UltimateDisney.com: The Ultimate Guide to Disney DVD
OCTOBER 1-15, 2003: NEWS ARCHIVES
October 14, 2003 - We've updated the 2003 Holiday Gift Guide with preview pages of Finding Nemo, Pirates of the Caribbean, Freaky Friday.
Some more details on Freaky Friday have surfaced. The disc, streeting December 16, will contain both widescreen and fullscreen versions of the film, plus an alternate ending, deleted scenes, "comical bloopers", music videos, "and more." Pre-order.
October 13, 2003 - Here's a new shot from The Lion King 1 1/2...
October 12, 2003 - Other DVD sites may have gotten early copies of The Lion King DVD to review; we didn't. But we still bring you a detailed review of last week's 2-disc set that provides more of a critical analysis at a DVD that feels heavy on promotion and light on substance. The Lion King: Platinum Edition DVD Review
We also bring you a look at the 5-step progression of the "Turtle Dive" scene from next month's Finding Nemo DVD:
Finally, we've updated the Pan & Scan DVDs to Avoid List to note some additional widescreen DVDs of live action films being released abroad, including First Kid, Cheetah, The Journey of Natty Gann, and Man of the House. The International Exclusives list has been updated to note some Disney movies only available on DVD in Germany: Rocketman, Benji the Hunted, and In Search of the Castaways. Recently released International exclusives includes Fox's UK DVD of Flight of the Navigator and the Whoopi Goldberg Wonderful World of Disney TV movie A Knight in Camelot in the Netherlands.
October 9, 2003 - We don't do midnight updates very often, but this is good and shouldn't wait...
Alice in Wonderland: 2-Disc Masterpiece Edition Special Edition
(it's not really clear why it has two names, but until we know which name is taking precedence, we'll be redundant, too)
1.33:1 Original Aspect Ratio, Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround, French & Spanish Tracks
Disc 1 - Virtual Wonderland Party, "The Unbirthday Song" Sing-Along Song, "All in the Golden Afternoon" Sing-Along Song, "Adventures in Wonderland" Set-Top Game, Unused song - "I'm Odd", Animated Short - "Through the Mirror" (1936)
Disc 2 - "One Hour in Wonderland" Special, An Alice Comedy: Alice's Wonderland, Theatrical Trailers (hurray - they're including them!), Walt Disney Introductions (1954 and 1964), "Operation Wonderland" (which was on the Gold Collection DVD, as well), "The Fred Waring Show", Abandoned Content: "From Wonderland to Neverland", Deleted Storyboard Concept: "Alice Daydreams in the Park", Song Demos: "Beware the Jabberwock", "Everything Has a Useness", "So They Say", "Beautiful Soup", "Dream Caravan", "If You'll Believe in Me", Art Galleries "and more."
Release date, as stated several times before, is January 27, 2004. The 2-disc reissues of Pocahontas and Lilo & Stitch will be coming later in 2004.
While it still seems they're trying to appease folks who like games and sing-alongs, this release definitely seems to put more focus on content of substance. While most (if not all) of the laserdisc goodies will be ported over, it apparently will not have an Audio Commentary, unless Disney is hiding that, like they did for Sleeping Beauty and The Lion King. Of course, all of this is subject to change, as always. If it doesn't, there seems to be no reason at all to hold on to the Gold Collection disc.
October 8, 2003 - The Lion King 1 1/2, premiering on Disney DVD on February 10, 2004, has been confirmed as a 2-disc Special Edition, a first for a direct-to-video feature. You can now pre-order The Lion King 1 1/2 DVD from Amazon.com for 30% off.
October 5, 2003 - Three detailed, new DVD reviews come your way today: Fun and Fancy Free, Winnie the Pooh: A Very Merry Pooh Year, and Recess: School's Out.
But even three new DVD reviews may pale in comparison with the release of our brand new DVD+ Product Search, which in association with Amazon's United States, United Kingdom, French, and German sites, allows you to search for Disney DVDs, soundtracks, books, games, and toys from all over the world. I think you'll find it flexible and useful. You can browse all the products for a particular movie (or movie franchise), all the DVDs from a particular line ("Vault Disney", "Gold Collection", etc.), movies matching a particular decade, genre ("Animated Classics", "Live Action", "Direct-to-Video", etc.) or popular Disney actor.
This took a lot of work and quite a bit of time...and it's still somewhat in-progress. Although fully functional now, more additions and enhancements will be occurring over the next few weeks, and of course, new titles will always be added as they're announced. I hope you'll find it useful. And of course, all purchases made through this Product Search support UltimateDisney.com. We'd love to hear feedback - whether you have suggestions, comments, or problems. You can use the Feedback Forum or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org. Check out the DVD+ Product Search!
October 4, 2003 - The February-May 2004 catalogue slate we revealed last weekend is now up for pre-order at Amazon.com. The complete Upcoming Releases Schedule has been updated, with the links. Alternatively, I've created a page with Disney's descriptions of all the titles, as well. Check that out here.
October 1, 2003 - The live action catalogue titles slated for early next year were confirmed today. Alice in Wonderland: Masterpiece Edition is officially slated for January 27, 2004; while the release dates for the 2-disc Pocahontas and Lilo & Stitch releases are still up in the air.
