UltimateDisney.com: The Ultimate Guide to Disney DVD
FEBRUARY 1-15, 2004: NEWS ARCHIVES

February 15, 2004 - Two new reviews today: the recently-released Follow Me, Boys! starring Fred MacMurray, and the out-of-print Special Edition Peter Pan DVD.

February 13, 2004 - Today's entry in the Top Live Action Disney Film Countdown stars a Volkswagen that everyone seems to love. It's The Love Bug at #11, which one reader points out, is appropriate to highlight the day before Valentine's Day.

We've completed that review of Treasure Island (1950).

Now available for pre-order at Amazon.com: Davy Crockett: 50th Anniversary Set, which is said to include both theatrical films - Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier and Davy Crockett and the River Pirates. Release date is September 7, and at 30% off, it is just $13.99. Also on September 7, Disney releases their own DVDs of One Little Indian (1974), starring James Garner, The Last Flight of Noah's Ark (1980) with Elliot Gould, Never Cry Wolf (1983), and the underappreciated holiday gem One Magic Christmas (1985). The same day, Squanto: A Warrior's Tale (1994) makes its DVD debut. More exciting is the DVD debut of '80s TV movie Tiger Town starring Roy Scheider!

Plus, there are the following additions to Disney's catalogue slate for July 6: the 1961 live action film Greyfriars Bobby, Never a Dull Moment (1968) starring Dick Van Dyke, Hot Lead and Cold Feet (1978), No Deposit, No Return (1976), and the 1999 made-for-TV film Balloon Farm all make their DVD debuts. Meanwhile, the same day, Disney will issue their own discs of previous Anchor Bay releases The Cat from Outer Space (1979), North Avenue Irregulars (1979), Charlie the Lonesome Cougar (1967), and Napoleon and Samantha (1972) which marks early film appearances for both Michael Douglas and Jodie Foster.

Added to August 3 is still more Disney re-releases of previous Anchor Bay DVD titles: Unidentified Flying Oddball (1979), The Watcher in the Woods (1981), and Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983). Also, the Wonderful World of Disney TV movie Oliver Twist (1997), starring Elijah Wood and Richard Dreyfuss (previously a European exclusive) bows on Region 1.

If you find all these announcements a bit hard to swallow, we refer you to the complete, updated Upcoming Release List and the DVD+ Product Search which will let you view the slate by month (March, May, June, July, August, and September.)

February 12, 2004 - The Top Live Action Disney Film Countdown coasts on with The Muppet Christmas Carol at #12.

As promised, our full DVD review of The Lion King 1 is here.

We have set up a preview page for Brother Bear, complete with a first look at the menus.

July brings The Three Lives of Thomasina, The Ugly Dachshund, and The One and Only, Genuine Original Family Band.

August's highlights include The Lion King II: Simba's Pride - 2-Disc Special Edition, Mickey, Donald and Goofy in The Three Musketeers, Darby O'Gill and the Little People, Dr. Syn, Alias the Scarecrow, The Shaggy Dog: 45th Anniversary Edition, The Shaggy D.A., "Boy Meets World": Season 1, and The Black Hole.

September marks the launch of the Disney Princess line of DVDs, with a trio of releases: Disney Princess Sing Along Songs, Disney Princess Stories, and Disney's Princess Party. Plus, The Island at the Top of the World: 30th Anniversary, Matt Dillon and the Mighty Duck Man himself, Emilio Estevez, in Tex. And here's the potential first, tiny look at Aladdin's DVD cover. Though, even if it is the cover now (and if so, it appears to be a Region 2 design), it will probably change by October, anyway:

First look at September's three Disney Princess DVDs (Sing Along, Story, and Party) in Upcoming Cover Art.

We're just churning out reviews now...Disney's little-known 1986 animated feature, The Great Mouse Detective, is the subject of the site's new DVD review.

Finally, though the release is eight months away, Disney is already trumpeting up the long-awaited 2-disc Platinum Edition DVD of Aladdin. "More than 20% of the original artwork has been enhanced" and they're adding a new song, "Proud to Be Your Boy." And Disney thinks that's...good news? Yahoo! News has the full story from Variety.

February 5, 2004 - Kelvin Cedeno revisits Alice in Wonderland in a new, detailed DVD review of the newly-released 2-disc Masterpiece Edition, comparing the new set to the Gold Collection DVD already reviewed and the film's deluxe laserdisc release.
