Re: Hand-Drawn Animation Dead at Disney

According to Brad Bird (and most people's experience), high quality animation done by hand in America, has been defined by Disney in such a degree that it is difficult for people to imagine this kind of animation done with the same budget and quality in other genres. And this limitation could be on...

Re: Hand-Drawn Animation Dead at Disney

That's not really true about getting what you start out with. You seem to be glazing over how much life gets lost upon clean up. No matter what the final animation is going to be lacking a certain energy present in the rough animation. So don't act like the whole masking stiffness is something excl...

Re: Moana

Is it just me or is Moana kind of chubby?

Is that some new kind of politically correct animation?

Re: Hand-Drawn Animation Dead at Disney

I agree, there is a stifness to CG character animation that I really can't stand. That animator hits the nail on the head. Making CG "somewhat" work, is a matter of masking things. CG character animation is mainly a matter of masking dead looking and stiff moving digital puppets (the maski...

Re: Disney's last politically incorrect movie?

"common" changes every 10 years. You should always see a film as a product of the time and situation it was made in, and not even necessarily as veracious. Being gay was something very different in the 20's than it is now. No reason to feel offended. Smoking was something very different in...

Films should per definition NOT be politically correct.

Can you explain what lame, inadequate dead-in-the-eye animation has to do with the kind of disc?

Re: Moana

Pity, it still doesn't have the organic feel that 2d character animation has. It still looks like rubber dolls moving in a strange kind of puppet-movement. The way the face moves, the way the eyes move, the disconnected/dead look in the eyes. It never seems to come really alive.

Re: Hand-Drawn Animation Dead at Disney

I'm not sure who made it, but it reminds me a lot of the style of the Wicked animation version concept/fan art: http://www.broadwayworld.com/article/Photo-Flash-WICKED-As-An-Animated-Film-20000101 Unfortunately if Disney would actually make that film it would look like this nowadays: http://umbridge...

Re: Hand-Drawn Animation Dead at Disney

I don't know if this has been posted yet, but what do you guys think of this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7X2m2WueNcU I love this design and animation, normal looking animated human beings. This clip actually makes me feel kind of emotional. Like they are on the right track again, compared to th...

Re: Hand-Drawn Animation Dead at Disney

It is the "tangible" quality that makes it look bad. What is the point of real-life hair in animation?
That makes it look like dolls. The illusion of great animation lies not in "tangible" materials. More in the opposite.

Re: Hand-Drawn Animation Dead at Disney

I think the characters in Frozen and Tangled look like bugs. Moving in slowmotion. I also think "tangibility" in animation is a bad thing. Animation should not look like real material. Then it ends up looking like Chucky from Child's Play (Rapunzel). To me it is still more like the "B...

Re: The Problem With Today's Disney Princesses

I do think that Disney has to keep in mind the era the film takes place in. For example, Tangled takes place in around 1800? When the plans of this film were made, I expected it to be a film with characters from around 1800 in behaviour, reactions, looks, speech, etc. They did this very well in Slee...

Re: Sleeping Beauty Diamond Edition Blu-ray - 2014

So I guess the shifted orchestra and voice parts are still present in "The gifts of beauty" and "Once upon a dream reprise"? I really wish they would have fixed this. The voices are about 1 second ahead of the instruments which really disturbs me.

Re: Maleficent (2014): Official Discussion

I didn't like the film, there was no tension or suspence whatsoever. Everybody was sweet for Aurora and wanted to help her. It was cute but boring. What I like about the original story is the rivalry between maleficent and prince Philip, she does everything to keep him away from the castle. That who...

Frozen is on the brink of passing BATB and Aladdin and being having the second highest domestic gross for WDAS of all time :o :D 12. Beauty and the Beast - $218,967,620 13. Aladdin - $217,350,219 14. Frozen - $210,412,773 This "domestic gross" list has always intrigued me, because the gro...
