1. Beauty and the Beast (1991)

"It was one of the first movies I ever saw in theaters, and I've been dazzled by it my whole life. Every time I watch it, without fail, I find myself laughing and shedding tears. I'm reminded of the magical time when I was a little boy, before my family was splintered, and the world was so different. At the end of it, I almost feel renewed and refreshed. For me, this film isn't something I just watch - it's something I delve into emotionally. In essence, it achieves everything a movie should be and is tied with another as my favorite film of all time. Beauty and the Beast is a very special piece of my life that I hold dear, and my true feelings for it are beyond words."

"When Disney first started animated films, particularly with its opening trio of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, and Fantasia, the point was literally to change the way film exists, particularly in a medium such as animation which is generally regared as kiddie fluff with little real cinematic value. They succeeded. Watching the early films, with the moveable images, the wonderful swirl of imagination and music, creates a whole new way of experiencing the story.

The later Disney features were a little more formulaic, but still outstanding: they found a story, ran with it, and focused on loveable characters with witty voices. Films like Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, Lady and the Tramp, were all more like elegant pieces of pop art than real challenging stuff.

Beauty and the Beast re-wrote the rules. The camera flows effortlessly in and out and around a scene, creating a visual, Spielberg-ian way of telling the story. Then you need a compelling cast of vocal talent, worked together flawlessly with charming music. Check off all of the above for this film.

It really was a return to glory for Disney, a film that touched audiences on multiple levels. It had as genuine a heart and message as any film release in 1991, and deserved to stand up there as one of the five best pictures of the year."

"Beauty and the Beast was the peak of Disney's third golden age, and certainly one of the highest points in the history of animation. The directors Kirk Wise and Gary Trousdale, along with their team of artists, were able to get all the best elements from the most beloved Disney fairy-tale movies and adapt them to the contemporary audience of moviegoers. Because of that, the film features the most strong animated heroine that had ever appeared on screen, the most complex of all Disney protagonists, and the most incredible songs and music that can put any Broadway musical to shame. When Beauty and the Beast was released, the audience knew it was something very special and not just a mere cartoon - it was one of the best films of the year, and it still is one of the best films of all time.""

""I first saw Beauty on a date. I had considered myself well past Disney fare at 19, but my date insisted. I was shocked -- Beauty and the Beast allowed me to rediscover the magic of Disney: a beautiful heroine, the heroic outcast, an arrogent villain. Who could ask for a better film?""
