June 16, 2009 - Friday the 13th: Killer Cut DVD Review

June 15, 2009 - Part sequel, part remake, 2009's Friday the 13th relaunches the 29-year-old horror film series
that associates hockey-masked killer Jason and endangered young people with the unlucky day. This installment follows a wild group of vacationers into the Camp Crystal Lake area, where -- spoiler warning! -- they're terrorized one-by-one by a silent slasher. Read our review of New Line's Killer Cut. Available tomorrow, the R-rated DVD extends the film's theatrical cut by 9 minutes and adds deleted/alternate scenes and the featurette "The Rebirth of Jason Voorhees." More...

June 14, 2009 - You might think it's been somewhat of a slow year for Disney DVD, but then you probably don't know about the various releases from Disney Educational Products. Our latest review covers six recent DVDs intended for classroom use and including public performance rights. Three volumes of The Science of Disney Imagineering reveal the principles at work in various Disneyland and Disney World attractions. Two all-new Timon and Pumbaa shorts find The Lion King's sidekicks learning to stay safe and be good to our planet. And a Safety Smart Science with Bill Nye the Science Guy disc delivers humor and knowledge about the dangerous but exploitable properties of fire. Each DVD includes a DVD-ROM Educator's Guide document with suggested questions, activities, and worksheets. Check out our full roundup for everything you need to know about these available DVDs and the division that creates them.

June 12, 2009 - Don't miss the latest additions to our DVDizzy.com DVD & Blu-ray Release Schedule, which include dates and details for 17 Again, I Love You, Man, Hannah Montana: The Movie,
Delgo, and The Wizard of Oz: 70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector's Edition. More...

June 11, 2009 - Kelvin Cedeno brings us an advance review of "Transformers": The Complete First Season. Shout! Factory revisits the original 1984 animated series in this 25th Anniversary 3-disc set that's in stores next week. The Autobots and Decepticons' battles on present-day Earth comprise the bulk of these sixteen episodes, which are accompanied by an origins featurette, vintage commercials and a PSA, and a printable script. Full review...

June 10, 2009 - Details have been released on September 8th's Bedknobs and Broomsticks: Enchanted Musical Edition. The slipcovered single disc will boast a digitally restored and remastered transfer of the 139-minute cut, the deleted song "A Step in the Right Direction", featurettes "The Wizards of Special Effects" (new) and "Music Magic: The Sherman Brothers" (old), and more to be announced. Preorder from Amazon.com.

Walt Disney Pictures' Morning Light is our latest DVD review subject. A pet project of Roy E. Disney, who conceived and produced it with his wife Leslie DeMeuse, this 2008 documentary follows the assembly of a team of dedicated young amateurs competing in the offshore TransPac sailing race from Los Angeles to Honolulu. Utilizing a design and stylings familiar from reality television, the film comes to disc next week after a short, limited theatrical release last fall. Its two bonus features are an ESPN special prequel and "Stories from the Sea", a documentary hosted by Jason Earles of "Hannah Montana." Give it a read here.

June 9, 2009 - Our newest DVD review looks at Revolutionary Road. Titanic stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet reunite to play a married couple living in 1950s suburban America. Directed by American Beauty's Sam Mendes and co-starring Kathy Bates and Michael Shannon, this domestic drama was largely overlooked by the Academy and the general public, but ought to be seen. Available now, DreamWorks/Paramount's disc includes an audio commentary by Mendes and screenwriter Justin Haythe, five deleted scenes, and a fine half-hour making-of featurette. Read the full review.

June 5, 2009 - As expected, yet another one of Disney's live-action/animation hybrids will get an upgrade in 2009. Bedknobs and Broomsticks: Enchanted Musical Edition will reach stores on September 8. Details to be announced, cover art is now available.

Last year's holiday TV special, Letters to Santa: A Muppets Christmas will come to Disney DVD on September 29. Featuring appearances from Whoopi Goldberg, Richard Griffiths, Nathan Lane, Jane Krakowski, Uma Thurman, and New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg, the one-hour NBC special will carry a $26.99 list price. Extras will include deleted scenes, the documentary-style featurette "Searching for Santa Claus", and a slipcover. Consumers save $6 instantly when buying in tandem with any other Disney Muppets DVD.

