really have any distinct feelings, or at least not as strong.

Ok, let's just agree to (strongly) disagree.
