Captain Nemo (Live-Action)

Post by Neal »

From 'Variety':
Disney has set McG to direct "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Captain Nemo," a family film that is being fast tracked by the studio.
McG, who most recently helmed "Terminator: Salvation," had multiple studios vying for his next slot. Sources said he will be paid $8 million against 7% of gross.

Sean Bailey ("Tron 2.0") is producing with McG's Wonderland Sound and Vision.

Scripted by Bill Marsilli, the film is an origin story of Nemo as he creates his warship, the Nautilus. The characters come from the Jules Verne novel.

The 1954 original "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" was the first live-action film made by Walt Disney, who famously bet his studio on a movie best remembered for the giant squid scene. It became the second-highest grossing film that year and won three Oscars. The film has also been the basis for various rides at the Disney theme park over the years.

Disney hopes to make the film this year.

Warner Bros. releases "Terminator: Salvation" on May 22. Though "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" is expected to be the next film he directs, McG is in discussions to supervise development and direct the next installment of "Terminator." He also will produce through his Wonderland Sound and Vision shingle.

I can't believe that paragraph was printed in Variety of all places. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea was HARDLY Walt Disney's first live-action feature film. It is sometimes infuriating to me that people so clearly ignorant of film history are allowed to write for film magazines or entertainment entities.

Maybe we should find this ignorant writer's address and e-mail him copies of Daily Variety's review of Treasure Island.

Treasure Island
By VARIETY STAFF

RKO/Walt Disney. Director Byron Haskin; Producer Perce Pearce; Screenplay Lawrence E. Watkin; Camera Freddie Young; Editor Alan Jaggs; Music Clifton Parker; Art Director Tom Morahan

Bobby Driscoll
Robert Newton
Basil Sydney
Walter Fitzgerald
Denis O'Dea
Finlay Currie

Treasure Island, Robert Louis Stevenson's classic, has been handsomely mounted by Walt Disney. Settings are sumptuous and a British cast headed by American moppet Bobby Driscoll faithfully recaptures the bloodthirsty 18th-century era when pirates vied for the supremacy of the seas. It was made in Britain with Disney and RKO frozen pounds.
Stevenson yarn revolves around a squire and a doctor who fit out a ship to search for South Seas treasure on the strength of a chart obtained from a dying pirate.

Robert Newton racks up a virtual tour de force as Long John Silver. Likewise, Driscoll smashes across with a vital portrayal of Jim Hawkins, the saloonkeeper's son who falls heir to a map leading the way to pirate treasure.

There's no dearth of action in the footage.

(Color) Available on VHS, DVD. Extract of a review from 1950. Running time: 96 MIN.

20K won 2 oscars, not 3.

I'm not liking this remake idea.

So, is this new movie not so much a remake as it is a prequel?

Oh, and you're giving up Narnia for retreads, Disney? Ugh.

I thought the exact same thing as soon as I started reading this thread. I rewatched TLTW&TW last night, and I almost started crying when I heard the score. I wanted to watch these kids grow up on screen like Harry Potter SO BAD. SHAME on Disney.

McG is a terrible hack (Charlie's Angels) - -but I hope they use the original Walt Disney era Nautilus design so we can get it back into the parks as an attraction via this remake (same goes for Swiss Family Robinson and the Treehouse).

I hope (for his sake) McG gains some credit with Terminator Salvation, it looks promising. I just don't know what to expect for a prequel to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea?

Ah - - I've seen now the word that it may be a prequel rather than remake. Not sure how McG will fit either task?

It's in the Variety advert in the OP. I don't think you can trust it, because of the many mistakes already in the article. But we'll see how it turns out.

Would the guy get a first name?!? I just can't stand it when someone uses a name like "McG" as his professional name (professional- it is not). Plus I haven't seen anything good the guys done, except I think he did a few episodes of Chuck, which is one of the best shows on right now, but I don't think he did much to make it his own, that's why it was good.

But with a beloved project like this, or anything that's based on something done in the Walt- era, the best man to oversee it would be the second coming of Walt- aka John Lasseter.

From Comingsoon.net today:

Who Does McG Want for Captain Nemo?
Source: Latino Review January 14, 2009

Latino Review talked to Terminator Salvation director McG, who let slip that he wants Will Smith to star in his just-announced 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Captain Nemo at Disney.

"The character Nemo in this film is more about obsession, he is obsessed and people tend to forget that when you become so obsessed you end up being the villain," McG told the site, adding "Man I'm trying to get Will Smith to do it, been trying to get a hold of him. I've been wanting to work with him for a long time already. That guy's great."

The film is an origin story of Nemo as he creates his warship, the Nautilus. The characters come from the Jules Verne novel.

Edited because my brain is fried today.

Production Weekly is stating that Dwayne Johnson is set to play in the 20K prequel. I take it they mean as Nemo. Unlike some, I actually think Johnson can actually act. I'm not saying he's Robert Deniro, but he can act. He was practically given the handover to being the action king by Arnold in his best film, "The Rundown." Ever since then he hasn't made as many good choices. If that film was his "Terminator" he hasn't yet made a justifiable follow-up to it. Of course, if he does do this film for Disney it'll be his third in a row... he's becoming quite the Disney Cast Member.

I don't really have any solid feeling on this choice should it turn out to be true. I do feel he looks the part far more than Will Smith would. As for the acting range? I don't know since I've yet to read the script and since it's being rewritten I don't think we know what to expect yet. It's an interesting choice if true and I'm going to be in a holding pattern till I hear more about it, the rest of the cast and most importantly, the script.

That writer mentions Will Smith because there was a rumor that Will Smith would be cast in the film.

I don't mind Dwayne Johnson, really... he's not an outstanding actor, but he's competent, and not some black hole sucking all the goodness from around him. It could be worse.

Of course, this also means the movie won't use my idea of a feminist twist, with Catherine Zeta Jones playing Captain Nema to Michael Douglas' Ned Land, also starring Lindsay Lohan as Nema's sassy first mate.