September will bring more unlikely re-releases as well. Disney Princess Enchanted Tales: Follow Your Dreams, the first volume of an apparently-shelved line is returning in a September 8th Special Edition ($29.99 SRP) that will pair the original DVD with a brand new bonus disc providing "never-before-seen" Mulan and Cinderella music videos and, most importantly, an exclusive sneak peek at Disney's newest princess, Tiana, in The Princess and the Frog. September 29th will give us a 10th Anniversary Edition DVD Gift Set (also $29.99) of Winnie the Pooh: Seasons of Giving. The 1999 direct-to-DVD's new disc will add two "New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh" episodes and "the perfect gift", a collectible stocking with character art from the feature.

Disney has set August 18th as the home video release date for Hannah Montana: The Movie, the company's second highest grossing film of the year so far. Following the pattern set by most recent Disney movies, the G-rated dramedy will be available in a barbones single-disc DVD ($29.99 SRP), a 2-Disc Deluxe DVD Edition with digital copy ($39.99 SRP), and a 3-Disc Blu-ray/DVD/Digital Copy Combo ($44.99 SRP). Deluxe DVD bonuses will include a director's audio commentary, cast bloopers, deleted scenes, Miley Cyrus' "The Climb" music video, the Jason Earles-hosted featurette "I Should Have Gone to Film School", and the stars' "Find Your Way Back Home" tours of their hometowns. Exclusive to Blu-ray are six additional music videos, "The Dance Experience" with the cast, and an important instructional dance-along to "The Hoedown Throwdown." Those who follow Disney's push and opt to strangely pair any Hannah movie release with the concurrent Pete's Dragon: High-Flying Edition DVD will instantly save $6 in stores and online. Cover art posted here. Scroll down for a look at Walt Disney Animation Collection: Classic Short Films, Volume 7 - Mickey's Christmas Carol.

June 4, 2009 - Kelvin Cedeno serves up a critique of Army Wives": The Complete Second Season. The Lifetime drama series about spouses of soldiers improves upon most of its Season 1 shortcomings. ABC's 5-disc set holds 19 episodes, 3 audio commentaries, deleted scenes, bloopers, and a quartet of featurettes. More...

Our newest DVD review looks at "The Jetsons": Season 2, Volume 1. Twenty-two years after leaving primetime, Hanna-Barbera Animation's futuristic twist on the family sitcom returned in syndication exactly as viewers remembered the much-rerun cartoon. Now available, Warner's 3-disc set holds 21 episodes from the 1985 season plus a brand new featurette interviewing cast, crew, and historians. Read our full review, which includes an episode clip.

June 2, 2009 - The arrival of a new Tuesday and a new month means that our DVDizzy.com Release Schedule has been overhauled to bring you a look at the entire summer. Take a look at today's new DVDs and Blu-rays and continue on through the end of 2009.

June 1, 2009 - An all-star cast is assembled for He's Just Not That Into You, an ensemble romantic comedy adapted from a self-help book inspired by a "Sex and the City" episode. Jennifer Aniston, Jennifer Connelly, Scarlett Johansson, Ginnifer Goodwin, Drew Barrymore, Justin Long, Ben Affleck, Kevin Conolly, and Bradley Cooper play Baltimore adults whose love lives and lackthereof intertwine. Available tomorrow, New Line's DVD includes widescreen and fullscreen viewing formats plus 13 minutes of deleted scenes with optional commentary by director Ken Kwapis. More...

May 31, 2009 - Kelvin Cedeno gives us a look at the Star Trek: Motion Picture Trilogy, Paramount's recent 3-disc DVD set holding 1980s films Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.

Providing the full Genesis narrative arc, these movies are considered the best of the original cast's big screen adventures. Currently selling for under $20, the collection holds all-new bonus features including audio commentaries, Starfleet Academy briefings, and 9 assorted featurettes. Read on...

