MMBoy Lion King 1 1/2 DVD Review!

Post by MickeyMouseboy »

Image

Hello everyone! To my surprise yesterday I got a early copy of Lion King 1 1/2 DVD. As I wasnt too excited when I first heared this was coming out. but when I have the case in my greasy paws well things changed  This movies comes enclosed in a slip case that opens up like a book, for those international members (::cough:: Loomis ::cough::) that are hooked on this kind of cases here's another to add to you collection. So......... I open the case to reveal the 2 discs! hehe so here's the review!

Story

You think you know this story? You don't know half of it! Timon & Pumba retell the story from their point of view. watching this movie will open your eyes to the truth behind the 1st movie and give you more insight hehe :) I liked this movie except........... the Meerkat song "Dig a Tunnel" this is the worst song in a animated sequel! let's just say this is a sequel song that wont be remembered very corny and the movie could have done without it! most of you might be asking how's the animation? well my answer to that is...... If Disney would ever want to release this as a theatrical feature they could pull it off since the animation matches the first movie. The backgrounds remain the same through out the movie the quality of them match the first in all it's glory. How about character design? well they all are very feature like there's a few instants where the animation on them drops when they fall into the secondary characters but timon & pumba stay the same throught the feature. I've also noticed that some scenes have been carried over from the first to some degree and by doing so I think made the rest of the movie match up to the good Disney animation quality this feature has. also there's a new rendition of the Circle of Life chant as the movie opens. Over all, this is a nice movie to own if you're a Lion King or Disney Fan.

Video

Presented in 1.66:1 Anamorphic Widescreen. The picture doesn't suffer from any artifacts or grain. Since this is a recent film and most likely it's a Digital Transfer. I was very suprised at the quality of the backgrounds and the animation will matches up to the Original.

Sound

5.1 DTS track - will review later
5.1 Dolby Digital - Very Active thru all channels!
5.1 French Dolby Digital - Parle Vous Francais?

Bonus Material

Disc 1

Deleted Scenes (11 min 45 sec) - We get treated to 7 deleted scenes w/ filmmakers intros/commetary. you have the option of Playing them all

Hidden Mickey Hunt (Feature Lenght) - There's 3 icons you have to become familiar with.

Open Door - Means that a mickey is about to appear in the following scene so keep you eyes open and press enter when located

Mickey Head - you found it!

Closed Door - The hidden Mickey is off sight

Disc 2

Featurettes

* Timon: Behind the Legend ( 4 min 4 sec) Hosted by Peter Graves. It's a Mockumentary of the History Channel's Behind the Legend show lol

* Before the Beginning: The Making of Lion King 1 1.2 ( 15 min) Filmmakers takes us behind the scenes in the making of this hilarious film! We meet the talented people that brought us this movie! :) MMB RECOMMENDED!

* "Grazing in the Grass" Music Video performed by Raven (3 min 12 sec) oh what torture! How this song fits into the movie.. we will never know. I have nothing against Raven believe me I like her T.V show but this song it's another Disney marketing pull to sell more DVDs to Raven Fans, Btweens, and soccer moms. the song is catch and at least better than what we gotten on other DVDs that's why I have to put this................. MMB AVOIDABLE!

Games & Activities

This is the part that everyone loves in the 2 disc DIsney DVDs!  well not really but here's what we get..

* Timon & Pumba's Virtual Safari 1.5 remember the under construction ride on the Lion King DVD? well this is the newly built safari! woo hoo. if you make the right turns you might get to the see It's a small world bug rip off lol this safari it's more like a story book feel unless you make the wrong turn and well things get out of hand! MMB RECOMMENDED

* Who Wants To Be King of The Jungle? Meredith Viera from Who Wants to be a Millionare. you get all the life lines you get in the show. you get asked questions about all 3 lion king movies!

* Find the Face *SPOILER ALERT!* (highlight to read)
this games brings the end of the movie and turns it into a game. try to indentify all the disney characters that crash into the dark theater to watch the movie.

The End!

MMB Thoughts

Well first time seen this movie most of you will be surprised and glad it turn out to be a good movie but after watching I liked it but have mixed feelings about it maybe because I have to accept this movie as part of the story  oh well. I recommend it to everyone! Start saving $$$ cause this movie is worth it!

Sounds like a cool set, although it looks like the second disc doesn't have a lot of stuff on it.

Regardless, the movie sounds fun as I expected, I can't resist 2-Discers (especially with a slip-case :P ), I'm a TLK fan, and I want the entire trilogy. So this is a must-buy for me.

Thanks very much for your review, Gus. :)

Thanks for the review! Sounds pretty good! :D

I'm glad it's getting a slipcover, because if it weren't then it would throw off all of my shelf coordination, and we don't want that, now do we? :P

Must........... have............. Lion King 1 1/2! I LOVE 2-disc DVDs! I don't usually buy the DTV sequels (except for Stitch! The Movie, I bought that one) but this one looks quite promising except for that Raven music video. But eh, what are you going to do?
Dragon, not lizard. I don't do that tongue thing.

Thanks, MMB.

I especially like the addition of the MMB RECOMMENDED! /MMB AVOIDABLE! method of rating. It makes life much easier for those of us who never read the entire review :P

Nice to hear the quality of the animation is so good, because I believe it was done largely about 20 minutes drive from where I'm standing now. The DTS track makes it very attractive, and although some of it is very fluffy, there are certainly a lot more features than on most DTV films, some of them sound quite good (deleted scenes, for example). Shame there is no commentary (as with Lady and the Tramp 2 - one of the better insights into DTV production), but you can't have it all (especially when half of the "classics" don't get them either!).

I just hope this is able to turn people around on the notion of hating all non-theatrical animated films from Disney. It certainly sounds as though there are a few people here who have reconsidered their decision to not buy.

I will certainly pick this up, but I am waiting for my "big Amazon order" to ship in March with Brother Bear...

MMB, I may not always agree with your reviews, but damn it all if you don't crack me up at least ONCE when reading them. In this week's installment there was this gem:
"Grazing in the Grass" Music Video performed by Raven (3 min 12 sec) oh what torture!"
" There's no Dumbass Vaccine " - Jimmy Buffett

I'm glad that I amuse you, Mr Indianapolis. Just wait till next issue
If I'm not mistake the next review should be "Winnie the Pooh: Springtime with Roo" to my dislike of Pooh- I can picture myself sitting there watching the movie hoping a big ugly cat would come and swallow me and put me out of misery. :P

I like the Elton/Tim new song for Timon I can't remember what it's called but it's a good sequel song. The score brings back original score from the 1st but also includes new one. over all the soundtrack it's great except for the "Digga Tunnel" I think Michael Eisner helped write it that's why it's so annoying! Teen Simba appear a whole chapter I believe in the Slug Slurping Draw ::plays the good, bad, ugly theme song:: :) Now you can get off your knees and stop begging my child! :D
