The Disney Book Thread

Post by Wonderlicious »

This probably won't get more than three or four replies, but I just thought that it may be an idea to devote a thread to favourite, past and upcoming reference books on Disney animation or non-park Disney books (since there's a thread for that in the Theme Parks forum, not that they can't not be discussed here). I know that such reference books cost a bomb, thus the reason why I don't have quite a number which I quite want. But I personally still have quite a few.

Books that I have (updated November 14th 2010):
Disney War (okay, it's more of an exposé-cum-biography on Michael Eisner, but still worthy of note)
The Disney Films
The Art of Walt Disney (the concise edition...bought it in a discount bookshop a few years ago)
Disney's Art of Animation: From Mickey Mouse to Hercules (really my first introduction to Disney history)
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs: An Art in Its Making (miniature edition)
The Disney Poster (miniature edition again...I believe that they did an update of this some time ago...this version only goes up until Aladdin!)
The Art and Flair of Mary Blair
Paper Dreams
Disneyland Paris: De l'esquisse à la création (original French version of "Disneyland Paris: From Sketch to Reality")
The Disney that Never Was

Books that I want (if given an endless supply of cash, I'd get everything, but most of all):
<strike>The Disney that Never Was (bidding on a copy on E-Bay)</strike>
The Illusion of Life (they had this in our school library, until it mysteriously vanished)
The Disney Experience (believe that this was only released in the UK...looks mighty purty)
Walt Disney's Cinderella (the one with the Mary Blair artwork alongside a retelling)
Walt Disney and Europe (potentially interesting, what with my love of all things continental)
Disney Lost and Found
Walt Disney's Fantasia

As well as this, a Mary Blair illustrated version of Alice in Wonderland is coming soon (which I am most certainly going to buy at least somewhere along the line), as well as a book on Disney princes (as a way to help promote The Princess and the Frog most likely) and a book on Disney dogs (as a way to help promote Bolt most likely). Also, I noticed this book on Amazon:

Walt Disney Animation Studios: Story (Archive Series)

Anyone have more information about this? It seems fairly interesting, even if it could be possibly fluff for the most part.

I've got only a handfull of reference books:

-The Art of Walt Disney, from Mickey Mouse to Disneyland (ed. 1995)
- The Disney villain
- Before the Animation begins: Disney's inspirational sketch artists.
- Walt Disney, triumph of the American imagination by Neal Gabler.

That's all, unless I include Charles Solomon's History of Animation, but that one of course not merely deals with Disney.

In additon I've gathered many reviews and articles on animation.

Planning to buy:
-The animated man
- The neglected prince (don't recall the exact title right now, but I think you know what I mean)

And probably some more in the future.

Reiner, I have that Pierre Lambert 'Pinocchio' book; it's absolutely beautiful. Rather expensive, but worth it. 8) I haven't been able to get hold of the other two.

A selection of the ones I own (the rest have all been mentioned by others in the thread), with the best at the top of the list. In bold are a few you may not know about but should seek out if you can:

Allan, Robin. Walt Disney and Europe (the most informative book on the Disney films from Walt's era)

Barrier, Michael: Hollywood Cartoons (the second best, also covering the work of the likes of WB)

Hurter, Albert: He Drew as He Pleased (featuring the art of perhaps the greatest Disney artist of all time - an absolute treat)

Lambert, Pierre: Pinocchio (a beautiful book)

Canemaker, John: Before the Animation Begins (a wonderful art book, lots on the likes of Hurter, Tenggren, Blair and Earle)

Barrier, Michael: The Animated Man (the best biography of Walt Disney)

Carroll, Lewis and Sibley, Brian (afterword): Alice in Wonderland (illustrated with the inspirational sketches of one of my favorite Disney artists, David Hall. Sibley's afterword sets them in context)

Canemaker, John. Walt Disney’s Nine Old Men and the Art of Animation

Culhane, John. Walt Disney’s Fantasia

Thomas, Frank and Johnston, Ollie: The Illusion of Life (I'm sure everyone knows about this one)

Canemaker, John. Treasures of Disney Animation Art

Culhane, John. Fantasia 2000: Vision of Hope

Thomas, Frank and Johnston, Ollie: The Disney Villain

A response, how refreshing

I actually know them all and own about all you mentioned above
(check out the other pics in another topic, I believe I started a thread ages ago of '' disney imagery you'd like to share with others''),
I am still looking for The Disney Villain and He drew as he Pleased , too expensive for my taste at the moment.
Others you might fancy:
- The Disney Sketchbook series (check out amazon)
- Paper Dreams, John Canemaker
- Quintessential Disney (very nice pop-ups)

No disney, but must have!!!!!
-the art of Kung fu Panda
-the art of Open Season
-the art of Surf's Up
-The art of Anastasia
-The Prince of Egypt: a new vision in animation

Fantasia 2000 is simply gorgeous, as is Treasures of Disney Animation Art

You seem well informed,

happy treasure hunting :D

I've got a bunch of storybooks, but the only serious Disney book I have is "The Illusion of Life". It's not even an actual book - I found scans of it online.

Btw, amazing collection, Reinier  !

Well, I JUST found the list I made to contribute to this topic back in August. Now if I can only read my own scribbles.. :) So here goes:

Walt Disney, Bob Thomas
Walt Disney, Neal Gabler
The Real Walt Disney, Leonard Mosley
The Magic Kingdom, Steven Watts
Remembering Walt, Amy Booth Green
Inside the Dream, Kath and Rich Grand
The Story of Walt Disney, Diane Disney Miller (this was the first bio I ever read of Walt; it was in our school library)
Disney's World, Leonard Mosley
the infamous Walt Disney: America's Dark Prince, Marc Eliot
The Man Behind the Mouse (about Ub Iwerks)
The Disney Version, Richard Schickel
Disney A-Z, Dave Smith
The Wonderful World of Disney Television, Bill Cotter
The Disney That Never Was, Charles Solomon
The Disney Films, Leonard Maltin
Disney: the Ultimate Visual Guide, Russell Schroder (got this with the copy of Robin Hood I bought at Costco)
the original BIG coffee table book The Art of Walt Disney (with a big pop-out cardboard Mickey on the front), Christopher Finch
Disney Animation: the Illusion of Life, Frank Thomas & Ollie Johnston

And the Mouse Club books:
Walt, Mickey and Me, Paul Petersen
Of Mice and Mickey, Jeff Rovin
Forever Hold Your Banners High, Jerry Bowles
The Official Mickey Mouse Club Book, Lorraine Santoni

Also the Whitman books novelizations of Mary Poppins, The Aristocats, Spin and Marty, and Blackbeard's Ghost and the five Annette novels.

How IS The Animated Man? I have never seen it in any store and would have to order it online. Is it really the best bio of Disney compared to Gabler, etc?[/i]
