75th Golden Globe Awards (2017-18):
Film Nominations Preview and Predictions

Christmas is coming! But two weeks before that, movie fans get an early gift in the form of the announcement of nominees for the 75th Golden Globes. From contenders to the general public,
many view the Globes as a kind of warm-up act to the main event, the Academy Awards, which won't arrive until the first week of March next year. But I've come to appreciate the Globes in their own right, for recognizing comedies and musicals the Oscars wouldn't touch and for being a generally entertaining ceremony (even if the TV awards mean nothing to me).

By this time last year, I had already seen 150 theatrical releases. Of 2017's offerings, I'm only slightly over 100, but I've seen all but a few of the big English language contenders. My current blind spots include Phantom Thread, Molly's Game (which I have a screener to watch), The Greatest Showman (screening Sunday), Ridley Scott's rapidly reworked All the Money in the World, and Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which probably isn't a major category contender but which I'm screening a few hours after the nominees are announced.

Seth Meyers will host the Globes, which will air on NBC on January 7th. Meanwhile, the nominees will be announced on Monday at 5 AM Pacific/8 AM Eastern. If I can have a live stream posted for you here, I will. In the meantime, enjoy this educated predictions, which are arranged, as always, from most likely to least likely, along with my commentary.

Steven Spielberg's "The Post", starring Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep as the management of the Washington Post when the Pentagon Papers leaked, should draw no fewer than five nominations from the Golden Globes, including Best Picture - Drama.

Best Picture - Drama
The Post
Dunkirk
Call Me By Your Name
The Shape of Water
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Next in line: The Florida Project, Phantom Thread, Darkest Hour, Mudbound, Wonder Woman, Blade Runner 2049

When necessary, the Globes have expanded Best Picture to include six or even seven nominees. That always seems possible, but I'm pretty confident in the five I've got here. Anything from the "next in line" six breaking in would be a surprise and anything beyond them would be a huge surprise.

The critically acclaimed and well-attended "Lady Bird" seems like the frontrunner in the Golden Globes' Best Picture - Comedy or Musical category.

Best Picture - Comedy or Musical
Lady Bird
Get Out
The Big Sick
The Disaster Artist
I, Tonya

Next in line: The Greatest Showman, Baby Driver, Beauty and the Beast, Battle of the Sexes, Downsizing, Last Flag Flying, The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected), Thor: Ragnarok

Should have been contender: The Lego Batman Movie

2017 has put together a stronger Comedy or Musical class than most years. As usual, I will take this opportunity to remind you and lament that the Globes regularly used to give this award to animated films, like The Lion King and Toy Story 2, but they are inexplicably ineligible for Best Picture. Meanwhile, Avatar won. I'll be happy if The Lego Batman Movie, still one of the year's best overall, even makes the Animated Feature category. I feel like The Big Sick would be in the thick of the Oscar race if it hadn't opened so early, but then it might not have found as big of an audience as it did. Get Out's classification as comedy is a bit controversial, but it will ensure that Lady Bird has some competition for this award it still should win, but might not. Either way, both of those films are very American and this is the Hollywood Foreign Press, so maybe Big Sick could surprise at the actual ceremony.

The hilarious comedy "Get Out" seems poised to pick up a number of nominations at the Golden Globes.
