Sleeping Beauty at the El Capitan

I went back and forth on if I should start a separate thread for this, but since there was a mix of straight "movie news" as well as issues pertaining to the DVD release, I put up a new topic. Whoever wields supreme power around here, feel free to fold this in with the appropriate topic if...

Ollie Johnston, 1912-2008

Haven't seen the news posted anywhere except on Jim Hill Media, but Ollie Johnston passed away today at the age of 95.

Jim Hill on Ollie's legacy.

Thoughts and prayers to the Johnston family.[/url]

Disney Unveils Animation Slate

From today's "Variety": Marking the second anni of the merger of Pixar and Disney, animation prexy John Lasseter hosted a star-studded, three-hour tour of the next four years of Mouse House toons Tuesday at NYU. Before a media-heavy audience that also included Disney chief exec Bob Iger, L...

Does anyone know yet if Sleeping Beauty PE will be the correct 2.20:1 aspect ratio, or the false one of 2.35:1 that they did for the SE?
The specs at DisneyDVD.com say the AR will be 2.55:1; take that for what it's worth.

Fun article on Disney-loving Stanford basketball players

Non-sports fans out there may have no clue who these guys are, but a really fun and interesting read from this week's edition of Sports Illustrated. Here are a pair of sure-bet NBA players dishing out on Disney trivia, computer animation vs. 2D, and their ambition to one day have their own cartoon e...

From an interview Dick Cook gave in November 07: Box Office Mojo: Will you omit Pinocchio smoking in future releases? Dick Cook: No. We're not taking away from anything that's already been done. We're not taking smoking away from Cruella in 101 Dalmatians—that's just a part of it and that's history....

IN MEDIA RES: What's the Best Disney Opening?

This Latin phrase summarizes where to start your story. It literally means "in the middle." Think of the metaphor of diving off a quarry's edge deep, deep into your story. What's the best opening sequence for a Disney film? After listening to Bells of Notre Dame, a fantastic opening seque...

Captain Jack is Back July 7th

It looks pretty cool, I must admit - one can never tell with a sequel, but it looks like they're doing everything they can to make this one even better.

Walt in His Own Words...On Sequels

Regardless of your opinion on the Disney movement to produce animated DTV sequels, Walt's disfavor of them with regard to the animated classics is well-known. Today, Jim Hill Media writer Wade Sampson profiles one of Walt's final public speeches in October 1966, to the National Association of Theatr...

It's always an interesting question, how would Walt himself have responded to CG-animation? He would have embraced it, in my opinion. Disney was constantly seeking to be on the cutting edge of the film industry, pushing the developments of new technology and innovation in the style of animation, whe...

Steve Jobs, bless him, is really out on a limb with the distribution deal he's looking for. Basically he wants the Lucas deal, where Pixar pays a flat fee to a studio to distribute the film while keeping essentially all profit. Two things make this highly improabable to get: 1) Financing of the film...

Did you just vote for your favorite song? Buy it on iTunes

A huge portion of the Walt Disney Records catalog was posted today for legal download (.99 cents/song, 9.99 per album) exculsively at Apple's iTunes Music Store. I myself downloaded "Time of Your Life", Randy Newman's end theme from A BUG'S LIFE, and "Court of Miracles" from HUNC...

It was nominated for Best Original Screenplay.

I know I will get some hate mail for this, but I think it is one of the more overrated Disney films. It is a very good film, but it wouldn't make my top 5, so to speak.

That should be the way it works - an initial nomination process and then a second vote based on the top vote-getters. While you are correct that it can sometimes be very hard to compare films from different eras, the same argument could be made about how the Top Film countdowns went. There were a fe...

I agree. I posted this secretly hoping it could be the next vote thing, third in the series after the Top Animated and Top Live-Action films. PS - Obviously the general rule of them is five actors per category, and of course there are more than five great performances in each situation. Both Geoffre...

The All-Time, All-Disney Academy Awards

With the annual "Rich People Giving Each Other Awards" Festival known as the Oscars behind us, I got to thinking about what films might dominate an All-Disney version of the awards. It intrigued me in the same way the Top Films Countdowns have on the UltimateDisney website. Here were my no...

Johnny Depp wins SAG Award

A huge upset, in the eyes of official Hollywood. Most have pegged Bill Murray and Sean Penn as the favorites for the Oscar, but actors make up the bigges block of Academy voters and Depp is truly showing that he's "the people's champion". Could Jack Sparrow actually take home the Oscar?

Or I could just be wrong. Maybe it's like you say, the NY Times has assisted in putting words in his mouth. Why is it so unfair to actually ask where Roy Disney was when this "10-year drain of talent and energy" was happening? Lemme write it in capital letters since, apparently, anything less that unconditional support of Roy Disney brands you as a traitor to the cause around here: IT IS NOT THA...
