We have something exciting for U.S. site visitors today - a free month of DVD rentals from Mentura. Mentura rents out educational and family DVDs - they're still growing, but they have over 100 Disney movies to choose from. Make a list of the title that interest you - they'll mail you 3 at a time (or more or less, based on what plan you choose). There's no due dates - watch them when you get a chance, then send them back by dropping off the pre-paid postage in any mailbox. When they receive it, they'll automatically send out the next available DVD on your list. There's no limit to the number of DVDs you rent from them. I've tried them out, and I must say I'm most pleased with their customer service and their turnaround times. Try it free for a month and see how you like it!
October 27, 2003 - Just in time for Halloween, we have a thorough movie and DVD review of Disney's 11th animated film - The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad.
October 26, 2003 - We've put together a list of the Disney DVDs most-purchased through this site for the year 2003 - some interesting results as to what Disney collectors are most drawn to. Check out the list.
October 25, 2003 - Two new DVD reviews - the animated anthology feature Melody Time and The Mighty Ducks.
October 22, 2003 - Added large cover art for January 6's DVDs: Mickey & Minnie's Sweetheart Stories and Winnie the Pooh: Un-Valentine's Day & A Valentine For You. Upcoming Cover Art.
October 19, 2003 - Here's our DVD review of The Apple Dumpling Gang: Special Edition.
In case you've been putting off buying the Anchor Bay DVD releases of Disney movies, you may want to pick up a few while you can. Apparently, all of Anchor Bay's DVDs for Disney movies are being discontinued. Disney will be re-packaging some of these next year - The Great Locomotive Chase, Midnight Madness, and Return to Oz have all been announced and are up for pre-order for early 2004. It's not yet clear if Disney will simply be repackaging the Anchor Bay DVDs, or not.
Others which have not been announced, like The Devil and Max Devlin, The Last Flight of Noah's Ark, The Littlest Horse Thieves, The North Avenue Irregulars, The Watcher in the Woods, Unidentified Flying Oddball, The Black Hole, and The Cat from Outer Space, are all no longer available to buy new from Amazon or anywhere else once stock runs out. Ideally, Disney will be re-issuing all of these late '70s, early '80s films in new anamorphic discs, with extra features...but somehow I strongly doubt it.
October 18, 2003 - From 151 contest entries, 74 were able to correctly identify 12 or more movies from our DVD Giveaway Screencap Challenge. The Answers are now up; the randomly-selected winner is Catherine from Quebec, who selected Fantasia as her prize. A wise choice, with it going out of print early next year. Congratulations to Catherine, and thanks to all who played. Check back November 1 to enter our next DVD Giveaway!
October 17, 2003 - Now up: a 2-page photo preview of Lilo & Stitch's Island of Adventures. As promised...a new DVD review - Pete's Dragon. Reviews of The Mighty Ducks and The Apple Dumpling Gang (Special Edition) will hopefully go up this weekend.
An update on Disney's 1995 animators documentary Frank and Ollie...although it was released on October 7 as a Disney exclusive, you won't have to go out of your way to get a copy, you'll just have to wait. It's now up for pre-order (in addition to Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome) on Amazon.com.
The film, on longtime Disney animators Frank "The Big Hurt" Thomas and Ollie Johnston, is supplemented by bonus features including "Making The Movie", "Frank & Ollie's Personal Home Movies", "Priceless Outtakes With Gems Featuring Walt Disney And Glen Keane", Ollie And His Backyard Trains, Rare Performance with Frank And The Firehouse 5 + 2 From "Jazz Scene USA", Frank & Ollie's Debut Scenes: "The Brave Little Tailor" and "Mickey's Elephant", Exploration Of Art With Expert Commentary, Storyboards, Pencil Sketches, Character Studies and more.
Also newly available for pre-order are two January 6 DVD debuts of video releases from last decade: Winnie the Pooh: Un-Valentine's Day & A Valentine For You and Mickey and Minnie: Sweetheart Stories (cover art below).
October 16, 2003 - How about this...the first look at artwork for Alice in Wonderland: The Masterpiece Edition! The cover resembles this fall's releases of Sleeping Beauty and The Lion King and seems to be promoting more than anything else the Virtual Wonderland Party. Also, important to note that it will only be available for a limited time. How limited? Don't know yet. It streets January 27, 2004:
Alice in Wonderland: The Masterpiece Edition is now up for pre-order at Amazon.com and DVD Empire.
Posted the Freaky Friday press release.
And a final reminder that 11:59 PM Eastern this Friday is your last chance to enter our DVD Giveaway Contest. Contest #3 will actually begin November 1 and will run through the 15th, despite what was previously anticipated. Check back for details on 11/1 (that's 1/11 for those of you who write dates differently).
October 12, 2003 - Other DVD sites may have gotten early copies of The Lion King DVD to review; we didn't. But we still bring you a detailed review of last week's 2-disc set that provides more of a critical analysis at a DVD that feels heavy on promotion and light on substance.
