Beauty & the Beast original colors - in upcoming platinu
Hello! My favourite Disney film of all time is Beauty and the beast but I was very dissapointed with the platinum edition release, which had substantially altered the original look of the film as it was shown in theaters with darker colours, shades etc. (and as it was on the original VHS release).
I saw in the net in reviews in Amazon that other people too are dissapointed with this. Does anyone know if we can expect the trully original version in the upcoming Platinum Edition in 2010?

I share your pain and sincerely hope they use the original original version. I've posted many times on this forum about my disgust in the IMAX rerelease. I'm actually going to post comparison images on here soon so that all the people who have such poor eye sight that they say they haven't noticed a difference will be proved wrong.

I asked my Magic 8 Ball and it said "All signs point to yes", so I think now we can definitely say the colors will be exactly what you think they should be! I'm updating wikipedia as we speak to reflect this.
"Ta ta ta taaaa! Look at me... I'm a snowman! I'm gonna go stand on someone's lawn if I don't get something to do around here pretty soon!"
please do!Beast_enchantment wrote:I share your pain and sincerely hope they use the original original version. I've posted many times on this forum about my disgust in the IMAX rerelease. When I first watched the Platinum, I really hated the change. Now, I still prefer the colors on the VHS, but I can kind of see the color changes at this point. The new, softer colors really have a "romantic" look and we do know that Disney believes brighter colors sells better with children. Too bad they wouldn't be considerate enough to have both versions of the movie in one release.
Listening to most often lately:
Ariana Grande ~ "we can't be friends (wait for your love)"
Ariana Grande ~ "imperfect for you"
Kacey Musgraves ~ "The Architect"

I felt it was more romantic under the darker settings, like "we can still find love despite our situtations". In the lighter one it's more like "hey, the worlds so bright and romantic, lets fall in love".Disney's Divinity wrote:When I first watched the Platinum, I really hated the change. There used to be one scene that used to freak me out. The one with the walking carriage talking away Maurice. On the VHS it used to be so mysterious and spider-like because you couldn't quite see what was going on. On the PE line it almost looks comical the way it walks. Small things like that really takes away ones movie-going experiences.
Here you can judge for yourselves and see what version you like:
Original version:

"restored" version with bright colors:

Here's the same screenshot to compare:

They've also trimmed the picture to fit better in widscreen TV.

It's called matting and was done to all of the CAPS features in their theatrical presentations. Taking the 1.66:1 image and slightly matting it to 1.85:1. The director's chose the matted version over the unmatted one for DVD release (same for Hunchback).filmmusic wrote:They've also trimmed the picture to fit better in widscreen TV.
Whether or not you agree with the practice is something else but don't say something that's not true.
Guys, you DO realize many films are artificially brightened for home video release, right? Most people don't watch their films in a dark room, they watch them in a brightly lit living room. The laserdisc and VHS from 1993 should in no way be used as a reference for the original look of Beauty and the Beast. If you want that original look when the Blu-Ray streets in 2010, just crank up your brightness and dial down your sharpness and your color, and you might get that good ol 1990 home video look.
I hope you realise this is not the same in any way!!Rudy Matt wrote:ust crank up your brightness and dial down your sharpness and your color, and you might get that good ol 1990 home video look.
for example if you reduce the brightness from the picture on the right I posted above, the skin of gaston will seem dark too. But the 2 screenshots have almost equal brightness in the skin.
this is not a matter that they just increased the brightness or something, but they changed completely the colors!
Sorry but English is not my native language. Trimmed doesn't mean cut? i meant they cut elements from the picture.. for example if the theatrical version was 100% , now we see the 80% of it.Flanger-Hanger wrote:It's called matting and was done to all of the CAPS features in their theatrical presentations. Don't you agree in the 2 screenshots of GAston that on the left we see all the head of the deer on the wall and the hair of GAston tpp, while on the right we see only half of it? and the same aplies for the bottom of the 2 pictures..
So, what am I missing? is it cut or not?
I don't know if they are the real colors or not , but they surely are the colors of the film as it was presented in the theaters where i first saw it. That version i first knew, and that is the version I love..Rudy Matt wrote:But you think the VHS and Laserdisc are the "real" colors. That's the problem here. Right -- 17 years later, and after countless viewings of the videotape, you can remember with absolute certainty the precise hues and look of the film as seen in the theater, and these are the true colors for the film, and you can state that your theater didn't have a waning or waxing bulb affecting the color temperature, etc. etc. .filmmusic wrote:I don't know if they are the real colors or not , but they surely are the colors of the film as it was presented in the theaters where i first saw it. Come on, man, even with my ego I couldn't make a claim like that. The only way you're going to see the "true color" is to print an IP of the original digital negative.
I'm not gonna argue about this and it's not a matter of ego. Surely you can see the difference between the 2 pictures. Do you think it was presented in theaters like in the 2nd bright version, and the VHS release was the altered one?Rudy Matt wrote:Right -- 17 years later, and after countless viewings of the videotape, you can remember with absolute certainty the precise hues and look of the film as seen in the theater, and these are the true colors for the film, and you can state that your theater didn't have a waning or waxing bulb affecting the color temperature, etc. etc. .filmmusic wrote: I don't know if they are the real colors or not , but they surely are the colors of the film as it was presented in the theaters where i first saw it. Anyway, i have a documentary on the making of Beauty and the Beast that it was broadcasted on TV, just a few days before its release on the theaters, and the look of the film in the extracts it had, was the one shown in theaters and the one that is on the first picture on the left, and the first video in youtube.
So, there's no argument about how it was on theaters..
Also to add to this, i have photos of the film in the magazines of that time, that have the same colors.
Sure you can tell the difference between the dark-brownish-red in gaston's outfit and the ridiculous red of fire in the restored version, can't you?
I'm saying again: I don't know and neither do i care how are the true colors of the original negatives etc. etc.. i want the colors of the film as I saw it on theater, which are the same with the VHS version, which are the same with the TV documentary, which are the same with the photo on the left of the comparison preview photo, which are the same with the first video on youtube etc. etc..The only way you're going to see the "true color" is to print an IP of the original digital negative.

God, this is bullsh*t! The DVD version is obviously "enhanced". Just watch the Jump 5 music video on disc two. The clips they use from the movie are exactly the same as the VHS and laserdisc editions, and i should know i own them both. If the colours were not at all altered then why does the movie's colours appear a hell of alot different from the clips used in the music video?
Some people just don't want to believe that disney would ruin one of their movies, but they did.