May 29, 2009 - In our latest exclusive interview, we talk with Phyllis Diller. One of the first female stand-up comedians, Diller has spent over 50 years in show business, where her many appearances have ranged from game shows and variety specials to Broadway and Bob Hope movies to contemporary sitcoms. She talks about providing voices in animation, something she's been doing more now than ever before, paying special attention to her role as The Queen in A Bug's Life. Read the full interview.

The long-delayed Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: Mickey's Adventures in Wonderland finally has a release date: September 8th. The 50-minute "full-length" movie offers a cinematic widescreen/Dolby 5.1 presentation and two interactive adventure modes designed for viewers 2-3 and 4-6. It will carry a $26.99 list price. Arriving the same day is another episode compilation for Playhouse Disney's #2 series: "Little Einsteins": Fire Truck Rocket's Blastoff. It holds 95 minutes of programming and also offers two interactive "Magic Mission" playback modes for the same age groups.

May 22, 2009 - Disney has announced Pete's Dragon: High-Flying Edition for DVD release on August 18th. Announced bonus features include a deleted Terminus & Hoagy storyboard sequence (with rare demo dialogue), the featurette "Brazzle Dazzle Effects: Disney's Movie Magic" narrated by Sean Marshall (Pete), four song demos (including a deleted one performed by a cut character), promotional pop recordings of 4 songs from the film, and the song concept demo "Boo Bop Bopbop Bop (I Love You, Too)." Carrying a $29.99 list price, the FastPlay-equipped disc will come packaged in the all-important foil-embossed cardboard slipcover with chances to save with the purchase of a to-be-announced high-profile release issued alongside it. Tentative cover art has been posted here.

May 14, 2009 - Amazon.com has placed this year's Walt Disney Treasures up for pre-order: "Zorro": The Complete First Season and "Zorro": The Complete Second Season. They're currently selling at 30% off list price, but per the e-tailer's price guarantee, should they come down, you'll get them even cheaper.

Recent Disney DVD and Blu-ray Reviews:
Walt Disney Animation Collection: Classic Short Films, Volume 6: The Reluctant Dragon - The cartoon segment of Disney's first live-action feature is joined by Melody Time's Johnny Appleseed and two animal oddball tales Ferdinand the Bull and Goliath II in a disc whose only supplement is a lithograph card.
A Bug's Life (Blu-ray) - Pixar's least-recognized feature makes a noteworthy high-def debut that both gains and loses. [Related Interview: John Ratzenberger, voice of P.T. Flea]

Recent Non-Disney DVD and Blu-ray Reviews:
"Raising the Bar": The Complete First Season - This TNT legal drama co-created and produced by Steven Bochco ("L.A. Law", "NYPD Blue") stars Mark-Paul Gosselaar ("Saved By The Bell") as a principled public defender standing up for New York City's underprivileged underdogs. ABC Studios' 3-disc set holds ten hour-long episodes, 2 audio commentaries, 2 featurettes, and a short blooper reel.
Ghost (Blu-ray) -Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore, and Whoopi Goldberg star in the blockbuster 1990 romantic mystery drama fantasy about a murdered man reaching out from limbo to protect his lover. Paramount's high-definition release carries over all the extras from the blockbuster's 2007 Special Collector's Edition DVD.
"CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" The First Season (Blu-ray Disc) - Paramount's 5-disc set serves up all 23 episodes of the influential forensic drama's 2000-01 season in widescreen (as opposed to the DVD's fullscreen presentation) and adds a number of new bonus features including commentary, deleted scenes, an alternate cut of the pilot, show and episode promos, and a half-hour retrospective.
Forever Funny: T.V. Sets - Paramount's bargain disc gathers together the first episodes of "I Love Lucy", "The Honeymooners", "The Brady Bunch", "The Odd Couple", "Taxi", "Cheers", and "Frasier".
Paul Blart: Mall Cop - This nation-surprising blockbuster stars Kevin James as an overweight Segway-riding security guard who becomes the only one able to stand up to robbers taking over a mall on Black Friday. Sony's single-disc DVD serves up an audio commentary by James, deleted scenes, and 50 minutes of behind-the-scenes featurettes.
